24.01.2022 "It is quite shocking that in a country like Australia there are kids going to bed hungry and going to school hungry. In a lot of cases mothers are skipping meals so that their kids aren't going hungry. It's just not right that things like this are happening" Have a listen to APW Executive Director Toni Wren on ABC Overnights discussing why we should #RaisetheRate. About 5 kids in a classroom of 30 are living in #poverty. The single most effective solution to reducing poverty in Australia would be a $75 a week increase in Newstart so that everyone can afford the basic necessities to live.
24.01.2022 Today marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. It's not right that 3 million Australians are living poverty - around 1 million of these people rely on the inadequate payments of #Newstart and #YouthAllowance. Anti-Poverty Week 2019 is supporting the #RaisetheRate campaign because it is the single most effective way to reduce poverty in Australia. Australia’s income support system was designed to help people when they are going through tough times however ...the current Newstart rate forces them into a cycle of debt, social isolation and humiliation that undermines their efforts and risks them slipping through the cracks into entrenched poverty. If you would like to share your experiences living on Newstart or Youth Allowance, let us know or visit https://raisetherate.org.au/ to share your story and join the campaign. 22.01.2022 Despite overall decreases in renting prices, the lower tiers have become more expensive. COVID-19 has worsened the rental market for those who are most vulnerable, and the proposed cuts to COVID-19 payments will worsen it. This #AntiPovertyWeek, we need to #cancelthecuts.
21.01.2022 The report by Deloitte Access Economics, commissioned by the Australian Council of Social Service, found that "cuts to JobSeeker and related payments will see the economy lose $31.3 billion and 145,000 full-time jobs over the next two years". This #AntiPovertyWeek, we need to #cancelthecuts and #RaisetheRateforGood to prevent more people falling into poverty. Take Action: Contact your local Member of Parliament to tell them here how devastating this cut will be for people's... health and finances: tinyurl.com/y3tr2d6w and visit www.raisetherate.org.au to see how you can get involved. 21.01.2022 At 17.7%, the percentage of children living in poverty is higher than the percentage of any other age group, with a high proportion of these children in families that rely on government payments. Temporary increases to these payments from the Coronavirus Supplement (CVS) has given some relief to these parents and the ~1,000,000 children that depend on them. In the Coronavirus Supplement survey conducted by the National Council of Single Mothers & Their Children as part of th...eir 550 Reasons to Smile campaign, NCSMC CEO Terese Edwards found that the supplement is helping women get the bond together to leave a situation of domestic violence, buy a family computer so kids can home school, put healthy food on the table three times a day and make it possible to repair cars and pay for other essentials like regular medication." This #AntiPovertyWeek, we need to #cancelthecuts to the CVS and #RaisetheRateforGood to ensure that every child has equal opportunities.
20.01.2022 Over half a million people have been cut off from Centrelink payments for not trying hard enough to land a job but the new #JobsSnapshot report from Anglicare Australia shows that the jobs just aren’t there. There are at least 5 people in the country competing for each job - it's even harder to find work for people with disabilities and older people who have lost their jobs later in life. 15.01.2022 An increase in Commonwealth Rent Assistance is well overdue. This #AntiPovertyWeek we need to ensure that the proposed cuts are cancelled and build social housing to ensure that everybody has a home. #cancelthecuts #BuildSocialHousing
14.01.2022 The planned cuts to the Coronavirus Supplement for people on JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and parenting payments would shrink the national economy by billions and... cost tens of thousands of jobs, finds a new report out today. The report by Deloitte Access Economics also finds the worst impacts would be in regional communities. More info: bit.ly/32unRiL We’re calling on the Government to extend the existing Coronavirus Supplement to prevent the devastating cuts of $300 per fortnight in two weeks and to put in place a permanent, adequate JobSeeker rate that means people can cover the basics. We need to Raise the Rate for Good! TAKE ACTION: Contact your local Member of Parliament to tell them here how devastating this cut will be for people's health and finances: tinyurl.com/y3tr2d6w And tell the Prime Minister and Treasurer what you think of the JobSeeker cut. Call the Prime Minister's office on 02 6277 7700 and the Treasurer's office on 02 6277 7340. www.raisetherate.org.au
14.01.2022 3/4 OF PEOPLE ON JOBSEEKER 'EXTREMELY WORRIED' ABOUT $300 A FORTNIGHT CUT Today we released the results of our survey of over 600 people on JobSeeker about how ...they feel about the September 25 JobSeeker cut. People told us that the $300 cut will have a substantial impact on their ability to cover the cost of housing, bills, medicine, food, and other essentials. More than half of people told us that they will definitely have to skip meals, and buy less fresh food when JobSeeker is cut in 2 weeks. People on JobSeeker need a permanent, adequate income, not a huge cut. The Government needs to listen to the evidence, to the people on JobSeeker, and act. Congratulations to all young writers and a big thank you to His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) Governor-...General of Australia and the organisations that made this possible! #APW2019

08.01.2022 Anglicare Australia's annual Jobs Availability Snapshot has found that disadvantaged jobseekers are competing with more people for fewer jobs. This year, the Snapshot found that: Eight of these jobseekers are competing for each entry-level job. In some parts of the country that number is as high as 20 and this assumes those jobseekers are competing only with one another. If all jobseekers are included, there are a staggering 106 jobseekers for each entry-level job.... Many of the jobseekers we look at in our Snapshot have been left out of the JobMaker scheme. On top of that, 1.63 million people are now underemployed. They could also be competing for these jobs. We need to support every Australian and #RaisetheRateforGood Read the report here: https://www.anglicare.asn.au//2020-jobs-availability-snaps
08.01.2022 Aussies living on Newstart and Youth Allowance are struggling to get by day to day. A $75 a week increase (or just over $10 a day) payments would make a huge difference to lives of nearly 1 million Australians. It would mean they would be able to afford to eat 3 meals a day, have the bus or train fare to go to job interviews and be confident they could pay their electricity bill. We can afford it. Call your MP or Senator on 02 6277 7111 to #RaisetheRate now.
07.01.2022 Thank you to fantastic organisations out there like OzHarvest and Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn who are doing amazing work to help the community. Over 3 million of us in the country are living in poverty - we need to do something about it. One of the best things we can do to help reduce poverty in Australia is to increase Newstart and Youth Allowance payments. It's time we #RaisetheRate this #AntiPovertyWeek. ... 07.01.2022 Child Poverty in Australia is a very real issue that affects 17.7% of children. The Coronavirus Supplement (CVS) of $550/fortnight has provided some temporary relief to ~1,000,000 children, however, is facing proposed cuts on September 25th. Get involved this #AntiPovertyWeek and urge your representatives to #cancelthecuts to the CVS and #RaisetheRateforGood to ensure that every child has equal opportunities. Watch our videographic which provides a brief overview of child poverty in Australia and visit our ‘Fast Facts’ series on our website https://antipovertyweek.org.au/resources/fast-facts/ for more information.
07.01.2022 A great insight from the WA 100 Families Project on the impact of the Coronavirus Supplement payment on families. It highlights why we need to keep payments above the poverty line this #AntiPovertyWeek and #cancelthecuts to the Coronavirus Supplement. https://youtu.be/4XuwZJZ63u0
