25.01.2022 Can you be really, really, ridiculously good looking and still be a good actor? This week's ANUFG@Home picks seek to answer that question by putting the spotlight on none other than Jude Law. The charismatic and talented English actor has nearly 60 big screen credits to his name, effortlessly showcasing his acting chops in both indie films and large blockbuster franchises over the years. We've picked five must-see Jude Law performances for your viewing pleasure, beginning wit...h one of his very first roles in 1997's GATTACA. Set in a future society driven by eugenics where genes dictate your social standing, Law plays a former swimmer who is paralysed after being hit by a car but whose DNA is otherwise perfect (of course). Starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, Andrew Niccol's terrific and thought-provoking sci-fi film is available to stream for free now on SBS On Demand. Find direct links to it and the rest of our picks THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW and BLACK SEA on our website at www.anufg.org.au/athome

25.01.2022 Would you like to volunteer as tribute and join the ANU Film Group committee? Our committee is typically selected at our Annual General Meeting in March each year, but casual vacancies can occur if not all spots are filled at the AGM or a committee member resigns. As it happens, we currently have a few casual vacancies on the committee and are putting a call out to see if anyone is keen on helping out! As you probably know, since it began in 1966, the ANUFG has been run by a ...team of volunteers who do everything from being on duty at screenings to booking our films, designing our publications, updating our Facebook page and everything in between. Running Australia’s largest film society is a lot of work, but it’s worth it and there are a couple of perks including free membership too! If you are currently a member and think you might be interested in filling one of our committee’s casual vacancies, please send us an email to [email protected] with a bit about yourself and why you’d like to get involved, preferably by Sunday 11 July. Alternatively, you can also reach out if you’d simply like to know more about what the role entails. Either way, we look forward to hearing from you!

25.01.2022 In 1958, Richard and Mildred Loving are arrested and banished from their home state of Virginia for violating local laws prohibiting interracial marriage. Determined to return to their roots and family, they take their case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. This particular love story has the bonus of being true, based on the powerful, if painful, events that led to 1967's landmark Loving v Virginia case. Starring Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, LOVING is available to stream for free now on SBS On Demand as part of our ANUFG@Home focus on star-crossed lovers. Find direct links to it and the rest of our picks at www.anufg.org.au/athome

24.01.2022 Jude Law stars in this underseen and underrated thriller as a submarine captain who risks everything in search of a U-boat that sunk during WWII carrying a cargo of Nazi gold. Alongside great character actors like Ben Mendelsohn and Scoot McNairy, Law shines as the conflict-ridden leader of a motley crew whose greed quickly gets the better of them. BLACK SEA is the last of our ANUFG@Home Jude Law focus for the week, and is available to stream on SBS On Demand for free, as well as on Netflix. Find direct links at www.anufg.org.au/athome and stay tuned for another week of picks coming soon!

24.01.2022 Not all heist films have to be thrillers. Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline and Michael Palin star as a gang of diamond thieves who embroil a hapless lawyer (John Cleese) in their double-crossing schemes in this brilliant Oscar-winning comedy. Of its many claims to fame, it was reportedly responsible on release for causing a man to have a heart attack from laughing too hard! A FISH CALLED WANDA is available to stream on Stan as part of our ANUFG@Home focus on heist films. Find direct links at www.anufg.org.au/athome and stay tuned for a whole new week of picks coming soon!

23.01.2022 Any Oscar list featuring Meryl Streep would be remiss not to also include Daniel Day-Lewis, the only person to have won Best Actor three times. MY LEFT FOOT was the film that earned him his first Oscar win, for playing Irishman Christy Brown, who despite only being able to control his left foot due to cerebral palsy, lived a remarkable life as a writer and artist. Stream MY LEFT FOOT on SBS On Demand for free as part of our ANUFG@Home focus on Oscar-winning performances based on real-life people. Find direct links and more at www.anufg.org.au/athome

22.01.2022 All deaths are unexpected but this one perhaps a little more than most: RIP Chadwick Boseman, lost to cancer at just 42 years old.

