16.01.2022 Watching the sun set over Frankston beach last night, I consider myself so lucky to live just a stone's throw from this gorgeous corner of the world! There is so much inspiration & beauty to be found in one's surrounds if we just take the time to appreciate the details and embrace the inevitable changes moment to moment. In this case the sun set at precisely 8.42pm, and taking the photo just a few minutes earlier or later would have given an entirely different (although undoubtedly still stunning) picture. 14.01.2022 Okay, so this post has nothing to do with copywriting and everything to do with being in the right place at the right time. Late last week, I was arriving home of an evening and reversing my car into my rather difficult allocated spot outside the front of my unit. Whilst reversing in the dark, I couldn't help but notice the light on in a neighbouring unit, where the owner had the security door open, casting a clear path to his lounge room. It was there that I saw this incredi...ble painting of none other than Amy Winehouse - and on a second glance, I happened to see that the painting was propped up on a dining room table, surrounded by jars and jars of paintbrushes. So I quickly parked my car, and felt compelled to knock on the door of my neighbour - who, in the six years that I've been living in my property, I'm embarrassed to admit that I have never said much more than 'hi' or 'bye' to when passing him in the driveway. As it turns out, his name is Brian, he is a 71 year old senior citizen, and he has an amazing talent for producing mixed media bespoke artworks such as this, with a recent focus on the infamous '27 Club'. Here he has used a mix of acrylic paint and online images from the time of Amy's death; paying homage to the artist's struggles with addiction but also her wistful side, as it includes a hand-written letter to her ex-husband at the time of his incarceration. My neighbour was going to list this piece on Gumtree for a mere $150, so needless to say, I offered him cash on the spot to take possession of the artwork - and I have also commissioned him to do a similar piece that focuses on the late, great Kurt Cobain. Moral of the story folks - get out there and talk to your neighbours! You never know what hidden talents abound, or what great connections await you. 07.01.2022 So here's the latest instalment on Brian, my 71 year old neighbour who I recently discovered has a hidden talent for producing these striking bespoke mixed media paintings of the infamous '27 Club'. I'd previously posted the painting of Amy Winehouse, and I have just picked up this customised piece on Kurt Cobain, complete with the Seattle skyline, Kurt's death certificate and one of my all-time favourite quotes, straight from the mouth of the late Nirvana frontman himself: "...Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are". Once again Brian has delivered with a mix of acrylic paints and adhesive printed elements, all overlaid with a clear setting varnish. I've just commissioned Brian to produce a third & final piece to round out my collection, and I cannot wait to see his personal interpretation of the incomparable Janis Joplin! I've also offered to help Brian set up his own Instagram page for his artwork, so that he can share his amazing talents with the world.
