25.01.2022 The origin of ANZAC Day in Queensland as told by the late Col Arthur Burke OAM (Retd) https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=-t-oAdeXOgY

25.01.2022 From the Australian War Memorial https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/blog/vp-day75 Seventy-five years ago, on 15 August 1945, Emperor Hirohito publicly announced Japan’s acceptance of the Allies’ terms and Japan’s surrender. Nazi Germany had surrendered to the Allies three months earlier. The Second World War was over.... Australian forces were engaged in campaigns across the Pacific in New Guinea, Bougainville, New Britain, Borneo, and in the Philippines and Australian prisoners of the Japanese were spread throughout Asia. While there were many contributors to Japan’s defeat, the dropping of atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945 brought the conflict to a sudden end. Most had expected the war against Japan to continue into 1946. In Australia, 15 August 1945 was gazetted as VP Day: Victory in the Pacific Day. But for now, Australians enjoyed what Prime Minister Chifley simply called this glorious moment. https://shop.anzacday.org.au/medallions

12.01.2022 On 15th August 2020, Australia will pause to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the end of WW2. Looking back to 1942, Australia for the first time was under threat of invasion from a foreign country. The Australian forces’ defeat of the Japanese Army on the Kokoda Track and successes at Milne Bay along the Northern Coast of New Guinea, ensured the safety of Australia. The war in the Pacific continued among the islands to the North and East of Papua New Guinea until the Japan...ese surrender in August 1945. We invite you to select a memento of Australia’s service in WW2. 07.01.2022 18th August from the Australian War Memorial https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/blog/vietnam-veterans-day Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated on 18 August every year. The day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. On that day, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the... small village of Long Tan. The Australians prevailed, but only after fighting in torrential rain for four hours. They were nearly overrun, but were saved by a timely ammunition resupply, accurate artillery fire from the nearby Australian base, and the arrival of reinforcements by armoured personnel carrier. Eighteen Australians lost their lives and 24 were wounded, the largest number of casualties in one operation since the Australian task force had arrived a few months earlier. After the battle the bodies of 245 enemy soldiers were found, but there was evidence that many more bodies had been carried away. On the third anniversary of Long Tan, 18 August 1969, a cross was raised on the site of the battle by the men of 6RAR. Veterans from the battle gathered at the cross to commemorate the fallen, and the day was commemorated by them as Long Tan Day from then on. Over time, all Vietnam veterans adopted the day as one to commemorate those who served and died in Vietnam. In 1987, following the very successful Welcome Home parade for Vietnam veterans in Sydney, Prime Minister Bob Hawke announced that Long Tan Day would be known as Vietnam Veterans Day. Since then, it has been commemorated every year as the day on which the service of all those men and women who served in Vietnam is remembered. https://shop.anzacday.org.au/index.php

02.01.2022 UPDATE: HER MAJESTY, THE QUEEN, HAS GIVEN HER APPROVAL The Australian Government announces the recommendation to Her Majesty, The Queen, the award of posthumous Victoria Cross to Ordinary Seaman Edward Teddy Sheean.... Sheean was a sailor in WWII who was killed after HMAS Armidale was attacked by Japanese warplanes in the Arafura Sea en route to Timor in 1942. Despite being told to abandon ship, Sheean, 18, was reported to have not left his post and continued to fire his anti-aircraft gun at enemy aircraft. His actions were credited with saving the lives of 49 crew.