20.01.2022 Absence, as the proverb says, makes the heart grow fonder. And that's no more evident in this week's ANUFG@Home selections which take a look at star-crossed love stories in films. Whether torn apart by society, politics, marriage or distance, these picks demonstrate the power of love to overcome any obstacle. Begin your viewing with one of the best films of 2018: a passionate Polish masterpiece that is a love story for the ages. 20.01.2022 We're back with more ANUFG@Home recommendations this week after a brief hiatus! This week, we're looking at some of our favourite heist films because there's nothing quite like seeing a plan come together. Case in point for your Friday night viewing: the terrific AMERICAN ANIMALS. Part true crime thriller, part documentary, but as compelling as any Hollywood blockbuster, the film follows four well-off American college students who attempt an audacious plot to steal a number o...f rare books from a university library not for financial gain, but purely out of boredom. After so many months of restrictions, we can certainly sympathise! Find direct streaming links to AMERICAN ANIMALS as well as THE ITALIAN JOB, BAD GENIUS, A FISH CALLED WANDA and THE BANK JOB as part of our ANUFG@Home heists week at www.anufg.org.au/athome As always, most of the films are available to stream for free. What a steal!

19.01.2022 In case you're thinking that South Korean cinema is just zombies and monsters, this next film will serve as a suitable palate cleanser... Based on a true story, HERSTORY tells the story of ten Korean women who were dragged away from their homes and forced into sexual slavery as 'comfort women' by the Japanese army during WWII. Exploring their plight through the legal system, this powerful courtroom drama presents an overlooked chapter of South Korean history that will definitely tug at your heart strings. HERSTORY is available to stream for free on SBS On Demand as part of our ANUFG@Home focus on recent South Korean cinema. Find direct links and more at www.anufg.org.au/athome

19.01.2022 The less you know about our final film, the better... One of the most acclaimed films of 2018, BURNING is the South Korean adaptation of a Haruki Murakmi short story chronicles the tense relationship that between an aspiring novelist, his childhood friend, and a wealthy businessman. What ensues is a slow-burning (pun fully intended), psychological thriller that you won't be forgetting anytime soon. BURNING is available to stream for free on Kanopy. Stay tuned for more ANUFG@Home picks and updates later this week!

19.01.2022 With today's announcement that the ACT lockdown will be extended until September 2, it should come as no surprise that we won't be back and screening before then either. But if you need more than film suggestions to get you through the lockdown, don't forget that you are not alone and that there are a range of services offering suppo...rt: Coronavirus Mental Wellbeing Support Service: 1800 512 348 Lifeline: 131 114 Kids Helpline: 1800 55 1800 Free food and essentials are also available to anyone in significant need. 19.01.2022 How do you win an Oscar? Over the past 50 years, nearly a third of Best Actor or Best Actress Oscar winners have been awarded for roles based on real people. Whether it's a famous historical figure or someone who overcame great adversity in his or her life or both the Academy seems to love rewarding famous people playing other famous people. This week's ANUFG@Home picks consist of a few prime examples of this increasingly common trend. Are these deserving winners of the i...ndustry's highest accolade or just impressive impersonators? Kick off your viewing with 2011's THE IRON LADY, a look at the early years of the UK's first-ever female Prime Minister. While the film itself was relatively straightforward, Streep's performance as Margaret Thatcher was one of her best. And that's saying something for someone with three Oscar wins and 21 nominations under her belt! Find direct streaming links to THE IRON LADY as well as MY LEFT FOOT, LA VIE EN ROSE, THE PIANIST and THE REVENANT on our website now at www.anufg.org.au/athome

18.01.2022 Adrien Brody also made history when he became the youngest person to win the Best Actor Oscar at the age of just 29. What were you doing when you were 29? Based on the memoir by Wladyslaw Szpilman, his raw and moving film followed the Polish-Jewish musician as he struggled to survive World War II amidst the ruins of Nazi-occupied Warsaw. THE PIANIST is available to stream for free on SBS On Demand as part of our ANUFG@Home week of Oscar-winning performances. Find direct links and more at www.anufg.org.au/athome

