Police procedures in that state already require officers to contact the Victorian Legal Service within 60 minutes, or as soon as practicable, of an Indigenous person being taken into custody for any reason. 10.01.2022 Earlier this month, the Victorian Ombudsman released a second Report that provides recommendations for our criminal justice system. What we have learnt: - Investment in mental health and drug and alcohol rehabilitation is growing, including therapeutic forms of justice such as Drug Courts although still insufficient. Aboriginal prisoners can retain the proceeds of their artwork in prison to support their rehabilitation.... - Prison numbers continue to grow, and we are spending more than ever on prisons. Since the Ombudsman's 2015 report, the prison population has grown a further 20%. The number of women in prison is also growing rapidly. - The government has still not accepted the Ombudsman's past recommendation to stop the routine strip searching of women prisoners - the only recommendation out of 125 not accepted. - The recidivism rate remains at approx. 44% and until we start focusing more on the causes of crime many of which have their origins in early childhood, education, health, housing and employment - we will not solve this problem. https://www.ombudsman.vic.gov.au//58234f59-b79c-4a62-ab38-
