25.01.2022 If you’re an ANU student and haven’t updated your electoral roll details since moving to the ACT, get on it now!! It’s more important than ever that we have a strong progressive turnout so make sure to update your details before 6pm on Friday! https://www.aec.gov.au/enrol/update-my-details.htm
25.01.2022 These fee hikes represent yet another attempt by the liberal government to push our higher education sector towards a two-tiered system. This government is actively reducing funding for degrees that encourage critical thinking, as well as reducing funding to many STEM degrees, such as Environmental science. We at ANU Labor Left condemn this, and are standing with the National Union of Students against this bill.
24.01.2022 Horrifying news this morning from the federal government who are looking to increase fees for some uni courses by over 100%. Join us outside the press club at 12pm today to stand against these cuts and let the Education Minister know that students will not let this pass without a fight. And finally, if you’re interstate and can’t make it to the rally today, please jump on Twitter and retweet this tweet from the NUS President and tag the Education Minister @dantehan https://...twitter.com/NUS_Preside/status/1273612690213097472 https://facebook.com/events/s/snap-action-against-the-fee-hi/2837323866529247/?ti=icl
23.01.2022 Cw: Police Brutality, Cultural genocide ~ ~ ~... The destruction of the sacred Djab Wurrung trees by the Andrews Labor government in Victoria today is absolutely abhorrent and should be vehemently condemned. The destruction of sites such as these, all too common across Australia, is nothing short of cultural genocide against our First Nations people. If you have the capacity, we encourage you to contact Daniel Andrews at [email protected] or (03) 9651 5000 and tell him this destruction needs to stop.
22.01.2022 On National Sorry Day let us remember the abuse of the rights of the Aboriginal children taken from their mothers and families. Let us remember the genocide th...at was intended, and let us celebrate the triumph of those children despite their adversity. Let us acknowledge the courage of the nation to apologise to help healing and for the truth to be heard.
21.01.2022 Great stuff from ACT Labor despite widespread opposition from Christian groups in the last few weeks. It’s important that we continue our fight against the hyper conservative liberal opposition here in the ACT
19.01.2022 Appalling job cuts across campus. It’s vital that students and staff resist this.
18.01.2022 Join ANU Labor Left and thousands of others tomorrow at 10:30am in Garema Place to show solidarity with the George Floyd protests in America, and protest the institutionalised racism that Indigenous people face here in Australia. If you’ve felt anger and outrage over the past few days and the scenes we’ve been seeing in America, but also in our own country, channel that anger into standing in solidarity with our First Nations comrades. Nothing will change if we don’t stand ...together. Please be mindful of health, the protest organisers are encouraging everyone to wear masks and practice social distancing where possible. If you feel at all unwell, please do not attend the rally. We hope to see many of you our in force tomorrow in Canberra, or across the country in the coming days
13.01.2022 Resources! CW: brief mentions of racism and police brutality ... As a follow up to our previous post, over the next few days we will be sharing some useful resources and important events that all of us, but especially allies can use to educate ourselves without relying on the emotional labour of POC. We’ll start of today with a huge shout out to last years ANU Labor Left Convenor and current club member Zoe Ranganathan for compiling this amazing document full of resources for how we can all be better allies towards people of colour and especially our First Nations people in Australia. Please take the time out of your day to have a look through this document, share it with family, friends and communities that you are a part of and choose a few resources that you are going to look at yourself in order to get better educated. http://shorturl.at/benwL
13.01.2022 Are you furious about the recently proposed changes to higher Ed funding? Do you want to take a stand against this governments shameless attempts to create an American-style education system? Come along to the protest in Garema Place this Friday at 4:30pm! Please note that as of posting the organisers of this protest have made the event wheelchair accessible, but it may not be accessible to people who suffer from sensory overload or people who may be hard of hearing. It is unclear if there are places to sit along the route, and no quiet room has been provided as of publishing.