18.01.2022 Congratulations to Joe Biden but why not indulge in an alternate reality where George Clooney runs for U.S. President? An idealistic staffer (Ryan Gosling) working for a promising U.S. Presidential candidate (George Clooney) has his world turned upside down when the campaign is rocked by corruption and scandal. This acclaimed, Oscar-nominated political thriller may not be real but that doesn't stop it from hitting hard, thanks to its outstanding cast of players. THE IDES OF MARCH is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video as part of a paid subscription. Find direct links to it and the rest of our American Scandal picks for the week at www.anufg.org.au/athome

17.01.2022 The final film on our WTF movies list for the week stars Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem as a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home. At least that's what it appears to be on the surface. Director Darren Aronofsky's controversial psychological thriller generated much discussion and confusion upon release in 2017, and its metaphorical (and violent) nature is still very much debatable today. Not for the faint of heart, MOTHER! is available to stream for free on SBS On Demand. Find all of our picks at www.anufg.org.au/athome and stay tuned for a new week of ANUFG@Home recommendations coming later this week!

17.01.2022 A landmark of the psychological horror genre which has taken on a whole new meaning in the #metoo era, the Oscar-winning ROSEMARY'S BABY follows a young woman (Mia Farrow) who moves into a New York apartment with her husband. When she becomes pregnant, she finds herself increasingly isolated from the world, her friends and her eccentric neighbours. But is there a conspiracy at play, or is she simply being paranoid? ROSEMARY'S BABY is the last film in our ANUFG@Home Happy Halloween picks, and is available to stream for free on SBS On Demand now. Find direct links and the rest of our selections at www.anufg.org.au/athome and stay tuned for more coming soon!

17.01.2022 And last, but certainly not least, is Leonardo DiCaprio. After trying so hard for what seemed like a very, very long time, Leo finally won his Oscar for playing real-life frontiersman Hugh Glass in director Alejandro González Iñárritu's epic period drama. Both the film and DiCaprio's committed performance are beautiful, punishing and enduring in equal measure. THE REVENANT is available to stream on Netflix, concluding our ANUFG@Home week of Oscar-winning performances based on real people. Stay tuned for more picks coming later this week!

16.01.2022 Marion Cottilard made history when she became the first person to win an acting Oscar for a French-language performance believe it or not but what a performance it was! Intensely acclaimed, her virtuoso turn as French singer Édith Piaf was ferocious and mesmerising, elevating the decades-spanning biopic to a whole other level. LA VIE EN ROSE is available to stream free on SBS On Demand as part of our ANUFG@Home week of Oscar-winning performances. Find direct links and more at www.anufg.org.au/athome

14.01.2022 Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda has made a career out of crafting moving stories about families and his Palme d'Or-winning 2018 film SHOPLIFTERS is one of his best. On the outskirts of Tokyo, a dysfunctional makeshift family of outsiders rely on shoplifting to survive. When the family's patriarch comes across a young girl who doesn't seem to have anywhere to go, he takes her under their wing to unexpected outcomes for the whole family. SHOPLIFTERS is available for free on SBS On Demand as part of our Father's Day ANUFG@Home focus. Find direct streaming links at www.anufg.org.au/athome and stay tuned for another week of picks coming soon!

