25.01.2022 Nigel Love was a man of firsts. He established an aerodrome at Mascot (today’s Sydney Airport) and was the first pilot to carry a commercial passenger between Sydney and Melbourne. Love’s contribution to the civil and military aviation industry in Australia is perhaps unsurpassed. What better way to honour our past and present flyers today, on International Civil Aviation Day, than to read Love’s incredible story on our website https://bit.ly/Nigel_Love #internationalcivilaviationday #civilaviation #australianhistory #greatwar #secondworldwar #veteran #anzacmemorial #collection #object #sydney #militaryaviation #commemoration #remembrance #memorial #museum #anzacs #australianflyingcorps #raaf #royalaustralianairforce
25.01.2022 Military service made us equal Harry Allie BEM (Kudjula and RAAF) This sentiment has been expressed by David Williams (Bundjalung), Roy ‘Zeke’ Mundine (Bundjalung) and many other veterans, members of the NSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Veterans Commemoration Coordinating Committee inspired to create an annual memorial service at the Anzac Memorial. Was it a similar hope that inspired the Second World War veteran Alexander Lavell (pictured) to volunteer for the wa...r in Korea? What we do know is that Lavell found a home in the army. His medals (image 2), now on display at the Anzac Memorial, illustrate service spanning four wars and a quarter of a century. Lavell enlisted, underage, in May 1941. 16 months later he was a sweating crew member frantically serving a 25-pounder gun/howitzer, one of hundreds, delivering the massive British barrage that opened the Battle of El Alamein. After North Africa he soldiered on in the Pacific but by mid-1946 found himself discharged and unemployed. Relisting in 1950, Lavell fought at the Battle of Kapyong in 1951, hunted Communist bandits in Malayan jungles from 1955 to ‘57 and served a tour with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam from 1966 to ‘67. #NAIDOCweek #NAIDOC #NAIDOC2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe #indigenous #indigenousX #firstnations #anzacmemorial #collection #museum #commemoration #secondworldwar #ww2 #militaryhistory #museum #lestweforget #veteran #remembrance #vietnamwar #malayanemergency #3RAR #AustralianArmy
25.01.2022 Today we pause to remember the 645-strong crew of HMAS lost in the Indian Ocean on the night of 19 November 1941 After its success in the Mediterranean, had returned to the relative peace and monotony of convoy escort duties between Australia and Singapore. Returning from one such cruise, encountered the German raider disguised as a Dutch merchantman. With surprise on its side, opened fire at close range. was doomed. The discovery of the wreck decades later showed that every Australian sailor had stayed at his post and fought the ship even as it slipped beneath the waves.

21.01.2022 Today is International Volunteer Day when we acknowledge the generous contribution of all our volunteers - from our brave firefighters in the bush to the amazing lifesavers on our beaches. The Anzac Memorial also remembers every man and woman who voluntarily served in the Great War. From a population of less than five million, approximately 416,000 men enlisted and over 60,000 never saw home again. More than 3000 female nurses also offered their services. During the Second Wo...rld War, volunteers again enlisted with the 2nd AIF, the RAN and the RAAF. In more recent times, Australian volunteers have contributed their time and skills to peacekeeping and humanitarian operations in areas of conflict and natural disaster. Lieutenant Jennifer Evans, a theatre nurse at Westmead Hospital spends her spare time as a volunteer nurse with the Royal Australian Navy Reserve. Evans earned her Humanitarian Service Medal as a member of the RAN team that deployed to Aceh after the devastating Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. In 2014 Jennifer was part of an international team of military medics deployed to Afghanistan. She wore this camouflage uniform under a sterile gown whilst working in the operating theatre of the NATO Role 3 hospital in Kandahar. #internationalvolunteerday #volunteers #anzacmemorial #peacekeeping #humanitarianoperations
15.01.2022 "102 years ago, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month the guns fell silent in France and Belgium, a silence heard around the world. The Great War of 1914-18 was over. Tragically war has flared around the globe many times since. On this hour, on this day, we pause to reflect and remember all those whose lives have been touched by war." Our Senior Historian and Curator, Brad Manera explains the significance and importance of Remembrance Day. (Video production by Vagrant Films)

13.01.2022 On 5 May 1915, the New Zealand Infantry Brigade and the 2nd Australian Infantry Brigade moved south from Anzac Cove to Cape Helles to assist in a second attack to take the small white town of Krithia. The attack, launched in broad daylight on the morning of 8 May by the Wellington, Canterbury and Auckland Infantry Battalions, failed. A second push was ordered late in the afternoon. This time, the 2nd Australian Brigade and the New Zealand Otago Infantry Battalionled forw...ard with a shout of Come on, Australians!advanced into a hail of bullets to within 400 metres of the Ottoman defensive lines. Unlike the dry and unforgiving terrain at the Anzac beachhead, this battleground was one of rich fields of green wheat and wide patches of open heath*. Ultimately, it would become the final resting place for 182 Australians and 120 New Zealanders killed in action. A further 874 Australians and 651 New Zealanders were wounded or went missing. None were taken prisoner. Krithia is listed as a battle honour in the Gallipoli niche of the Anzac Memorial’s Hall of Memory. 04.01.2022 It’s our 86th birthday! On the 24 November 1934, more than 100,000 people assembled in Hyde Park to witness the official opening of the Anzac Memorial. It was one of the largest public gatherings in Sydney since the Great War ended in 1918 and the Harbour Bridge opened two years before. It was a solemn and simple ceremony and from the western terrace, H.R.H. Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester gave a short speech in which he praised the sacrifice of the men and women who ha...d died during the war. The Archbishop of Sydney offered the prayer of dedication and after the Last Post was played, silence descended upon the park for a minute of private contemplation. The sounding of the Reveille and a resonant rendition of the National Anthem concluded the day’s formalities. This large, beautiful Wreath of Dedication, crafted out of silk poppies, was laid by Prince Henry to commemorate the fallen. It was kept for posterity by the Anzac Memorial and today hangs on the western wall in the Hall of Memory. #onthisdayinhistory #anzacmemorial #anniversary #86anniversary #itsourbirthday #lestweforget
04.01.2022 On 1 December, 78 years to the day after Teddy Sheean gave his life trying to save his shipmates, the Governor-General will present his family with the insignia... of the Victoria Cross for Australia. Teddy Sheean chose certain death over the chance of survival, to try and save his mates in the water. None of us can know what he was thinking or feeling but in this video, Brad Manera, the Senior Historian at the Anzac Memorial, talks about life on a ship like HMAS Armidale, the risks they faced and the bonds between shipmates.
