24.01.2022 "Unlike the crumple zone in a car, which is made to protect the human driver, the moral crumple zone reverses this dynamic, allowing the perception of a flawless technology to remain intact at the expense of the human operator." As autonomous systems and AI continue to develop and proliferate, humans still play a role as "overseer" and "backup" for automated processes. However, as Madeleine Clare Elish writes, there is more to this dynamic than first meets the eye: What are the limits of a given autonomous system, and how can they be discerned? And what would it mean for the allocation of responsibility when things go wrong?

23.01.2022 To mark International Women's Day this year we are celebrating some of the women who have made an immense contribution to the research, advocacy and leadership in the area of legal technology. The first woman that we are celebrating is Dr Phillippa Ryan. Dr Philippa Ryan is a barrister and a senior lecturer at the ANU College of Law, where she is the director of the Master of Laws (LLM) program. She is an expert in commercial equity, in particular the liability of third par...ties to a breach of trust. Her PhD formulated a new classification for accessorial liability. Her research explores trust and distrust in digital economies and autonomous systems, including smart contracts enabled by blockchain technology. In June 2019, she published her second legal technology book ‘Trust and Distrust in Digital Economies’. It explores the ‘platformisation' of everything enabled by the internet and the rapidly expanding ecosystem fuelled by data in our current digital economy. Pip - we recognise you for leading the way for students to get involved in considering the challenges that automation and AI present to liberal democratic governments, administrators and public law generally. We also thank you for advocating for students to participate in various global legal hackathons and initiatives (including the HSF Computational Law e-Moot), as well as to this journal. You have been instrumental in shining light on the most topical issues and you have helped the journal to grow alongside this space. Thank you for being an inspiring female leader who is breaking fresh ground in the world of legal technology. #iwd2020 #EachforEqual #anucollegeoflaw #legaltech #futurelawyers

05.01.2022 As the space race continues with NASA's Mars Planetary Rover and SpaceX's recent launches, humanity is becoming one step closer in space exploration. Space tourism and habitation is becoming a more viable option and questions of legality and ethics must be considered. A question which the Space Legal Issues addresses is the question of intellectual property created in space. What if an invention was created at the space station? Who would own this intellectual property? "...The protection of inventions is subject to the applicable territorial legal framework. We therefore wondered whether, ultimately, this territorial competence did not authorize an extension of national law to the objects that each country launched into space. Indeed, if rules exist for most of the States in this area, what about when one leaves the principle of territoriality to join outer space?"