14.01.2022 Father's Day is on Sunday and there's certainly no shortage of beloved films about great on-screen dads from MRS. DOUBTFIRE to TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and, yes, even TAKEN. But here are a couple of picks from off the beaten path that you may not have seen all of which are available to stream for free on SBS On Demand, just in case you haven't gotten dad a gift yet! You can thank us later and get started with LEAVE NO TRACE, in which a PTSD-suffering war veteran (Ben Foster) a...nd his teenage daughter have been living off the grid in an Oregon forest for years until a mistake derails their idyllic existence. This American indie is a deep and affecting story of love and survival, and one of the rare films to hold a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating from critics. Find direct links to LEAVE NO TRACE and the rest of our Father's Day ANUFG@Home picks SHOPLIFTERS, PAPER MOON, GRADUATION and TWO IS A FAMILY on our website now at www.anufg.org.au/athome

14.01.2022 Sometimes the less you know about a film, the better your experience is discovering its secrets as they unfold on-screen. If you haven't seen it yet, 2012's THE CABIN IN THE WOODS is precisely that kind of film. In the film, a group of teenagers spend the weekend at a deserted cabin, but soon fall victim to horrors lurking in the woods. Sure, it may start off like your typical horror/slasher film but it is so, so much more. Again, the less said, the better but know that you are in for an astonishingly clever film that turns the genre on its head. THE CABIN IN THE WOODS is available to stream on Netflix as part of our ANUFG@Home week of WTF movies. Find direct links and more at www.anufg.org.au/athome

13.01.2022 In 1969, U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy brother of John and Bobby is embroiled in scandal after a fatal car accident claims the life of a young female campaign strategist. The incident forever alters his political legacy and ultimately changes the course of presidential history in this stirring look at an American political dynasty and the power of the truth. Find direct links to it and the rest of our picks for the week at www.anufg.org.au/athome

13.01.2022 An oldie but a goodie for your Sunday afternoon viewing with THE ITALIAN JOB! This iconic British caper stars Michael Caine in one of his most memorable roles as the leader of a gang of crooks who set out to steal a shipment of gold bullion from the streets of Turin, Italy using Mini Coopers as getaway cars. The less said about the 2003 remake starring Mark Wahlberg, the better. Not enough cockney accents, in our opinion...... Stream THE ITALIAN JOB for free on SBS On Demand as part of our ANUFG@Home heists week. Find links and more at www.anufg.org.au/athome

12.01.2022 In his breakout, star-making role, Jude Law stars as rich playboy Dickie Greenleaf. Yearning for a better life, young, talented underachiever Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) agrees to perform an errand from Dickie's father to retrieve his son from Italy a task which is easier said than done. Law received his first Oscar nomination for his part in director Anthony Minghella's dark and intelligent thriller, starring alongside an all-star cast including Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY is available to stream on Stan with a subscription. Find direct links to it and the rest of our ANUFG@Home Jude Law picks for the week at www.anufg.org.au/athome

12.01.2022 From THE ITALIAN JOB to the not-so-creatively titled THE BANK JOB... But fear not, this isn't some generic Jason Statham action vehicle or one of those many mindless FAST AND FURIOUS flicks, as this image here may lead you to believe. Based on a scandalous true story of the 1971 Baker Street heist, the film follows a crew of unlikely misfits who attempt to pull off a lucrative job with links all the way to the British Royal family. Thoroughly entertaining, fast paced and a g...reat deal of fun. Stream THE BANK JOB for free on SBS On Demand as part of our ANUFG@Home week of heist films. Find links and more at www.anufg.org.au/athome

11.01.2022 With the results of the U.S. election still up in the air, why not take a look at some other American political scandals with this week's ANUFG@Home picks instead? Some of these are films are based on true events, some decidedly aren't, but who's to say whether fact is stranger than fiction anymore? A great place to start is THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7, which is now streaming on Netflix. When the U.S. government charges a group of anti-Vietnam War protesters with conspiracy, t...he stage is set for a controversial and explosive legal battle that gets the whole world watching. Directed by Aaron Sorkin and with a terrific ensemble cast, this is a resonant look back at a turbulent and all too timely period of American history. Also starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie, it was one of the first films to experiment blending actors with wholly CG backdrops and was also one of SIX films that Law appeared in 2004. 08.01.2022 Just a friendly reminder that tonight’s screening of SUPERNOVA will be starting at 7:30 PM, and not 5 PM as originally scheduled, due to a venue booking issue. And given today’s wet and windy weather, it’s a great time to make use of the underground parking right beneath the Cultural Centre which is free for the first three hours on weekends!

