21.01.2022 Minister for Veterans Affairs Darren Chester said Legacy Week was known for its trademark badges and was a simple way that Australians can support our ex-service personnel and their families, and say thank you. Every year since 1942, Legacy volunteers have fundraised across Australia for the families of veterans who stand by our service men and women both during and after their service, Mr Chester said. This year has been unprecedented in so many ways, and the coronavir...us crisis has heightened many of the pressures that our veterans and their families are experiencing. That is why it is more important than ever that we all do what we can to help organisations like Legacy support the families of veterans and I encourage Australians to consider buying a badge or supporting Legacy online. 20.01.2022 We don't know them all, but we owe them all. After 6 years, the war finally ended when Japan surrendered in August 1945. Australian ships had played a role in the push towards the Philippines and the Japanese home islands. Australian aircrew had fought in the air war over Germany while Australian infantry had continued mopping up campaigns in Borneo, New Britain, New Guinea, and on Bougainville. These men, and many more like them, are the contributing factors to the lives we ...lead today. They made sacrifice for people that they never met, and would never know. We owe them more than can be put into words, but at the very least a thank you. #VP #VJ #Victory #Pacific #Army #WW2 #WWII #war #secondwoldwar #historynerd #historic #military #collection #history #ww #soldier #militarylife #veteran #war #armedforces #OneInAMillion #OurVeterans #TYFYS #veteran #DiggersTribute #diggers #veterandiggers
20.01.2022 The Battle of Milne Bay was the Allies first defeat of Japanese forces on land during the Second World War. 1942 stands as one of the most significant years in Australias wartime history. As Australians fought in defence of our shores, there were major battles in Papua: along the Kokoda Track, at Milne Bay and at the Beacheads of Buna, Gona and, in early 1943, Sanananda. On the night of 2526 August 1942, a Japanese amphibious invasion force landed on the northern shore of ...Milne Bay at the eastern tip of Papua New Guinea. The aim was to secure a base from which to provide air and naval support for the overland attempt to take Port Moresby. The Japanese landing was opposed by Kittyhawk fighters of 75 and 76 Squadrons RAAF. For the next two days the Japanese, with tank support, gradually advanced towards the airstrips situated in the lowlands at the head of the bay. As they moved forward, the enemy soldiers were constantly harassed by the RAAF aircraft. The Battle of Milne Bay was hailed at the time as the first significant defeat of a Japanese force on land in the Second World War and an important morale booster for the Allies. https://hubs.ly/H0tYyJC0 #VP #VJ #Victory #Pacific #Army #WW2 #WWII #war #secondwoldwar #historynerd #historic #military #collection #history #ww #soldier #militarylife #veteran #war #armedforces #OurVeterans #TYFYS #veteran #DiggersTribute #diggers #veterandiggers #RAAF #Airfroce

11.01.2022 Passing the Torch from the Greatest Generation to the Next Talking to WWII veterans and thanking them for their service to our country, and perhaps recording their story, is a memorable experience for you and your family. Years from now, your children will still remember this once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a real hero and hearing the veterans first-person account of history. Comment and share this post to encourage everyone to chat to those WW2 veterans in their lives an...d pass their story on to the next generation. Here are some things you can do to preserve a legacy underwritten by the events of World War 2. 1. Talk to a family member who served in WWII. Tape or record his or her recollections. Collect images, artifacts, medals and store them away for the next generation. 2. Ask your friends and neighbors if they have family members who served and who might want to talk about it with your family or a small group of interested people. 3. Reach out to local veteran organisations. They may know of veterans willing to speak about their experience or suggest ways to volunteer to help veterans. 4. Inquire at your place of work, local clubs, social groups about friends or family members who may be WWII veterans. Ask them to capture and share the story 5. Remember those behind the front lines supporting from home. It wasnt just the men in uniforms who won the war. Millions of women worked behind the scenes in plants across the country and still have vivid memories of living with the trials of the Second World War. To assist in recording our veteran Digger stories and create a tangible legacy for future generations Military Shop has created a range of products entrenched in history to commemorate service and sacrifice. 07.01.2022 Our favourites to win the race - Galloping Jack! Appointed colonel of the 12th Light Horse Regiment, Australian Imperial Force, on 22 February 1916, Royston won the immediate affection and respect of his men, becoming a light horse legend at the battle of Romani on 4-5 August. In temporary command of the 2nd Light Horse Brigade, the 'massively built' 56-year-old Royston galloped around the battlefield with astounding energy and courage, reputedly riding fourteen horses to a s...tandstill. His nickname, 'Galloping Jack', would stick. Late in the first day's battle a bullet lodged in Royston's calf. Ordered by Major General (Sir) Harry Chauvel to have the wound treated, he galloped off before the dressing was completed, trailing strips of bandage. On the second day of battle Chauvel ordered him to hospital. Royston left within a few hours and the bullet stayed in his leg until his death. Next day the 1st L.H. Brigade was also put under his command for the Bir el Abd operation and on 9 August he took command of the 3rd L.H. Brigade. At the battle of Magdhaba in December he created another legend. Confronting several Turkish soldiers, he flourished his riding cane and ordered 'Hands up' in Bantu. The startled Turks dropped their rifles and surrendered. https://hubs.ly/H0z3b1M0 #melbournecup #millinery #military #collection #onlineshopping #hobby #follow #newcollection #collectors #armedforces #OurVeterans #TYFYS #veteran #DiggersTribute #diggers #veterandiggers
