24.01.2022 The Warrwa Applicants had a meeting in Broome on Wednesday 17th August 2016 to discuss a number of Future Acts within their native title claim boundary. The meeting was facilitated by Jonathan Fulcher and Ruby Reyner of Hopgood Ganim, who are their legal advisers. Also attending was Nic Green of Anthropos Australis (WA) PL, who is the heritage manager for the Warrwa native title claimant group. Patricia Juboy opened the meeting by acknowledging the Yawuru people as the Tra...ditional Owners. The meeting dealt with a number of matters, with the most significant one being a presentation by Kevin Wilson of Rey Lennard Shelf PL, who is now the operator for a major Oil and Gas Exploration Tenement that covers a portion of the native title claim. The meeting discussed the application of a Heritage Protection Agreement to apply to the company's proposed exploration programme in 2016. The meeting was very informative and significant progress was made in a spirit of collaboration. Watch this space. Additionally, Anthropos Australis was officially appointed as the Agent for Warrwa on all cultural heritage matters pertaining to third party proponents seeking to access and use Warrwa country for exploration, mining and other development purposes. Nic Green advised that he was very honoured to be able to continue to provide a service to Warrwa to protect their heritage rights and interests. If you have any questions on any of the matters discussed in the meeting, please contact Ruby Reyner at [email protected] or 07 30240395.

The significant site was located during a heritage survey the Warrwa people completed last week under a Heritage Protection Agreement established wit...Continue reading

21.01.2022 We are pleased to announce that Kirsty Potts and two Ngarluma Consultants recently conducted the Return to Country of the cultural material excavated from the Ngurin #1 archaeological site, as the final output from our project entitled ‘The Excavation of Ngurin #1 Sharing Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Heritage’. The Return to Country was conducted with the support, co-operation and involvement of, and under the cultural direction of, members of the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporat...ion and the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation. We have completed our statutory reporting on the project for the State and we intend to publish the results of the excavation and analysis soon. We would like to thank the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation, the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation, the Ngarluma Elders Committee, the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi communities for their support and encouragement, as well as the Department of Environment and the Ngarluma Tharndu Karrunga Maya Limited who have contributed funding to this Project and we are very grateful for their support.

20.01.2022 Friday the 31st July marked a significant day for the Warrwa Traditional Owners as they participated in a Claimant Group Authorisation Meeting in Broome facilitated by the Kimberley Land Council (KLC) Representative Body to bring together the Mawadjala Gadjidgar Point Torment and the larger Warrwa Combined Native Title Claims. The all day meeting was well attended by Warrwa Traditional Owners, many of whom came from Darwin, Derby, Port Hedland, Karratha, Mullewa and Perth. P...rior to the Meeting, the Mawadjala Gadjidgar claimant group was represented by the KLC and the Warrwa Combined claimant group was represented by Hopgood Ganim Lawyers, Jonathan Fulcher and Kylie Pankhust, with Nicholas Green of Anthropos Australis WA Pty Ltd undertaking the latter’s heritage survey work. Given the two native title claims are within Warrwa’s traditional country, it made sense for the claims to come together, not combined, in order to fast track the research required for the Connection Report, which the KLC is best place to manage given that they receive funding from the Commonwealth for this purpose. After much discussion, the Warrwa Traditional Owners agreed to appoint 6 Applicants for each of the native title claims, for the KLC to represent them for the purpose of researching and prosecuting the claims, for Hopgood Ganim to manage the Future Acts and for Anthropos Australis WA Pty Ltd to manage the heritage survey work. A considerable amount of trust and goodwill was shown by the Warrwa Traditional Owners in accepting the new arrangement as the way forward to protect Warrwa’s rights and interests.

