25.01.2022 Meet the team of young expeditioners sailing to Antarctica in January. I’m James Gow, For as long as I can remember I have had the urge to push the limits and explore new challenges. Growing up it was clear to me that I would never be satisfied with a run of the mill job, I was always actively chasing my passions whether that be building mountain bike tracks at home or making the most of sporting opportunities by travelling internationally representing Australia. With Brisb...ane as my playground providing me with leading sports clubs, National Parks to hike in and Moreton Bay to sail on, with all this at my fingertips I couldn’t have asked for more. I am currently 21 and having worked in the Outdoor Education Industry with Outward Bound for the last couple of years, Outward Bound has cemented in me just how important the sense of challenge and diversity is in my life. In my eyes Antarctica is the unforgiving climate, the sheer scarceness of such a large land mass and compared to any other continent on earth , the unbeknownst of it all that really excites me. This opportunity is like no other and it has opened my eyes to a whole new side of expedition planning and expanding my own horizons. I can not wait for this unforgettable journey. #antarctica #outwardbound #outwardboundaustralia #sailing See more

24.01.2022 Meet the team of young expeditioners sailing to Antarctica in January. Hi I'm Finlay Cooper, From a young age I have always loved being outdoors, interacting with nature and being at the mercy of it's power. When I was 7 I learnt to sail and from then on it has taken me to places like New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuatu and Port Davey in the Southwest of Tasmania. When I am not sailing I work at Peter Johnston Ship Chandlers in the retail outlet and doing yacht maintenance. I also e...njoy time on Mt Wellington mountain bike riding with mates. Antarctica has always been a place that I have been in awe of, because it's so unique compared to anywhere else in the world. I have dreamt about this trip since childhood after watching the documentary "Snow Petrol" about a few Tasmanian men that sailed from Kettering, Tasmania to Antarctica on a small red yacht. After watching that I thought there was no cooler way to get down to the ice and explore it in all it's beauty. When this trip came up I could hardly believe it was real. I'm very stoked to say that I'm going to be a part of it. The photos are of me on some recent adventures of mine. The first is from New Caledonia at a small island near the Ile De Pins. The second is from a back-country skiing and snowboarding trip that I did into the Walls of Jerusalem, Tasmania.

20.01.2022 Some mountaineering skills practice in New Zealand for two of our expeditioners @aspiring_guides

17.01.2022 Meet the team of young expeditioners sailing to Antartica in 2021... Hey there! My name is Gabby. I’m 18 years old and am currently studying teaching at university. From a very young age I developed a ‘love’ for the outdoors and always found myself looking for an adventure. I grew up in the warm tropics of North Queensland, which no doubt encouraged my passion for the outdoors. My family and I are known to be avid ‘sea-goers’ spending many weekends fishing, diving, spearfishi...ng, surfing and camping in our local backyard- The Great Barrier Reef. Throughout my schooling years I participated in many sports including netball, dancing and Surf Life Saving (which I am still an active patrol volunteer to this day). My strong love for the ocean led me to participate in the Young Endeavour Young Scheme, which involved embarking on a 2 week sailing adventure onboard the Young Endeavour tall ship. Although being the youngest onboard (16), I was awarded the Captain’s Certificate of Excellence. I cannot contain how excited I am to be joining this amazing crew and fulfilling one of my biggest dreams. Antarctica here we come!

16.01.2022 Just like most of you, we have had to navigate around some logistical icebergs in recent months. The team have been working overtime to ensure smooth sailing for our expedition preparation. However, with great uncertainty about what looms in front of us in regards to international travel and global affairs in the near future, we have decided that The Antarctic Apprenticeship expedition will be going ahead in the early months of 2022. Although the winds have been against us so far this year, we have adjusted our sails and have an exciting announcement coming in the next few weeks. So climb to the crow's nest and maintain a lookout because you don't want to miss this.

13.01.2022 The waters of South East Queensland are a bit warmer than Antarctica, but are a great early training ground for multi-day sailing expeditions.

12.01.2022 Meet the team of young expeditioners sailing to Antarctica in 2021 G’day, My name is Patrick, I am 19 years old and the expedition leader. Since primary school, I have been totally enthralled by Antarctica. I was first inspired by this continent from stories of past explorers, including my heroes Hubert Wilkins and Douglas Mawson. In year 9, I was invited to join and involved in preparations for a scientific and radio expedition to the sub-Antarctic, Heard Island. After this ...I was involved with the Australian Antarctic Division, including participating in expeditioner pre-departure training. I also have passions in the areas of outdoor exploration and social justice. I have worked and volunteered as an outdoor guide, predominantly with youth at risk over the past year. I was appointed as a member of the Tasmanian Children and Young People’s Advisory Council, where I advocated for climate justice and greater youth engagement with the outdoors. I have been privileged to have some incredible adventures in recent years including rock climbing expeditions in Tasmania, mountaineering and white water paddling in New Zealand, teaching sailing in South East Queensland and guiding bushwalking expeditions in Queensland’s national parks. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Maritime Management and Global Logistics at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania, with the aim of gaining more skills to lead more large-scale expeditions in the future. This expedition aims to instil in young people an interest in Antarctica, in order to preserve and manage this unique ecosystem into the future and encourage other young people to step out of their comfort zones, get outdoors and explore the world. It is bound to be an unforgettable experience for myself and the other team members that hopefully leads to a continued love affair with Antarctica.

10.01.2022 The beginning of 2020 marks 12 month until the departure date for 8 young expeditioners!

07.01.2022 Meet the team traveling to Antarctica in 2021. Hi my name is Hannah and I’m absolutely stoked to be a part of this great team. I have always loved the outdoors and when I’m not spending my time studying at uni, I like to hang out with my friends on all kinds of adventures, from hiking expeditions and kayaking to playing soccer. I really enjoy the challenges and growth that comes from stepping outside of what’s comfortable and exploring. A lot of my favourite memories in the o...utdoors are from my family’s camping trips to Lady Musgrave Island. It’s a tiny island on the Great Barrier reef and the perfect spot for snorkelling, diving and spear fishing. We’ve been camping there since I was very young, so I have a lot of fond memories - watching baby turtles hatch, snorkelling with manta rays and just spending time with family and friends. Antarctica is a drastically different environment when compared to the warm lagoon at Musgrave, but of course when an opportunity came up to join this expedition, I absolutely couldn’t say no! I’m excited to be part of a team of like-minded young people, all with a real passion for adventure. Antarctica is an awesome landscape with some spectacular wildlife, I can’t wait to explore it as we take on a new set of challenges and develop new skills. See more

05.01.2022 Meet the team of young expeditioners sailing to Antarctica in January. My name is Jazz Heckeroth and I am an 18-year-old Physiotherapy student and passionate explorer from Queensland, Australia. Throughout my childhood, I have been blessed to grow up in an extremely outdoorsy household, and these early memories of type 2 fun have fostered a deep appreciation for nature and how we can participate in its beauty through activity. In my brief stint on planet earth so far, I have... enjoyed almost every adventure sport under the sun. Including surfing, climbing, mountaineering, gymnastics on horseback (‘Equestrian Vaulting’ for you intellectual folks out there) and everything in between. For me, travelling to Antarctica is a challenging opportunity to gain valuable practical skills, and be immersed in one of the world’s most remote and untouched natural landscapes. I could not be more excited to be a part of such an exciting expedition and have the chance to work with such a passionate and driven crew. As for some of these snaps; the first is taken in 2017 on Cerro Electrico (a peak in Argentine Patagonia), and the second is from a recent family trip to Tasmania. See more
