21.01.2022 What is holistic dentistry? Holistic dentistry recognises that the whole body is intimately connected and that includes the mouth. The Greek scholar Hippocrates, known as the Father of Medicine in fact wrote extensively about tooth decay and gum disease which he saw as important as lung disease, wounds and fractures. For many centuries dentistry was considered to be a part of medicine. ... The mouth was considered as significant as the brain, the heart and other vital organs and medically trained physicians specialising in the mouth would be the ones to provide dental care. This started to change around the 17th century and by the early 1900s dentistry started to branch away from medicine establishing itself as its own modality with its own teaching institutes. To date this has pretty much been the approach in modern day-to-day dentistry-well for at least the last 100 years. In more recent years, however, there has been a growing awareness and shift back to considering dentistry (and the mouth) intimately linked to medicine and the body as a whole. These days the term holistic dentistry describes this type of approach to dental care- going back to where it all began! 19.01.2022 Which toothbrush is best for me? A common question we are asked at Anokhi Dental is which toothbrush should I use?. These days we are faced with a multitude of toothbrushes (both electric and manual) and it can often be confusing as to which is the best to use. Here are some things to consider when choosing the best toothbrush for your pearly whites!:... Types of bristle on the brush: This is very important. In general, a softer bristle will be less likely to be abrasive on the teeth. This is particularly important where there are receding gums and the softer root surface of the tooth is exposed. If a hard bristle brush is used this may actually scrape away the root surface and eventually lead to teeth sensitivity and pain. Length of the bristles on the brush . The longer the bristles, the more flexible they are. This means that they are able to bend and reach into the crevices around the teeth more effectively than a short bristle brush. Electric toothbrush vs manual Is an electrical toothbrush better than a manual toothbrush? Basically the answer is no! An electric toothbrush does not necessarily guarantee a cleaner mouth. It is how often and the way you brush your teeth which is important. Unless there is some disability (such as arthritis) in holding a tooth brush in the mouth then a manual toothbrush can clean your teeth just as effectively. And really, do we need another electrical gadget to become dependent on? Plastic vs Environmentally Friendly In a world where we are inundated with plastic products is a plastic toothbrush really the most conscious choice? Most plastic toothbrushes end up in landfill these days. Choosing a bamboo toothbrush or one with a replaceable head will certainly help the health of the planet as well as the health of your mouth. www.anokhidental.com.au #toothbrush #smiles #mondayvibes #wellbeing #holisticdentist #theplanet #greendentistry #consciousness #balance #sydney #oralhygiene
18.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why we, as human beings, spend approximately one-third of our lives sleeping? From an evolutionary point of view, thousands of years ago, when we were hunters and gatherers living in hostile environments, going to sleep meant becoming vulnerable to predators and danger. If we look at the animal kingdom, all animals engage in some sort of rest and sleep. Some animals, like dolphins and whales sleep with half their brain resting at a time, with the oth...er half awake to maintain life-necessary movement. When birds need to be vigilant during sleep, one half of the brain remains alert and one eye stays open! Why dont we sleep with one eye open? For humans, sleep is so essential that we could live for a few weeks without any food, some days without water, but after only 2 or 3 nights without sleep fatigue starts to set in and our bodies start to suffer on many levels. Routinely sleeping less than 6-7 hours a day can lead to chronic sleep deprivation which then depletes the immune system and increases the chances of developing diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, depression and Alzheimers disease. Visit www.anokhidental.com.au to read Dr Patricia Vivaldis blog where she discusses why sleep is so important for good health and a strong immune system- and some super simple ways to improve the quality of your sleep! #sleephygiene #snoring #holisticdentist #immunity #teethgrinding #wellbeing #sleepapnoea #ayurveda #holistichealth #selfcare #dreaming #fridayfacts
18.01.2022 Apparently yes! Recent research presented through the European Society of Cardiology tells us that the tongue coatings of people with chronic heart failure have a different appearance to those people who are healthy. Tongue coating samples were taken from 30 healthy patients and 60 patients suffering from chronic heart failure.... What was found?.... Tongues of healthy patients were pale red with a pale white coating. Tongues of chronic heart failure patients had redder tongues with yellow coatings. When the researchers analysed the bacteria in these coatings they found very different types of species in the two cases. Eastern medicine physicians have always looked to the tongue for clues to the state of our internal health. Tongue analysis has been a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda (the ancient Indian medical system) for thousands of years. Now modern science is proving this true! www.anokhidental.com.au #microbiome #holisticdentist #tongueanalysis #ayurveda #detox #sydney #wednesdaywisdom

