24.01.2022 It probably won’t come as a great surprise that we have also been advised that Otway will not be running their Apollo Bay Convention. Unfortunately, given the current circumstances, we will also not be proceeding with the Bushfires Relief comp we had planned for May in Lake Tyers. At this time it seems likely we will also have to delay or cancel some Conventions at the start of next season. We will keep you posted. Of course in these times fishing isn’t really a priority. ...Stay safe and hopefully we’ll have some better news soon. Wayne Zita Secretary ANSA Victoria

23.01.2022 Recreational anglers and community members braved the wet and windy weather to participate in a riparian planting day along the Barwon River this morning. Over... 2000 native trees, shrubs and grasses were planted to help return the one kilometre stretch to its original floodplain riparian woodland habitat. Native vegetation along waterways improves fish habitat by providing shade, buffering water temperature extremes, filtering nutrients and sediments from catchment run-off, reducing erosion and providing food and woody debris for fish to shelter from predators. Geelong and District Angling Association, Australian National Sportfishing Association Victoria, Geelong Gun and Rod Association and other local groups participated in the event. Funding for this projects was provided through the Victorian Government’s Angler Riparian Partnership Program. 22.01.2022 This past weekend saw Round 5 of the ANSA Victorian Sportfishing Championship completed on the Glenelg river. Hosted by Portland SFC at the Kywong Caravan park..., it was a great weekend with good weather and several competitors that hadn't fished the river and the associated format before. A total of 107 fish met the minimum size for Bream, Estuary Perch and Mulloway and were recorded as point scoring for individuals and teams of 4 before being released (after a quick measure and Brag-mat photo to confirm Fork or Overall length depending on the species). Congratulations to Drysdale's team of Richard Malone, Russell Pickett, Greg Vagg and Stephen Hill took the win in the senior team from Williamstown and Southern Boat clubs. In the Juniors, Southern Boat took the win. Stephen Hill won the Highest Pointscoring senior Male section for the second time in 3 years, while Kathy Barrow took the Female section. The positive feedback throughout indicates that this event is going to have to be back in 2021.

21.01.2022 Details regarding Round 5 of the state championships on the Glenelg River have just been released! Hosted by Portland Sportfishing Club. Hope to see you all there!

21.01.2022 For too long recreational fishers have been prevented from enjoying fishing from public land beside rivers. We're calling on recrea...tional fishers to throw their support behind the Parks and Crown Land Legislation Amendment Bill 2019 that will allow camping on public land beside rivers The Bill is currently being considered by the Victorian parliament. By supporting this Bill, you are supporting the opportunity to create golden moments of family time, fishing and camping on public land next to our magnificent waterways. Show your support for public access to public land by visiting the following site and emailing the Victorian Crossbench MP’s: https://vrfish.good.do/publicaccesstopublicland/ #vrfish #makefishingbetter #fishingvictoria #publicaccess #publicland

