24.01.2022 Robbie will be having a chat with Owen McKern on Impressions on PBS 106.7FM at 7:00pm tonight about Antelodic's latest release "To Iceland! To Iceland!", and the postponed national tour. Tune in and hear the stories behind the music.

20.01.2022 Thanks ABC Jazz!

20.01.2022 The third song on 'To Iceland! To Iceland!' is Djamba Germaine. This is a song I wrote about 20 years ago. It just keeps coming back for more. The version on the Antelodic album is about the 10th arrangement I've done of it. What can I tell you. I like the melody. Gideon Brazil played baritone saxophone on this song. That made me happy. Baritone saxophone suits him. It was fun to record a song with a few overdubs on it to augment the "normal" sound of the trio. Happy listening. By the way, if you want to prepare for the story behind next week's song, grab yourself a copy of Richard Brautigan's 'Sombrero Fallout'. (There might be a test, and you wouldn't want to fail).

19.01.2022 A lovely post from Billy Pinnell about our album. It's an interesting circle when the man who introduced me to a whole bunch of great Australian music over the airwaves when I was a kid is now talking about my own project. Thanks Billy.

15.01.2022 Very happy that Antelodic's 'To Iceland! To Iceland!' album is being considered for Best Jazz Album in the longlist stage for the Music Victoria Awards. The news came just as I was thinking it was time to start telling the story behind each song on the album. So for the next several weeks you'll get to find out what inspired this music, which is so beautifully performed by my good friends Gideon Brazil and Monty Mackenzie. Starting with the title track - 'To Iceland!' is an a...nagram of "Antelodic" (as are several other song titles on the album). The idea of sailing to Iceland across endless seas served as a metaphorical journey for the trio impossibly arduous, boundless and unending. We have spent so much time in Antelodic striving for better performances, better arrangements, a deeper connection with each other and with audiences. There is always more to learn and achieve creatively, which makes doing it simultaneously difficult and joyful. That's what this song is all about See more

15.01.2022 The album "To Iceland! To Iceland!" is dedicated to the memory of my good friend Mick Dragwidge, who passed away unexpectedly at the end of 2017. This song was the first piece that arrived in reaction to the loss of Mick. Gideon and Monty, who I don't think ever met him, play this song so beautifully that it feels to me as though they knew him well. When we recorded this piece a year later, I felt like we'd created something really graceful, lyrical and gentle. Music that did... something to honour the memory of Mick. But I'm also saddened that the piece was written in the first place. As a side note, one thing that helped me in the initial stages of grieving was listening ocontinuously to Zoe Frater's composition "Yellow Is For Sunshine" which can be found here: https://soundcloud.com/zoefrater/yellow-is-for-sunshine. Happy listening.

14.01.2022 If you like Antelodic, there's a good chance you'll enjoy the music of Nat Bartsch, and Antelodic guitarist Robbie Melville. Tune in this Sunday.

11.01.2022 Track 4 on the "To Iceland! To Iceland!" album is inspired by Richard Brautigan's 1975 novel "Sombrero Fallout". It's a fine, hilarious and moving read. You should get yourself a copy. The song is mostly written in two part counterpoint for guitar, which is then doubled on the saxophones. Gideon Brazil takes a great solo on this tune! I'd tell you all about the story of the novel, but I think it's better if I let Richard Brautigan do the talking. Here's the opening paragraph ...of the book: A sombrero fell out of the sky and landed on the main street of town in front of the mayor, his cousin, and a person out of work. The day was scrubbed clean by the desert air. The sky was blue. It was the blue of human eyes, waiting for something to happen. There was no reason for a sombrero to fall out of the sky. No airplane or helicopter was passing overhead and it was not a religious holiday. Happy listening.

10.01.2022 Here's "Tango In Pusan", track 7 on our album. This song is has been around for some time now. I wrote it one hot summer's afternoon on a balcony in Pusan, South Korea, drunk on gin in 2006 (I don't mean I was drunk on gin for the entirety of 2006. Perhaps I should re-word that sentence. Also, I thought that I had written it in about 1998, but the date on the chart says 2006. So, maybe it was 1998 when I wrote it, but I was drunk enough to think I was living in the future, or maybe even drunk enough to actually be living in the future. Who could say). Anyway, it featured on cleverhorse's first album "Goodnight, Mr. Monster" and is still a song I enjoy playing. We did a last minute arrangement of it for the Antelodic album. It's a nice lift after the solemn Icelandic hymn Heyr Himna Smiður. Happy listening.

10.01.2022 Superstition dictates that Friday the 13th is an unlucky day. Today is the official release of our second album "To Iceland! To Iceland!", and we're faced with the possibility of having to postpone our national tour. So the best way to hear our music and get a feel for what we're doing is to purchase a CD. The CD comes with some incredibly evocative early 20th century photography by Reykjavík photographer par excellence Magnus Ólafsson, and is a great companion to the music.... CDs can be purchased at our band camp website: https://antelodic.bandcamp.com By purchasing our album , you'll not only be gaining access to some beautiful art, you'll be making Friday the 13th lucky again.

06.01.2022 Happy to be performing tomorrow morning at 10:30 with Nat Bartsch for These Digital Times, presented by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. It's free. It's also an incredible line up. Just head to melbournejazz.com, pour yourself a coffee and settle in.

05.01.2022 I'll be chatting about Antelodic's 'To Iceland! To Iceland!" album with David Moyle on JoyFM 94.9 this Sunday night at 7pm on the 'Bent Notes' show if you'd like to tune in and hear all about it. In the meantime, here's "For Schnozzle".

04.01.2022 Happy release day to Nat Bartsch for her new ABC album 'Forever More'. It was a real pleasure to be a part of this project, and we just managed to record it before the first lockdown. Congratulations Bartsch!

03.01.2022 Here's track 6 on the album. This is our arrangement of Iceland's favourite hymn. The poem, by warrior chieftain Kolbeinn Tumason, was written around the turn of the 13th century while he was on his death bed. In the 1970s, one of Iceland's most important composers, Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, adapted the hymn. I heard a vocal arrangement of his adaption in the music shop I used to work in, a few weeks before we entered the recording studio. I decided on the spot that it had to be part of the album. Gideon Brazil and Monty Mackenzie did a perfect job of playing space. And I had the chance to play baritone guitar. It was a nice surprise all in all.