16.01.2022 The oral microbiome is a whole ecosystem of the bacteria and other microorganisms in the mouth. Together with saliva and plaque it forms what is known as a "biofilm". This is the sticky layer you can feel when you run your tongue over your teeth. It is made up of over 800 species of organism and is fundamental in systemic health. In health this is a symbiotic relationship i.e. all the bugs live happily together!... When the environment of the mouth shifts from slightly alkaline to acidic -the balance of the oral microbiome can shift to an unhealthy state. What does a healthy oral microbiome look like? Teeth feel clean and gums appear pink. There is a thin, protective, and odorless film covering the teeth. Mostly aerobic bacteria. What does an unhealthy oral microbiome look like? There is a thick, sticky smelly, white plaque on the teeth and tongue -especially in mornings. Bad breath, bleeding gums and tooth decay! There is a shift to more anaerobic bacteria such as those associated with tooth decay and gum disease. How to maintain a healthy oral microbiome? -Manage your stress. Stress causes a dry mouth and acidity. -Minimise sugar and refined carbohydrates in the diet. These create an acidic environment. -Good nutrition -alkalizing nutrient dense foods and good quality water. -Tongue scrape daily! www.anokhidental.com.au #tuesdaytip #oralcare #holisticdentist #microbiome #fluoridefree #mercuryfree #dysbiosis #healthygut #healthymouth

14.01.2022 Did you know that our mouths are home to more than 7 billion bacteria? Just like in the gut, some of these bacteria are good and some are bad. Together with saliva and plaque they form a sticky layer over the teeth known as the ORAL MICROBIOME. The good bacteria perform important roles in digestion, immunity and block out the overgrowth of the bad bacteria. ... The bad bacteria are responsible for tooth decay, gum disease and systemic issues like cardiovascular disease. When the environment of the mouth isnt healthy (for example a dry mouth or poor oral hygiene) the balance of this eco system can shift and the harmful bacteria can take over. In the mouth this may result in bad breath, gum inflammation, tooth decay and tooth loss. Furthermore, these oral bacteria and their toxins can then spread from the mouth throughout the body and cause disease in distant sites such as the heart, the brain and the gut (to name a few!). We are all aware of the importance of brushing and flossing to keep our mouths healthy. Many of us also use mouthwash or oil pull to maintain a fresh mouth. But what about the tongue? The white coating we often see on the tongue (particularly first thing in the morning) is a mixture of food, digestive toxins and harmful bacteria. Many of these bacteria produce sulphur which can cause bad breath. Daily tongue scraping with a silver or copper tongue scraper is simple and quick way to remove toxins from not only your mouth but also your body. You will also enjoy fresher breath! Why not add a daily dose of tongue cleaning to your daily oral hygiene routine? www.anokhidental.com.au #holisticdentistry #fluoridefree #SMART #mondaymotivation #mercuryfree #immunesystem #healthygums #wellbeing #healing #ayurveda #integrativehealth #microbiome #detox #inflammation

11.01.2022 Toothbrush hygiene! @anokhidental we advise our patients to change their toothbrush ( or toothbrush head ) every 3 months... Why?? Toothbrushes are prime real estate for bacteria, viruses and other bugs...... According to The Journal of Advanced Medical and Dental Science the average toothbrush is home to around 10 million bacteria...! After a few months of use the bristles of your brush can become frayed and less effective at cleaning...you also risk spreading more bugs around the mouth from your brush. You should replace your toothbrush SOONER if... -you have been sick -you dropped your toothbrush on the bathroom floor, or -someone else has used your brush by accident! www.anokhidental.com.au #holisticdentist #hygiene #thursdaythoughts #smiles #fluoridefree #sydneydentist #brushteeth #wellbeing

10.01.2022 We are all aware of the importance of maintaining a healthy gut flora for overall health. In recent years, evidence has shown that probiotic bacteria may be helpful in preventing or treating dental decay and gum disease. This makes sense considering the mouth is the first part of the gut! And just like the gut the mouth has its own diverse ecosystem of bacteria- some beneficial and others harmful. Collectively they make up what is known as the ORAL MICROBIOME. ... When the oral microbiome is BALANCED the mouth is in HEALTH. A recent study published in the Journal of BMC Oral Health has found that taking the probiotic Weissella cibaria may help with bleeding gums and reduces levels of harmful bacteria in the mouth that upset the balance of the oral microbiome. These harmful bacteria and their toxins can travel throughout the body are linked to diabetes, stroke, arthritis and many other diseases. Weissella cibariais found in some fermented foods-particularly kimchi. Kimchi is a traditional Korean pickle. It is made from fermenting salted vegetables such as cabbage, cucumber and radishes. These are seasoned in a classic tangy paste made of garlic, ginger, chili powder, red pepper and fish sauce. A great side dish to any meal! And full of beneficial bacteria for a healthy mouth!! 