25.01.2022 I'm excited to be pulling all our (Jen & Anu) hours of juice creating the Resources for the Gypsy Jazz Ukecamp Repertoire, into neat little teaching packages for each Song we covered in the Ukecamp. Our first 'Song Swag' is for Dark Eyes( of course) so you can share it with your friends and students easily. It's still 13 pages long but a focused distillation of best exercise practices, Warmups, Practice and Backing track and video urls. Embed it all another notch, by teaching it ! More coming soon in the newsletter next week

23.01.2022 Booking portal is now open under the Shop tab on my website anugrace.com. Cant wait to get back to this!

21.01.2022 Dust off the charts, stumble over the triads again, dig out your bad Russian accent, we're revisiting next Saturday 22nd !!

21.01.2022 Jen and I are back rowing the boat to Magnetic Island anyway! Come on Ye hearties, we haven't forgotten you. Lets recap all we have learnt so far adding teaching lead sheets for a more simplified form to present to your groups. Jen has been working out great ways to teach these songs in her Swingalong Ukestra and we want to empower you to share these songs with your groups. We'll also add a new 'Joseph Joseph' swag and some other goodies. Look out for more details soon.....

21.01.2022 Gypsy Jazz Zoom Ukecamp Feedback I enjoyed it all very much although found it demanding, which is probably a good thing. There were advantages from my perspective in having it on Zoom; firstly I would not have coped well in a short intensive course over a few days because I needed the time for absorbing the theory and practicing the exercises that the Zoom approach presented; secondly the recording of the zoom sessions were an enormous help because I could pick up on bits I ...missed first time around and also had the opportunity for lots of play along practice with Anu and Jen; and finally there was less pressure trying to avoid mistakes because being muted I was protected! The disadvantages with Zoom was in not knowing how I fitted into the group in terms of skills level; and not having interaction with other group members which can be most helpful in a practical sense as well as a social sense. I thought the teaching with Zoom by Anu and Jen was excellent. It is hard for teachers to assess the progress of their students as getting instant feedback is difficult using this medium. However the teachers were observant and adapted their approach as sessions developed. They dealt well with the odd Zoom hiccup. The written exercises and worksheets were well done and I shall enjoy going through all of them in the future. The theory about chords and triads presented by Jen is making more sense to me each time I review the sheets, and her explanatory notes, which were pretty much a mystery to me at first, I now find very helpful indeed. I also loved the warm up exercises presented by Anu and Jen. Making the self video was not easy but a good way of forcing me to listen to myself. I did not do it very well but know what I need to do to improve. It is also a great way of having a record to keep and an opportunity to hear what it might have sounded like if the group could have all played together in the sessions. I really appreciate the time and effort you have put into this course. Thank you both so much. Well done indeed. Cheers Margaret Cartwright (alias Babushka)

21.01.2022 Heres a recent version of Dark Eyes which Jen Hawley has conducted at the Turramurra Music Camp last week. I so love her solo and it shows that while soloing may only be for a few, these songs still work and can be quite evocative in a big ensemble. Our next offering at Magnetic Gypsy Jazz Ukecamp is to make these kinds of arrangements accessible for you to lead in your group .... and the promised Joseph Joseph! Stay tuned!!

19.01.2022 Swingin' Yr Blues Uke is another initiative of Jen Hawely and myself, taking a few steps back from Gypsy Jazz into more foundational material based around the blues. The 40 page manual has just come back from the printer and I'm excited to be teaching this as a 'live' class at Witchy Ukes in Margaret River from next Wed 19th and Sat 22nd for 10 weeks. If you want to study with us but can't attend in person you still can! Each session will have a special video made to accompany the Blues manual. Backing track urls and songs to listen to will be emailed as well as a digital download of the Blues manual if you can't pick up a hard copy. Bookings under the Shop tab at www.anugrace.com

17.01.2022 hmmmm failing to have the 4 grand for a mattesen brass resonator - I'm thinking this Kala is halfway decent- nothing to do with the exquisite playing tho...

16.01.2022 Here's what we will be covering in our latest Djam session on Minor Swing this Saturday 2-4pm (Bris). If you can't make it -think about just accessing the Zoom session video and resources. (The recorded Djam sessions available on Youtube )"is a great option and in fact access to the program and resources is just amazing as I won't get to actively participate in the sessions after this one. I know I will never master these skills but I am finding it an exhilarating challenge. Just what I need for my aging fingers, brain and my heart. I have accepted that I don't need to be an expert as long as I enjoy it." Best Hazel Wilton

04.01.2022 Many thanks to Townsville City Council and Qld Arts for making the Gypsy Jazz Ukecamp happen - in the end on Zoom! We had a month of free warmup sessions for townsville peeps and wider Australasia which drew more than a 100 participants. That was followed by a month of 5 intensive sessions per week at varying levels ( altho most people still attended the advanced 301 sessions) It was a wonderful success and will only grow a dedicated larger Gypsy jazz uke community from here. Bring on Magnetic Uke camp 2021 !!

02.01.2022 perhaps we should all be learning mouth trumpet for Caravan - this is so slick !

01.01.2022 We are playing Yardee Creek Caravan Park on the mighty Ningaloo Reef! Where? ...as west as you can go west - round the tip from Exmouth and down in the Cape National Park. When .. Monday night from 6pm. A great place! to try our new song called WEST !

01.01.2022 The Magnetic Gypsy Jazz Ukecamp 2021 is happening again online this year. We are still holding onto the dream for Magnetic Island in 2022 but as many of us are again in lockdown, we'll be revisiting and reviewing all the deep foundational work we put in on those 6 gypsy jazz tunes last year. As part of the 5 Zoom sessions we're also offering a totally new swag download of scales and exercises and solos for the great tune 'Joseph Joseph' as well as having a play through al...l 13 tunes in our DJAM book "13 Tunes for Gypsy Jazz Ukulele. We even have a more introductory 1st session for newcomers to Gypsy Jazz Uke where we work the C minor penta and triads to get the feel of soloing on C jam Blues! Super fun stuff! This is available as a one off taster session which you can book separatey to the 5 sessions to see if this is your new uke thing! This first session is suitable for folks who are curious about how to solo on Ukulele, want to play notes and melody and already know their C minor pentatonic Scale! Bookings are now up and running at www.anugrace.com See more