07.01.2022 In accordance with the latest ACT Health orders and ANU restrictions on on-campus events, we regret to inform you that all screenings from tonight (Thursday 12 August) onwards will be postponed until further notice. We will endeavour to re-schedule any postponed screenings as soon as we have a better idea of when screenings will be permitted to resume, and will of course also be offering some form of membership extension so that none of you are out of pocket. More details will be announced at a later date, but in the meantime, please look after yourselves and stay safe. We’ll all be back at the movies before you know it!

04.01.2022 It’s officially been one month since the ACT was sent into lockdown and ANU Film Group screenings were put on hold. While there are no doubt more urgent things going on, we wanted to provide a brief update about our future screenings. We've had to cancel the remainder of our Spring season, which was intended to run until October 2, regardless of whether Canberra comes out of lockdown this coming Thursday. The current advice from the ACT Government is that, even if the lockdow...n ends, restrictions will be eased gradually, and we have received a similar indication from the ANU that public events such as ours won't likely be permitted to return to campus yet. The ANU Film Group will eventually return, but we simply can't make any future plans at this stage until we have a more definitive idea of when it will be safe for screenings to resume. Until then, we want to assure our members that they will not lose out as a result of this temporary intermission. As we did during last March's hiatus, we will be extending all current Annual and Spring 2021 season members by a period of time equal to, if not exceeding, the shutdown duration. This will happen automatically when screenings resume and there’s nothing you need to do. If, however, your personal circumstances make it unlikely that you will return when screenings resume, we can also offer pro rata refunds for anyone who requires one. If you'd like a refund, please send an email to [email protected] with your membership number and we’ll get in touch with next steps. Stay safe, everyone!

04.01.2022 In the future, a childlike android (Haley Joel Osment) longs to become a real boy and is assisted on his quest by a robot prostitute named Gigolo Joe, played with glee by Jude Law. Steven Spielberg's sci-fi drama was the realisation of an idea initially developed by Stanley Kubrick, and the result is a fascinating amalgamation of styles and ideas. A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE is available to stream now for free on SBS On Demand. Find direct links and more of our ANUFG@Home Jude Law spotlight at www.anufg.org.au/athome

03.01.2022 Yorgos Lanthimos may now be best known for 2018's Oscar-winning period drama THE FAVOURITE, but the Greek director's filmography is full of uniquely offbeat cinematic treats like DOGTOOTH and THE LOBSTER. THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER is no exception. It's an unsettling thriller about a doctor (Colin Farrell) whose life is turned upside down by a teenage boy (Barry Keoghan) with a connection to his past. Also starring Nicole Kidman, there's no denying the film has a unique style all its own, with its stilted dialogue and off-putting eeriness. See what you think of it THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER is available to stream on SBS On Demand as part of our ANUFG@Home week of WTF movies. Find direct links and more at www.anufg.org.au/athome

03.01.2022 It's no secret that the ANU Film Group isn't like most cinemas. What sets us apart from our commercial counterparts is usually to our advantage (lower costs, no ads, not for profit), but we also operate on the ANU’s campus and are therefore beholden to their rules and regulations. So despite cinemas around Canberra gradually re-opening, the ANU has made the decision to continue restricting all non-essential activities involving external visitors until the end of Semester Two ...to mitigate the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak on campus. Regretfully, this means that we are now unable to resume screenings until November 2020. We realise that this is highly disappointing news, but it is just an extended intermission, not a curtain call. We have posted a full statement on our website, which you can find here: www.anufg.org.au/news/430 In short, all current memberships will be accordingly extended until screenings resume but we are also able to offer pro-rata refunds for anyone who needs it. Thanks to all of you for your continued understanding and support over the past few months. We will continue to keep ANUFG@Home going at www.anufg.org.au/athome as well as here on Facebook, so please keep in touch and continue watching movies. In the immortal words of The Terminator, we’ll be back... not right now, but soon!