09.01.2022 With the winter chills setting in we are entering the season where we are more likely to pick up dreaded colds and viruses. Winter can be a sluggish season. To combat this, a hot lemon, and ginger drink first thing in the morning can do wonders for your immune system! This is also an excellent drink for flushing toxins from the digestive system and giving your lymphatic system a refreshing boost. If you are drinking acidic drinks such as lemon or apple cider vinegar, ...please remember to observe what we at Anokhi Dental call the the 1-hour rule. What is this? We suggest waiting at least one hour after consuming acidic drinks before brushing teeth or eating. This is because the acid in your drink can soften the surface mineral on your teeth. By brushing or eating soon after you are at risk of scraping essential minerals off the teeth. This can lead to exposed dentine, sensitivity and further dental issues. Fortunately, our own saliva contains the minerals teeth are made of i.e. calcium and phosphate and it continually washes over your teeth. By waiting one hour you give your saliva an opportunity to remineralise or in effect repair your teeth. We love natures intelligence!! At Anokhi Dental we place great emphasis on prevention when it comes to your oral health! Please share if you found this useful or visit us at www.anokhidental.com.au for more information. 05.01.2022 Our mouths are home to more than 7 billion bacteria. These form a complex eco-system known as the oral microbiome. Some of these bacteria are good and some are bad- just like in the gut. The good bacteria perform important roles in digestion, immune function and they block out the overgrowth of those bad bacteria -which are associated with gum disease, dental decay and even cardiovascular disease. When the environment of the mouth isnt healthy-eg. a dry mouth or poo...r oral hygiene, the balance of this eco-system can shift to promote the overgrowth of harmful bacteria. In the mouth, this may result in tooth decay or gum disease. When these bacteria are swallowed in the saliva they join the bacteria in the stomach which is an entirely different eco-system! It is here they can upset the balance of the gut bacteria. Considering the gut is where 70% of our immune cells are located-this is very important. And now, more than ever, we are learning how important a healthy and robust immune system is. If you are isolating at home why not tune in to your daily oral care routine-are you doing enough? 05.01.2022 Possibly!!!... As we have become all too aware this year, the wearing of face masks can be unavoidable in some situations where physical distancing is not possible. At Anokhi Dental we have been noticing something quite interesting. Many of our patients have been reporting that they are experiencing more bad breath, known as halitosis, than usual, since wearing masks.... Upon looking inside their mouths we have also noticed more: -gingivitis( gum inflammation) -teeth staining -dental decay (cavities) Essentially a covering over the nose can lead to an automatic shift to mouth breathing. This in turn dries the mouth out leading to the above issues. A recent article in the New York Post termed this as mask mouth. BTW stress can also cause a dry mouth What can you do to keep your mouth healthy? Some simple Ayurvedic tips are: Daily tongue cleaning. The white coating we often see on the tongue (particularly first thing in the morning) is a mixture of food, digestive toxins and bacteria. Many of these bacteria produce sulphur which can cause bad breath. Place a clove or cardamom pod under the tongue. Both of these revered ancient spices are fragrant and antibacterial hence freshening the breath and preventing the growth of harmful oral bacteria. Their physical presence under the tongue will also stimulate salivary flow and cleansing of the mouth which can help counteract the drying action of any mouth breathing. Swish with coconut oil before putting on your mask. Otherwise known as oil pulling this ancient Indian folk remedy has become very popular amongst those looking for natural ways to improve oral (and general) health. Coconut oil (extra virgin, organic please!) has antibacterial properties, freshens the breath and lubricates the mouth. Simple and quick!- consider a swish with 1tsp of coconut oil before putting on your mask. 01.01.2022 At Anokhi Dental we follow best practice SMART safety protocols when removing mercury amalgam fillings. SMART is the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique- a set of safety measures to reduce exposure to mercury vapour and particles during dental amalgam filling removal. These safety measures were developed by scientific research collected by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). ... Why is SMART important? Numerous modern scientific studies have shown that amalgam fillings can release significant amounts of mercury over the lifetime of the filling. Currently there is general concern, including by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as to safe levels, if any, of mercury exposure. Several European countries, including Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark, have stopped using mercury amalgam as a dental filling material in recent years in view of these concerns. At Anokhi Dental we are one of the few SMART accredited dental practices in Australia. What steps do we take? We use a latex-free rubber dam, so that amalgam pieces and vapours are less likely to be inhaled or swallowed. We use a separate air supply and special mask in order to minimise your risk of inhaling toxic mercury vapour. We use a DentAirVac vacuum system, designed specifically to remove and filter potentially toxic vapours like mercury away from the immediate breathing area of the patient, dentist and dental assistant. We use a specific single use tungsten-carbide burs in order to minimise vapour release. We use high volume suction units and water irrigation in order to keep temperature of the metal down and minimise vapour release. Our clinic air is ducted outside of the building rather than being re-circulated. So if you are looking to have your mercury amalgam fillings removed using best practice safety protocols why not call us today on (02) 92645195 or book online at www.anokhidental.com.au #wednesdaymotivation #mercurysafe #smart #iaomt #heavymetal #amalgamfilling #madhatter #holisticdentist #wellbeing #smiles
