Then, with consecutive slabs side by side and with our scaled drawings, each piece of the Counter is laid out, somewhat like a dressmaker’s template, choosing the best pattern and veining match. ... 07.01.2022 Talking Soapstone I was chatting with the lovely @halecottage1926 about materials that are popular overseas but haven’t seemed to have been adopted in Australia. She is Swedish and is struggling to source some beautiful products popular overseas. I feel similarly after working for several years in the US design industry. One of these materials is Soapstone. Soapstone is a durable natural stone comprised of ‘talc’. Steatite or Soapstone is easily ground into the fine white tal...c powder used in paint manufacturing, paper industry, plastics, ceramics and cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors. Many of the Australian quarries mining soapstone in Australia do so to produce talc for export, and don’t produce slabs for the domestic architectural market. There are large deposits of Steatite in South Australia. Sadly however, It is easier to source slabs from overseas vendors, and next to impossible to source locally. As a highly durable stone, that is resistant to cracking or chipping, has low porosity, Soapstone offers a hard working and beautiful surface material. Soapstone is characterised by veining similar to marble and hardness in line with granite. It varies in shades from soft grey, blue-grey to grey-green. If treated with mineral oil it takes on a rich silky patina.