12.01.2022 Have you had your say on the Draft Lake Tyers Camping and Access Strategy? Comments close September 20. Lake Tyers is one of Victoria’s fishing gems. Monster du...sky flathead, abundant black bream and and assortment of marine species such as trevally, tailor and garfish. Parks Victoria and Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) are seeking final input into the Lake Tyers State Park Camping and Access Strategy. We are encouraging all fishers who fish and access Lake Tyers to check out the plan and find out what these proposed changes mean to your favourite spots. 12.01.2022 Stage 3 Stay at Home restrictions have been reinstated across metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire. This decision has been made to help manage coronavirus ...(COVID-19) and limit its transmission across Victoria. You can still fish and boat but with the following restrictions: If you live in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, you can go fishing and boating within metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire with one other person or with household members. You cannot travel outside of metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire to go boating and fishing. If you live outside of metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, existing restrictions still apply but you cannot travel into metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire to go boating and fishing. NSW has updated its Murray River maritime rules. The NSW border starts from the high water mark on the Victorian side of the Murray River. People currently in Victoria who intend to enter NSW waters using a vessel on the Murray River must have a permit. This applies to: each person on board a vessel entering NSW waters from Victoria; and all recreational and commercial vessels, including houseboats. NSW Police are enforcing border entry requirements. You can apply for a border entry permit via Service NSW here: service.nsw.gov.au/t/apply-covid-19-nsw-border-entry-permit Further information about NSW border restrictions can be found here: nsw.gov.au//what-you-can-and-cant-do-u/border-restrictions Victorians are being asked to be considered and use common sense when it comes to their activities. And importantly, no matter where you live, if you feel sick you must stay home and get tested. 08.01.2022 * * Thanks to everyone engaging on this post over the weekend. Today we have received an apology from both Maritime Safety Victoria and Parks Victoria... for not consulting with recreational fishers on this proposal. As a result public consultation we understand will be extended to November 29th. We can confirm that the intent of the proposal was to regulate for some 'unwritten rules' between rowers and commercial operators - not recreational fishers. VRFish has a meeting with Maritime Safety Victoria next Tuesday to work through our significant concerns with this proposal to ensure there is no impact to us fishers, our access is in fact further secured and we can continue to be a responsible user group on the Yarra River in pursuit of some great fishing opportunities. ORIGINAL POST: Wanted to let you VRFish has some grave concerns for a proposal that will kill off boat-based bream fishing in the Yarra River. The proposal is intending to introduce "Restricted Zones" prohibiting any stopping, drifting, turning, reversing direction or crossing the river under or near all the bridges that span the Yarra from the waters of the Port up to Dight Falls. Its proposed that this restricted zones spanning the width of the river and 75 metres either side (shown in orange on the maps). Anyone who has fished the river in a small boat or kayak will know the structure around the bridges are some of the most productive waters for our estuarine species, particularly bream. Recreational fishers have not been consulted. VRFish has reached out to Maritime Safety Victoria and Parks Victoria to resolve the situation. Changes, if any, are not intended to to be brought in until after the 2019/20 boating season which means we have time to advocate for commonsense and protect fishing on the Yarra. 03.01.2022 Today, VRFish congratulated the Portland Sports Fishing Club who received a grant of $5,000 from the Victorian Fisheries Authority to promote the the fisher-led... Tuna Champions program in the local area. Funds will be used to support a local tuna competition that only allows properly dispatched, gilled and gutted and iced fish to be weighed in. They will also be supported with a permit to tag SBT, with data to help research into the movements and growth rates of the fish. This is a great example of grassroots fishers and fishing clubs showing leadership in their local community to promote responsible fishing practices for our beloved Southern Bluefin Tuna fishery. Jaala Pulford MP also announced that Portland Boat Ramp is now free from parking and launching fees! Small moves make a big difference. Be a Tuna Champion today ! 03.01.2022 The Premier release of this fascinating documentary on Southern Bluefin Tuna produced by Al McGlashan will be held on 6 November at the IMAX Melbourne starting at 7pm. Admission is free but to attend you must register for the event via the link. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/life-on-the-line-world-prem We hope all members will join us and support the event and our goals in education and conservation of this iconic species.

02.01.2022 Unfortunately the club will not be able to weigh fish on the club gantry until further notice. The Glenelg Shire Council have issued us with several requirement...s that need to be met if it is to remain in position following complaints from an individual. We are working through an annual permit fee ($113) and engineering sign-off for a 300kg WLL (current quote is $1140+) in an effort to retain the gantry. Every endeavour is being made to meet the requirements without impacting members. All options are worth considering, so if you have idea on meeting the requirements via cheaper providers (e.g. Jim's certifications) or ways of offsetting the cost please get in touch with us. We really want to keep the gantry and it's benefits to all anglers. Stay tuned.

02.01.2022 Hi Guys Just a quick note to let you all know that with the current COVID-19 restrictions Melton SFC have advised they are unable to proceed with the Purrumbete Convention on 15/16 August. If you have a booking at the Lake Purrumbete Holiday Park they have advised they’re happy to hold over your booking until next year. Please contact the Park to discuss your booking.... At this stage it remains unclear whether we will be able to re-schedule the Convention to a later date this fishing year. Take care and hopefully we’ll be able to get together at Eildon in October.

01.01.2022 We are asking Victorians to stop all forms of recreational boating to help stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). From 11.59pm tonight, Victoria is introduc...ing Stage 3 restrictions. There will only be four reasons to leave your house: For essential food and supplies. For exercise. For medical care. And for work and education if necessary. To be clear, the Premier has described exercise as ‘a walk round the block or a bike ride to stretch your legs and get some fresh air’. This does not include recreational boating. Please note that Marine Search and Rescue services do not have the same capability to perform rescues on the water as they normally would. Anyone choosing to head out on the water is putting themselves and others at increased risk. Our advice is to stay home, take the time to inspect your lifejackets and keep on top of boat maintenance, and prepare for when we have the all clear to head back out. If you can stay home, you must stay home. Take care everyone.
