18.01.2022 Kintsugi The Japanese culture has a time honoured tradition for mending broken ceramics; KINT Gold; SUGI Join; = Golden Joinery Kintsugi is the artform of mending the breaks with lustrous gold (or silver) infused into urushi laquer. It offers new creative possibilities from an unfortunate event by transforming a treasured but broken item to a new level of artistry, beauty and value higher than its original intrinsic value.... A unique layer of beauty, character, potential and history, is imputed to the item, giving it a whole new life as a piece of especially cherished and beautiful piece of art; qualities it may never have previously enjoyed. These new qualities are a beautiful result from the process of brokenness to restoration. I have worked as a china and porcelain repairer for 17 years, always endeavouring to achieve invisible repairs, and to present the piece back to the owner as visually near perfect as possible. I discovered Kintsugi some time ago and am intrigued by its non-Western concept of celebrating the repair and making a feature and art form from it. It was a complete reversal of mind set for me. I see it not a celebration of brokenness and tragedy, but as a new beauty birthed through the process of restoration. 14.01.2022 This is a frog manufactured by Mc Hugh pottery in Launceston, Tasmania during the 1930s. When it arrived to me, all its feet and front legs were broken off and missing completely. Fortunately I was able to borrow a complete frog from a very kind collector here in Launceston so I could replicate the missing parts. Even though it is extensivly repaired, it will be feature for the owners collection as these frogs are very rare, hence they are highly prized and sought after. See the next post for the completed project! @ Launceston, Tasmania

08.01.2022 Large 1930s Plaster Art Noveau figurine came to me looking her age or more!!! There were years of accumulated dust and grime, and possibly smoke as well. Also a lot of damage to the plaster and paint work, and facial detail. The owner had the rewiring done and now she is holding a flame shaped globe aloft, as she graces the foyer of a heritage B&B here in beautiful Tasmania!