13.01.2022 If you’re as outraged as us about the recent announcements from the federal liberal government that arts degrees will double in cost under the proposed changes to higher ed funding then like this page and join the linked group to get involved in our campaign against these changes!! https://www.facebook.com/EANACT/
12.01.2022 CW: Police Brutality, Racism ... ANU Labor Left mourns the loss of George Floyd, an innocent black man murdered by police in the US. We also acknowledge the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and the countless other people of colour who have been murdered by the racist institution that is the police. The recent events in the US have proved what many of us have known for a long time; that police everywhere are a racist and white supremacist institution. Cops murdered George Floyd. Cops have fired rubber bullets and tear gas into crowds of protesters. Cops have rammed rioters with their cars in New York City. There’s no other way to say it. ACAB. During this incredibly difficult time it is also important to recognise that police brutality and deaths in custody are not a uniquely American problem. Our First Nations people have the highest rate of incarceration per capita in the world. There have been 425 First Nations deaths in custody, 40,000 First Nations children forcibly removed from to foster care. Our First Nations peoples face police brutality every day, and we should never forget that. When our turn comes to stand with for our First Nations people, we will not back down in the face of police brutality. We stand in full solidarity with the rioters in Minneapolis and all across the US. America was built on stolen land and on the labour of slaves. Black people have every right to burn down a country that they built for free. In the words of Martin Luther King Jr, ‘a riot is the language of the unheard’. [Image Descriptions - Image 1: Mural of George Floyd over the background of a sunflower. The words George Floyd are painted on either side of his face. In front of the mural are flowers and a person sitting on the ground holding a Black Lives Matter sign. Image 2: An image of an Instagram post with the words On May 25 2020, a Black man names George Floyd was brutally murdered by a white police officer in Minneapolis. His final words were ‘I can’t breathe.’ On 29 December 2015, a Dunghutti man named David Dungay was murdered by correctional officers in his cell at Long Bay Prison. His final words were ‘I can’t breathe.’ Image 3: A photo of a building burning behind protestors raising their fists in the Black Power Symbol. 09.01.2022 Get around the upcoming rally against Higher Education Fee Hikes. It has become clear that these changes to funding are just a way to disguise cuts to funding for higher education, and will affect all students, not just Arts students. That's why its so important to come together and protest to make our voices heard - we need to show the government that we will not accept these changes to higher ed funding. Looking forward to seeing you all next Saturday (18th July) ... Accessibility of this event is still to be confirmed, if you feel at all unwell on the day, please do not attend.
08.01.2022 Snap Action today 12pm at the Press Club, details in the event! We’ve just found out about a huge announcement coming today at midday from Dan Tehan, the education minister. Tehan is expected to announce widespread increases in humanities and law degrees. Humanities subjects could increase by over 100%! If you’re in Canberra today make sure you turn out to the press club and show the Education Minister that students won’t stand for education cuts!
07.01.2022 Whilst it’s hilarious to laugh at the Canberra Liberals and their antics, it’s important to remember that the Canberra Liberals are the most conservative branch of the Liberal party in Australia. Alistair Coe was the only leader of a state government or opposition to vote no in the marriage equality plebiscite. The Canberra Liberals want to reverse the ACT’s new and progressive cannabis laws. ... The Canberra Liberals were against the incredibly popular light rail. And their plan to tackle climate change is to plant more trees. Now more than ever we need to be mobilising to prevent this ultra-conservative party from taking government in the most progressive jurisdiction in Australia.
07.01.2022 Everyone get around this initiative from the NUS! We’re so close to blocking this bill from passing the senate next week, but we need your help to convince the last Senator, Stirling Griff, to vote against this legislation. Click the link below to send him an email saying why you think the bill should be blocked
04.01.2022 More disgusting announcements from Dan Tehan
03.01.2022 We love to see it
02.01.2022 We’re backing candidates that back unions! Go Bec!!
02.01.2022 Join us this Saturday in Garema Place to stand up against the Liberal Governments Fee Hikes! *This event will be wheelchair accessible and there is seating in Garema Place, however it is unclear if it will be suitable for people with auditory concerns. *
01.01.2022 Come along to Kambri at midday today to stand with staff against job cuts at ANU!
