19.01.2022 Ron Tauranac, the designer behind the Brabham and Ralt racing cars, lived to the grand age of 95. John Smailes tells a lovely story about how, in the year of hi...s death, Ron's last idea was to design a better walking frame with better stability, even though he already held the "lap record" for the walking track around his nursing home! It's in John's latest book titled "Speed Kings - Australian and New Zealander's quest to win the Indy 500; The world's greatest motor race. www.johnsmailes.com.au Pictures from the book #brabham #indy #indyblogger

14.01.2022 At a recent funeral, the funeral director brought out his lovely Daimler DS420. He bought it a few years ago from Mackay in Nth Queensland and drove it back to ...Sydney and said it goes like a race car and just as thirsty. Twin cam Jag motor 4.2, 250 bhp Redline on the tacho is 5000 rpm. There’s been a bit of publicity about The Crown on Netflix, this is the same model hearse used for Princess Diana’s funeral.

08.01.2022 I was testing a Hino 300. They sent it with some weight in the back to test it under load. The only problem is that the "Load" was firewood. In our neighbourh...ood that is like gold! I had to lock the vehicle away each night. In the reserve out the back, if a branch breaks off a tree it is collected before it hits the ground

06.01.2022 Most modern cars are competent and smart-looking. But I had an F-type Jag the other day. Went like the wind, handled with great precision, a delight to drive... BUT I just wanted to park it and stand outside looking at it. Beautiful with an exquisite balance in its looks. Even the opening of the boot (see video below) seemed to be a statement of aggression rather than just a function.

04.01.2022 What’s it like racing an old Monaro around the great Mt Panorama Circuit? Fred Brain was in the historic support races at the Bathurst 1000 in his 1969 Monaro. He tells us what it was like and we reprise a comment from the late great Peter Brock.

01.01.2022 Kia’s new Carnival Should we call it a GUV? One of Overdrive’s favourite vehicles is the Kia Carnival eight seater people mover. People movers have had a stod...gy image, a bit like a pair of sensible shoes, they do the job but not something you wanted to be seen in. To change that image, Kia, among other things, would like to call them a GUV! Kia has just launched their new fourth-generation model. The new carnival continues the significant improvements with a style that strives to be more SUV than a glorified van. The carnival has dominated the market with over 50% of sales in the category, but with COVID-19, 2020 saw people-mover sales halved. There are two engine choices, a powerful petrol and a solid diesel and plenty of comfort and safety features especially if you move to the more prestigious models. Pricing starts from just under $47,000 to nearly $59,000 plus on roads.
