23.01.2022 Cold air, high mountains, the sound of a babbling brook and a few days on the trails. A couple of days int the field always makes those long days in the office worth it. Our brief review of the Thredbo Valley Track identified a that this amazing track could be made better with some simple tweaks to alignment, some improvements to pedestrian amenity, some subtle but important changes to signage and some key maintenance fixes in several locations.

22.01.2022 Anthony was interviewed this morning about the potential route for Stage 2 of Canberra Light Rail. By using the intertown Public Transport route, following Commonwealth Avenue on to State Circle the light rail will be within an easy 8 minute walk (or three minute bike ride) of over 80% of the Parliamentary Triangle's monuments and Barton's workforce. This route serves both the needs of the workers traveling to Woden, from Woden and all those in between.... Sometimes you don't need a convoluted solution, sometimes the simplest solutions are the best ones. Dr Burton starts at around 10 minutes into the program: https://www.abc.net.au/.../pro.../mornings/mornings/10860130

18.01.2022 This trail is even better today! While AB&A is in a long, long term hiatus it’s great to see the legacy of our work continues to be enjoyed

17.01.2022 As a consulting company it is always nice to go back and revisit some of your past work if for no other reasons then to learn, improve and see how your vision has been implemented. In 2010 we began the consultation phase for Bruce Ridge and in 2011 completed the recreational Master Plan. I recently revisited Bruce Ridge and I have to say that the Friends of Bruce Ridge are doing an excellent job. A rationalised and rehabilitated trail network (including new trails) and new signs all within a natural bush setting (in the middle of the city of Canberra) make for a unique Australian mountain biking and trail running experience. If you've got the time you really should check it out.

13.01.2022 WE WON! So very proud of being part of the team who won the ACT Planning Institute of Australia award for planning excellence. The award, Improving Planning Processes and Practices with the Active Living Program, is the result of a partnership with Karen Wright (Karen Wright Projects), Annie Kentwell (HeartFoundation Australia) and Anne Moroney and Nyah Donaldson of the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate. This work will see a healthier Canberra ...and is a lesson for every other jurisdiction in planning our cities for the health and well-being of the community. It’s taken 10 years of background and development to become an overnight success! Thanks to Tony Stubbs of the Heart Foundation and Greg M Ews of Urban Synergies Group for your early work in setting up the program and setting the platform for this work. #PIAACTAwards18

12.01.2022 A little under three years ago I was asked to write the #MasterPlan for #MajuraPines. It was a great fun project that has worked for the community and has encouraged 1000's of Canberrans to get out there and ride (and run, and walk). It's now been a little over 10 months since this project was officially opened and the trails are beding in nicely, the volunteer team at the Majura Pines Trail Alliance have really stepped up and kept the trails in great nick and build some... great new sections. This is a great recreational resource for all Canberrans and visitors and shows part of what Anthony Burton & Associates is about. Helping the community identify and realise recreational assets. The video was shot by Flow Mountain Bike Magazine. Enjoy

11.01.2022 A fantastic day presenting at the Australian Walking and Cycling conference in beautiful Bendigo. Our paper, Mountain Biking: who’s your target market (it’s probably different to who you think it is) was exceptionally well received. Not to give away all the secrets but the bottom line is if you are looking to grow the sport and build a tourism product the numbers clearly point towards inclusive trail design!

11.01.2022 Dr Anthony Burton talking about planning and transport with ABC Canberra's Adam Shirley on 30 July. Anthony was asked to discuss the results of the recently released Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey and in particular about commuting in Canberra https://www.abc.net.au//programs/mornings/mornings/11340358

10.01.2022 Back a little while ago AB&A did much of the design and ground truthing for the Canberra #CentenaryTrail. Last year I had the great pleasure of filming some of my favourite segments with the folks from Territory and Municipal Services. This video will take you on a quick journey through just some of the highlights of this 145km trail we designed. Come and visit sometime and I'll give you a guided tour. Enjoy https://vimeo.com/137927730

10.01.2022 So good to explore Bruce Ridge and finally see the maps and trails heads identified in the original planning in place. Graded trails and sign posting makes it a safer and more sustainable place to walk, run and ride. Well done @FriendsofBruceRidge ACT Government