18.01.2022 Nic Green and Kirsty Potts of Anthropos Australis (WA) Pty Ltd have successfully completed an Ethnographic Survey with the Bunuba Dawangarri Aboriginal Corporation and a major mining company. Senior Bunuba Traditional Owners participated in the Survey, which was based out of Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley and was a great team effort. The Survey Team particularly enjoyed viewing the country over several helicopter flights, which allowed access to stunning country and enable...d them to identify several ethnographic sites that are otherwise difficult to reach. This was the first time BDAC and this company had worked together and everyone is looking forward to doing so again. Nic Green and Kirsty Potts were very pleased with the co-operation and collaboration shown by all parties and the spirit of good will that has resulted in a successful Survey. Anthropos Australis is proud to be the BDAC's heritage service provider.

14.01.2022 Anthropos Australis (WA) Pty Ltd recently joined forces with Adelaide based company, MLCS Corporate Pty Ltd, to submit a joint proposal to the Yinhawangka Aboriginal Corporation in Paraburdoo. The Corporation sought joint quotations from heritage service providers and business development firms to develop a Business Plan and a Transition Plan for the heritage services currently being undertaken on their behalf from the Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC) Representati...ve Body back to the Yinhawangka people to manage as they see fit. Our firms are jointly proud to announce that we have been awarded the work to develop the Plans for the Corporation and will be working collaboratively to ensure the proper, timely and cost effective transition of knowledge back to the Yinhawangka People. This process, which enables the Yinhawangka People to have a far greater say in the protection and management of their cultural heritage rights and interests is one of the many steps that they are taking to achieve true self determination for their Corporation and themselves said Nic Green (CEO of Anthropos Australis) and Paul Case (Director of MLCS Corporate).

10.01.2022 We are pleased to update you on the Anketell Project, which Anthropos Australis and the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation have been working collaboratively on this year for the Department of State Development. Since our last update on the Anketell Project several months ago, the archaeological Survey Team, which comprise Kirsty Potts, Shannon Smith and Ian Scott working with four Ngarluma Consultants, have examined a total of 43 km2 and have recorded over 160 Aboriginal Heritage Locations (Aboriginal sites). This has been a fantastic result and a great effort by the archaeological Survey Team, who have worked tirelessly to record the Survey area. The final Field Trip, due to start shortly, will be an Ethnographic Survey led by Nicholas Green and assisted by Kirsty Potts with the Ngarluma Elders.

04.01.2022 Ian Scott of Anthropos Australis and Will Bessen of Tuna Blue, working as a collaboration, have successfully conducted three workshops utilising an interactive Google Earth map for the South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. The Google Earth map will form part of the South Coast NRM’s Cultural Heritage Land and Sea Management Plan and identifies a number of distinct areas of cultural importance to the Wagyl Kaip and Esperance Nyungars native title claimant groups. These... areas have been the focus of varying levels of cultural heritage projects in the past. The finished map will contain a summary of the information known about each area including what type of Aboriginal sites can be found there, and a list of management recommendations. The map will also summarise 36 heritage reports that are the result of over nine years of consultation work by the South Coast NRM. The workshops, held in Albany, Cranbrook and Esperance last week, were held to also obtain direction from the Elders as to where should be the focus for future funding and planning by the South Coast NRM for cultural heritage projects. The Google Earth map allowed the Elders to interact with the data in a way that they have never done before, allowing them to easily view what is known about each location, provide their thoughts and recommendations, refine the boundaries and add new locations to the map. Overall, the response to having an interactive Google Earth map as a management tool has been extremely positive. One Elder stated that you’re on the right track, once you have it all mapped, it allows people to talk about their areas, and another Elder said that we can use the [interactive Management] Plan to provide information to the community which would be crucial to help improve communication. Anthropos Australis has utilised Google Earth as an interactive tool for mapping sites and recording cultural information for Traditional Owner groups now for several years and is well versed in its application. "We first rolled this out as an interactive tool for the Bunyjima and Nyiyaparli people in the Pilbara" said Nic Green, CEO "and we are delighted to help the Traditional Owners from Albany to Esperance in the same manner".
