21.01.2022 Had a night mare re-polish of a Ceylon sapphire last week. No matching or meeting facets totally at random starting at 82 degrees at the girdle to an extra deep culet at 35 degrees. It was going to be a full days work and I had a desk full of other work all due. I need a real fast re-polish lap. So I resurrected this old lap. I had'nt played with it for at least a year and only recently used the back of it for polishing a diamond during my Gemmology lecture. Yes it's cast iro...n. I had modified it with a Special Alloy centre, but could'nt get around the heat buildup. It also did'nt give a good pre-polish. So I tried my new superslick polish compound in 8000 as a pre-polish. Well, that did it super fast and super flat and good finish. The 100,000 centre finished it off brilliantly. The trick was to eliminate all the friction and the superslick did just that even at 2500 RPM under pressure. So Guess what my next lap to go into production will be. Already ordered the metal. First one ready by the weekend. An expanded disc for those who have machines capable of taking a 9 inch disc can have a 3000 pre-polish,14,000 first finish and 100,000 final finish. It polished almost as fast as grinding. See more

21.01.2022 Today i had a visit from a good friend Colin. he brought over his Dolby faceting machine that required a few cheater adjustments. we soon found that the index at 96 was aligned to the disc platen. So we found a few adjustment grub screws and were now able cut a square cut aligned to the index. We also were able to add an alignment pin so the dops would also align to index. A good result and now Colin has machine able to produce well aligned stones.

20.01.2022 This is what I do best. Its one of my old lap conversions. Its an 8 inch 8 mm thick copper lap that has been annealed and the centre recessed and filled with special alloy which is then pressed at high tonnage. I then machine it with a separation groove to keep the grades apart and finish the lap with a diamond tool. Looks great hey!!!!!!!!!! The second photo is an expanded disc 9 inches with a course and fine copper section with a special alloy centre for final polish.

20.01.2022 Im doing a large run of brass dopsticks. All sizes and machine types. Club purchases welcome. Small minimums. PM your requests

15.01.2022 As many in the Australian jewellery trade have heard Paul Fenselau has passed away. It doesn't happen very often but we do sadly lose our best and brightest. It will be a large hole left in our trade by this much loved and respected cutter. Scott Langford has ended up in hospital and I will be available for his customers to do repairs while he recovers. I offer a quick turn around and do most of what Scott could do. Wish you a speedy recovery and return to work. Please keep these trade legends in your thoughts and prayers Regards Anthony

12.01.2022 Just finished a major "cut to fit" onyx and diamond ring. It took 12 hours and many tooling experiments to get it across the line. Firstly you need a piece of onyx thats been squared and flattened to the correct depth.slightly larger than the setting. you then need to carve a hole slightly smaller than the centre setting with rounded corners for putting the corner faces later. i then start to fit it to the centre setting using an ultrsonic file with diamond. Lots of on/off th...e setting and since the jeweller set the centre first it got scuffed up badly. Its all about the order of operations. the second mistake was the setter reduced the outside of the setting just below the top off the setting making fitting it very difficult. Next was the outer fit and for that I tapered the sides at 88 degrees to lead the outer edge into the setting. The stepdown created by the setter meant the stone needed to be made thinner and the back burred extensively to clear the setting in the centre. the excessive amount of on/off during the fitting caused chipping of the stone and scuffing of the setting. Last was the polishing the top and putting a small anti chip outer edge. Done. Final word it pays and saves to consult your cutter before you print and cast your item when it involves intricate cutting work as we charge by the hour. See more

11.01.2022 So many dops ,so little time. Just making a large order of dopsticks that suit Dolby,Gemmasta and Agate Master. If you need some let me know.

04.01.2022 Started repairing this garnet, thought I would show you how I did it.First regrind then polish the table. Look for underlying damage from impacts. Grind the 4 mains after determining tha angle. You can find it using a sharpie. Also find the secondary mains. Polish all 12 mains. Cut stars leaving them open closing them with the pre-polish folled by final polish. Cut and polish the lower girdle facets. About an hours work.
