23.01.2022 We’re all about evolving here at {antojitos}. This last week, after weeks of planning, we decided to switch our beef to carne asada- thinly sliced steak marinated in citrus, garlic, cilantro, and other goodies. You’ll find carne asada in nearly every taqueria in the U.S., and it’s a more expensive cut of beef. Our verdict? The beef suadero we were doing before reigns supreme. Just because everyone else is doing something doesn’t mean it’s great. Sure, we love carne asad...a, but when it comes to outright flavour and texture, we believe suadero wins....hands down. And while traditional suadero is served soft, we put ours on the griddle, after hours of cooking until tender, to give it a crispy, crusty texture. The best of both worlds. 17.01.2022 With the restaurant industry significantly affected recently as a result of COVID-19, our team at Antojitos has been working hard to make things work under tough restrictions. Some restaurants with adaptable concepts, such as us at {antojitos}, have remained open but have still had to adapt to significant restrictions such as takeaway-only. While the hospitality industry has taken a significant hit, we are truly grateful for the amazing support we have received and the oppo...rtunity to continue to trade through this time. We understand that many people out there are doing it tough...much tougher than we are. Out of appreciation to the Newcastle community, our team wants to pay all the amazing support we have received forward. Our philosophy behind {antojitos} is people food- no fuss, no fancy, no pretentious...just good, honest food in your hands that is accessible for everyone. We have been proactive in making changes to the operations of {antojitos} in response to coronavirus. These changes include a formal cleaning/hygiene plan, policies/procedures regarding illness, and a revised restaurant layout. However, we expect for you to experience as little disruption as possible to our normal standard of service. ... More specifically, these measures include: More regular sanitizing and cleaning of high contact surfaces using commercial-grade antibacterial and food grade sanitisers. Regular clearing of tables immediately after every use with sanitiser on tables, chairs and napkin dispensers. Regular washing of hands. Strict implementation of guidelines surrounding staff illness. Removal of tables and chairs to increase space between seating areas. We would also appreciate your support by implementing some simple practices: Using Tap & Go payments to avoid cash exchange. 15.01.2022 Our story of Mexican food begins in Watsonville, California where you’ll find acres of farmland, nice beaches, and a humble taqueria on nearly every corner. Where the best tacos didn’t come fancy, but made by hard working people that cared about what they were doing. Where you’d find a wide range of meats and offcuts, all prepared in a different way, but done to perfection. Five years ago, we started sharing our story at local markets where our goal was to NOT create innov...ative recipes, but to share simple, honest Mexican food you can find at any local taqueria. To this day, we focus on mastering basic recipes and using traditional cooking techniques to create kick ass Mexican food, done right. As {antojitos} has grown, we remain 100% committed to making basic Mexican food like the taquerias in California. To show an appreciation to those that painstakingly don’t take shortcuts, but make the best of everything they have. So, as we have grown, we realise our mission isn’t actually about the food, but about THE HARDWORKING PEOPLE BEHIND THE FOOD that are out in the fields picking your produce by hand, mixing the dough for your tortillas, and roasting the tomatoes for your salsa that deserve recognition. At the start of COVID in April, we decided to join a host of other local businesses in giving back to the local community. Three months later, and we’ve finally come to the end of our soup sale donations towards victims of domestic violence. In the last month, we have raised $2,246.00, which puts our final donation towards victims of domestic violence at $7,031.13. We are extremely grateful and proud of the support we have received, and the no compromise approach our team has put into preparing each pot of tortilla soup. 06.01.2022 NO SHORTCUTS TAKEN. We sometimes receive requests to extend our menu; offer this or that. We’re more focussed on offering less, while making what we do offer even better. For example, our salsa naranja requires grilling specific varieties of veg, toasting different chiles until just right, and then cooling the salsa before adding even more ingredients and blending. So while we appreciate the desire to offer more to the menu, the reality is that we are very busy attending to details to make what we do offer just right!
