Considerations Some individuals should avoid the back extension exercise. Those who have a herniated disc should avoid this exercise as it may increase inter-vertebral pressure. Individuals who have sensitive spinal nerves should also avoid this exercise unless otherwise advised by a doctor. If you are carrying an excessive amount of weight due to being prone to arching during this exercise, it may be better served by using an upright back extension machine (or alternative) until your back can handle the higher workload.
