23.01.2022 A team of scientists at Cardiff University and other joint universities across the UK and the world have published a study which has the possibility of being the first signs of extraterrestrial microbial life in the upper atmosphere of Venus! While the discovery is not conclusive, the study looked at phosphine levels in the atmosphere of our sister planet (a gas which is a key bio-signature used to indicate the possible presence of life) and found too much of the gas to be accounted for by our current understanding of abiotic chemistry on the planet. This could be the first of many ground-breaking discoveries to come, improving our understanding of the Venusian atmosphere! We look forward to hearing from the team's future progress as they increase their focus on this exciting discovery!

19.01.2022 If you had USD $2m to build a satellite company how would you do it? Saber Astronautics, located in Sydney, is a company which aims to reduce the barrier of entry to space by making spaceflight so easy even your kids can use it! Quest for Blue is a competition opening on October 1st, in which competitors will design a space mission using Saber Astronautics’ software, the Predictive Ground station Interface (PIGI). The space mission will require one or more spacecraft to... pass over ground stations. Your main goal is to accumulate the most customers with the constellation that you design. Throughout the challenge, you will get templates and other training materials for your submission. At the end of the challenge you will submit a 2-page business document containing a brief summary of your mission, as well as the PIGI output files for industry experts to review. The best designs will win cash prizes and potential internships with our sponsors! Saber Astronautics has also built a program called TAROT, which is a live satellite tracking software, and can be found through the following link. https://tarot.saberastro.com/ If you’re interested in this amazing opportunity, the registration link for Quest for Blue is down below! https://questforblue.saberastro.com/

11.01.2022 Dear Astronomy Lovers, As you may already be aware, in order to combat the spread of COVID-19, ANU has decided to cancel all co-curricular events and activities held on campus for the rest of Semester 1. This has led to many clubs and societies following suit under the university’s recommended response. While it pains us to do so, we have also decided to cancel our current plans for activities during Semester 1 this year. We apologise to everyone who has signed-up for a membership and become involved with the club already, and we can only hope for an amazing second semester later this year. The Astro Exec Team

09.01.2022 hey guys Kathy usually writes these ones but she's super flat out at the moment. She said "Copy and paste this EXACTLY. NO MEMES! The Earth will block about 56% of the Sun's light from directly reaching the Moon's surface with the outer part of its shadow, called the "penumbra". Watch times are: Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane (AEST) 3.45am Sat, 6 Jun Perth, Broome (AWST) 1.45am Sat, 6 Jun Adelaide, Darwin (ACST) 3.15am Sat, 6 Jun Tag or send us any astro shots for a feature " I also drew a bit of a diagram as I reckon its a bit confusing (not to scale) Hope it helps - Clintern

01.01.2022 Happy Astronomy day! May 2nd marks the day we celebrate the oldest science of looking up at the stars, wondering our place in the vast expanse of the universe. It is our collective curiosity that can help bring us together, and while normally we would bring out the telescopes, tonight our viewing will have to be from home. Even if it’s something as simple as a space or sci-fi movie, hopefully we can all take part in the celebration of the desire to know more about the uni...verse. Clear skies, Astro Society Exec Team
