25.01.2022 The oral microbiome is a whole ecosystem of the bacteria and other microorganisms in the mouth. Together with saliva and plaque it forms what is known as a "biofilm". This is the sticky layer you can feel when you run your tongue over your teeth. It is made up of over 800 species of organism and is fundamental in systemic health. In health this is a symbiotic relationship i.e. all the bugs live happily together!... When the environment of the mouth shifts from slightly alkaline to acidic -the balance of the oral microbiome can shift to an unhealthy state. What does a healthy oral microbiome look like? Teeth feel clean and gums appear pink. There is a thin, protective, and odorless film covering the teeth. Mostly aerobic bacteria. What does an unhealthy oral microbiome look like? There is a thick, sticky smelly, white plaque on the teeth and tongue -especially in mornings. Bad breath, bleeding gums and tooth decay! 21.01.2022 Did you know that our mouths are home to more than 7 billion bacteria? Just like in the gut, some of these bacteria are good and some are bad. Together with saliva and plaque they form a sticky layer over the teeth known as the ORAL MICROBIOME. The good bacteria perform important roles in digestion, immunity and block out the overgrowth of the bad bacteria. ... The bad bacteria are responsible for tooth decay, gum disease and systemic issues like cardiovascular disease. When the environment of the mouth isnt healthy (for example a dry mouth or poor oral hygiene) the balance of this eco system can shift and the harmful bacteria can take over. In the mouth this may result in bad breath, gum inflammation, tooth decay and tooth loss. Furthermore, these oral bacteria and their toxins can then spread from the mouth throughout the body and cause disease in distant sites such as the heart, the brain and the gut (to name a few!). 19.01.2022 Which toothbrush is best for me? A common question we are asked at Anokhi Dental is which toothbrush should I use?. These days we are faced with a multitude of toothbrushes (both electric and manual) and it can often be confusing as to which is the best to use. Here are some things to consider when choosing the best toothbrush for your pearly whites!:... Types of bristle on the brush: This is very important. In general, a softer bristle will be less likely to be abrasive on the teeth. This is particularly important where there are receding gums and the softer root surface of the tooth is exposed. If a hard bristle brush is used this may actually scrape away the root surface and eventually lead to teeth sensitivity and pain. Length of the bristles on the brush . The longer the bristles, the more flexible they are. This means that they are able to bend and reach into the crevices around the teeth more effectively than a short bristle brush. Electric toothbrush vs manual Is an electrical toothbrush better than a manual toothbrush? Basically the answer is no! An electric toothbrush does not necessarily guarantee a cleaner mouth. It is how often and the way you brush your teeth which is important. Unless there is some disability (such as arthritis) in holding a tooth brush in the mouth then a manual toothbrush can clean your teeth just as effectively. And really, do we need another electrical gadget to become dependent on? Plastic vs Environmentally Friendly In a world where we are inundated with plastic products is a plastic toothbrush really the most conscious choice? 10.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why we, as human beings, spend approximately one-third of our lives sleeping? From an evolutionary point of view, thousands of years ago, when we were hunters and gatherers living in hostile environments, going to sleep meant becoming vulnerable to predators and danger. If we look at the animal kingdom, all animals engage in some sort of rest and sleep. Some animals, like dolphins and whales sleep with half their brain resting at a time, with the oth...er half awake to maintain life-necessary movement. When birds need to be vigilant during sleep, one half of the brain remains alert and one eye stays open! Why dont we sleep with one eye open? For humans, sleep is so essential that we could live for a few weeks without any food, some days without water, but after only 2 or 3 nights without sleep fatigue starts to set in and our bodies start to suffer on many levels. 09.01.2022 With the winter chills setting in we are entering the season where we are more likely to pick up dreaded colds and viruses. Winter can be a sluggish season. To combat this, a hot lemon, and ginger drink first thing in the morning can do wonders for your immune system! This is also an excellent drink for flushing toxins from the digestive system and giving your lymphatic system a refreshing boost. If you are drinking acidic drinks such as lemon or apple cider vinegar, ...please remember to observe what we at Anokhi Dental call the the 1-hour rule. What is this? We suggest waiting at least one hour after consuming acidic drinks before brushing teeth or eating. This is because the acid in your drink can soften the surface mineral on your teeth. By brushing or eating soon after you are at risk of scraping essential minerals off the teeth. This can lead to exposed dentine, sensitivity and further dental issues. Fortunately, our own saliva contains the minerals teeth are made of i.e. calcium and phosphate and it continually washes over your teeth. By waiting one hour you give your saliva an opportunity to remineralise or in effect repair your teeth. We love natures intelligence!! Recent research presented through the European Society of Cardiology tells us that the tongue coatings of people with chronic heart failure have a different appearance to those people who are healthy. Tongue coating samples were taken from 30 healthy patients and 60 patients suffering from chronic heart failure.... What was found?.... Tongues of healthy patients were pale red with a pale white coating. Tongues of chronic heart failure patients had redder tongues with yellow coatings. When the researchers analysed the bacteria in these coatings they found very different types of species in the two cases. Eastern medicine physicians have always looked to the tongue for clues to the state of our internal health. Tongue analysis has been a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda (the ancient Indian medical system) for thousands of years. 05.01.2022 Possibly!!!... As we have become all too aware this year, the wearing of face masks can be unavoidable in some situations where physical distancing is not possible. At Anokhi Dental we have been noticing something quite interesting. Many of our patients have been reporting that they are experiencing more bad breath, known as halitosis, than usual, since wearing masks.... Upon looking inside their mouths we have also noticed more: -gingivitis( gum inflammation) -teeth staining -dental decay (cavities) Essentially a covering over the nose can lead to an automatic shift to mouth breathing. This in turn dries the mouth out leading to the above issues. A recent article in the New York Post termed this as mask mouth. BTW stress can also cause a dry mouth What can you do to keep your mouth healthy? Some simple Ayurvedic tips are: Daily tongue cleaning. Toothbrushes are prime real estate for bacteria, viruses and other bugs...... According to The Journal of Advanced Medical and Dental Science the average toothbrush is home to around 10 million bacteria...! After a few months of use the bristles of your brush can become frayed and less effective at cleaning...you also risk spreading more bugs around the mouth from your brush.