10.01.2022 These new trails that we spent a good part of last summer designing are now open for all visitors to use and enjoy. It was great to add our signature to a truly internationally renowned venue

09.01.2022 Work is all set to start on implementing our latest trails #MasterPlan on #IsaacsRidge in the south of #Canberra. The initial work will focus on two #downhill #mountainbike corridors but there will be plenty there for all users of the forest. A new active user trail called The Spine will get walkers, runners and bike riders above a spectacular waterfall with gorgeous views to the west. There is also a new #equestrian link for the horse riders out there. ... Our #Trails master plan identifies a whole lot more potential for the site while maintaining the low profile feel that the community were keen on. Oh, and for the downhillers out there, there will still be plenty of those opportunities that Isaacs has always been famous for (just not over the roads...) The guys from Jindabyne Landscaping will have the job of building the trails on behalf of the ACT Government http://www.canberratimes.com.au//mountain-biking-trails-on

09.01.2022 We're always happy to lead a Jane Jacobs Walk and this one was no different. Great walk, excellent insights and greater understanding of the potential for higher density spaces within a Canberra context (thanks Liz de Chastel for the photo). The opportunities to lead an exploration of a part of a city is fun and very rewarding as experiential learning is such a powerful way to increase our knowledge and understanding of a location, its context and the way, as city planners we can help to shape a happier, healthier and more prosperous city. http://www.janejacobswalk.org//canberra-act-australia-jane

08.01.2022 These amazing new trails at our local school will not only encourage more kids to ride to school but also parents to get on their bikes to ride with their kids (and then on to work!). They'll be great for walking, running and riding and provide another outlet for physical and imaginative play. The good news is that the school is keen for these trails to be open to the public outside of school hours, thus becoming a resource not only for the school but the entire community. A fantastic collaboration between Makin Trax Australia and AB&A with funding from the P&C and the school (all of AB&A's has been pro bono).

05.01.2022 We were lucky enough to work with the Australian National Botanic Gardens to design their new walking trail. Negotiating challenging terrain this trial rewards walkers with close encounters with orchids, eucalypts, wallabies and some of the most spectacular views within central Canberra. Taking users on the southern side of Black Mountain Drive this trail will lead you through a series of rain forest gullies finishing up at a spectacular lookout in a beautiful mountain side... glen. Another successful AB&A trail in the Canberra Region https://www.facebook.com/AustralianNationalBotanicGardens/posts/10155657802254408

04.01.2022 A fantastic turnout to plant out the North Ainslie Primary School Adventure Trail. So many helping hands put in and water over 900 plants. This new facility will be an asset not only to the school but the entire community.

04.01.2022 After working as a professional planner for over 10 years and volunteering in the planning, designing and building of tracks and trails for over 15 years Anthony Burton & Associates was formed in 2010. This new professional venture incorporated our passion for designing amazing recreational spaces and trails for people to enjoy. Our first job in the private sector was working with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service in by consulting on the Discussion paper: national pa...rks and wildlife service cycling policy review and developing their Sustainable Mountain Bike Strategy http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//110649SustMountainBikin We have since planned, designed and consulted on some of the best recreational venues in Australia include Stromlo Forest Park, the National Arboretum Canberra and Majura Pines.

03.01.2022 The trails I designed at the National Arboretum Canberra are being expertly constructed by Makin Trax Australia (photos courtesy of Makin Trax). The first stage around Dairy Farmers Hill (pictured) will be open in early November. It's a fantastic facility and it will be great to see more people walking and cycling on these multi-use trails

02.01.2022 I'm in the final stages of ground truthing some fantastic trails at Isaacs Ridge, Canberra. If you like riding bikes down hill, over boulders and through trees then perhaps this will be the place for you! As always the photos never do the slope justice! Oh and if you prefer something a little more sedate (or something in between) to walk, run and ride on then hopefully you wont be disappointed either!

01.01.2022 Could this be a new walking and riding destination in Canberra? A tough day in the office combined with all our planning work means that the signs are pointing that way.
