25.01.2022 FRIDAY FUNNY A Danish study found that king penguin poo stimulated the production of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, otherwise known as happy or laughing gas!
25.01.2022 #Climatechange is a threat to humanity, and also to some of the world's best loved wildlife. Emperor #penguins depend on Antarctica’s frozen sea ice shelves for safety and breeding. But as temperatures rise, the shelves are vanishing. #longread
24.01.2022 Australia's new #icebreaker takes another step towards completion. RSV Nuyina's #science and support capabilities are next level... we can't wait to welcome the ship to Australia!
24.01.2022 "Release of methane from frozen underwater stores or permafrost regions is one of the key tipping points that scientists are concerned about, which occur when a particular impact of global heating becomes unstoppable." There's so much we still need to discover and understand in the complex #Antarctic and northern polar regions. Science like this helps to improve models and predictions of future #climate to protect and prepare communities around the world.
21.01.2022 "It’s an exciting time to be involved with #Antarctic research, but it’s far more than that, it is a critical time. The planet is changing so fast... If we’re going to uncover the solutions, we need to know what is happening now, so that we can predict the future, and act." Rob King explains why we need to value and support Antarctic science this National Science Week and every day. The Antarctic Science Foundation funds Antarctic science to understand and protect the planet. Visit our website to find out more. #natsciwk

19.01.2022 It's National Science Week! We are celebrating the theme "Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans" with Dr Elanor Bell describing why #whales are so important in the Southern Ocean ecosystem and for the health of the planet. Your support for the Antarctic Science Foundation can take us to the depths of the ocean to find the balance for a sustainable future. Tune in to hear more about #Antarctic science and innovation from us as #natsciwk rolls on!
18.01.2022 While we understand #Antarctica and the #SouthernOcean much better than we did, and we know a lot more about the #climate system, there are still really important gaps in our understanding... Knowledge is power. Knowledge will tell us what we absolutely need to avoid. Knowledge will guide our adaptation. And knowledge will help reduce suffering."... This #BreakingTheIce ‘TED talk’ by antarctica.gov.au glaciologist Dr Tas van Ommen goes to the heart of the Antarctic Science Foundation’s work: to understand and protect the planet through Antarctic science.
18.01.2022 The Antarctic Science Foundation advances the understanding and protection of our planet through investing in Antarctic science.
17.01.2022 Enjoy this extraordinary collection of recent images from #Antarctica: oceans, wildlife, weather and science. It's a majestic and inspiring place, but it's also so much more: one of the last wild places on earth and a natural laboratory devoted to peace and science
17.01.2022 Happy #PolarPride Day and #LGBTQSTEMDay2020! We are committed to supporting diversity, equity and inclusion in #science in Antarctica, and acknowledge our awesome LGBTQIA+ colleagues. Image: Pride in Polar Research thanks for all you do to create a friendly community which works to improve LGBTQIA+ visibility and to support LGBTQIA+ researchers.
17.01.2022 #Antarctica remains COVID-19 free. Australia has had to adapt their Antarctic science and operations program for the coming summer season due to pandemic pressures, and to ensure that personnel stay safe. AAD Director Kim Ellis said the pandemic meant that #science will be done at a distance this year, via ongoing monitoring. "We're monitoring biology, so birdlife and sealife, we're monitoring ice and temperature and climate, but we won't have any major research projects underway."
15.01.2022 Antarctic fur seals' whiskers hold clues about what they have been eating over a number of years! In the past it has been difficult to get a clear idea of the seals' diet as they spend 80% of their lives at sea. New research combines analysis of the whiskers with information about where the seals have been in the ocean, gleaned from miniature tracking devices attached to the seals' flippers. The work will inform fishing practices in the Southern Ocean and contributes to an understanding of how Southern Ocean food webs respond to climate change.
14.01.2022 Accurate predictions of global climate inform the choices that we need to make for a #sustainable future. #Climate science in Antarctica builds vital knowledge to protect communities around the world from disasters like bushfires and cyclones, which are happening at an unprecedented scale. Join us to fund climate science with impact: https://antarcticsciencefoundation.org/giving
14.01.2022 Scientists have found evidence that frozen greenhouse gases in the #Arctic Ocean have started to be released over a large area of the continental slope off the East Siberian coast. The polar regions are sentinels for the planet and indicators of #climate changes that have the potential affect us all. Science in these regions such as that funded by the #Antarctic Science Foundation helps us to understand and protect the planet.
13.01.2022 Penguins are in trouble, researchers have warned in the journal Conservation Biology. Populations of more than half of the world’s 18 #penguin species are declining including several of the nine species that live in #Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic, due to threats like habitat loss and #climate change. This National Threatened Species Day we recognise the committed scientists who work to understand and protect these iconic species , and all the other parts of the Antarctic environment that must be in balance for a healthy ecosystem. 12.01.2022 Seals in Electric Hats! PhD Candidate Natalia Ribeiro from Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies - IMAS is using special marine explorers - elephant seals - to study the melting of ice shelves in East Antarctica and how this affects ocean circulation. "To measure the temperature and salinity of the water in the region... we attach a device to their heads that contains salinity, temperature and pressure sensors and they transmit all the data they collect to us via sat...ellite. After a year or so, the device falls off, and their contribution to our research is done." Natalia was one of the recipients of the Antarctic Science Foundation's COVID-19 Student Support grants earlier this month, and has also been involved in the fantastic Young Tassie Scientists program. Meet Natalia in the video below, and learn more about her work in the article published in the prestigious Nature Reviews and Earth Environment. Congratulations Natalia and best wishes for the continuation of your project!

03.01.2022 Antarctic science has a direct link to the sustainability and success of our everyday lives in Australia. By supporting the #Antarctic Science Foundation you can help us to inform the choices we need to make for a sustainable future. Paleoclimatologist Dr Tessa Vance tells us The eastern half of Australia has a hugely variable #climate in terms of rainfall . If we don’t understand how variable that climate is, and how it changes over time, then we can’t plan our industry, we can’t plan our agriculture, we can‘t even plan our urban water resources. We need to know this information so that we can plan how our communities will live into the future and where their #water will come from. #natsciwk #ScienceWeek
03.01.2022 The Antarctic Science Foundation is supporting a new generation of #Antarctic researchers through this difficult time, with a limited number of grants of up to $5000 for PhD students. 02.01.2022 The million year ice core will give us the longest possible view of the earth's climate systems past, present and future. #Innovation and technology is the key to the world-leading #Antarctic science of the future!
02.01.2022 Cause for concern.... Analysis of deep ocean sediments south of the Australian continent suggests there could be more than 30 times as much plastic at the bottom of the world’s oceans than there is floating at the surface. The impact of plastics on #vulnerablewildlife is largely unknown. We know that they can entangle wildlife, and #microplastics and even smaller pieces are consumed by an array of species from plankton to whales. This new study is an important contribution to global efforts to understand plastics in the environment. This deep-sea data from Australia can be combined with other efforts worldwide to get a more complete picture. #healthyoceans
