25.01.2022 Crop comparison of lettuce in regular treatments vs with wood vinegar Verdilife in the US have shared a series of trials where wood vinegar has produced great results. One farmer applied wood vinegar to lettuce with the ratio 1:600 during the seedling stage 3 times per week. He observed that the wood vinegar treated lettuce had grown 26% faster, healthier and denser than the controlled lettuce. Wood vinegar also helped the crops uptake and stimulates growth and improved abs...orption through the roots, strengthening the roots and leaves To check out some more results from trials they've shared jump on their website: https://verdilife.com/us-trials/ #woodvinegar #agriculture #sustainable #anzbig
25.01.2022 If you dig up ancient carbon up and pump it straight into the thin blue line around earth it’s going to eventually get to toxic levels. Closing the loop and converting new carbon into old and burying it in everything from soils to roads provides one solution in an economically viable way. #bioenergy #biochar #woodvinegar
24.01.2022 Conhur are developing a biochar activated fertiliser combined with dewatered sewerage sludge & bio digestate to improve water management. The DMax system allows for the recycling and beneficial reuse of materials from a variety of waste streams and in particular sludges from digesters and lagoons by separating the sands, grits and plastics from the final dewatered cake. It is proven to deliver an 80% reduction in waste to landfill volumes in applications at municipal waste wa...ter treatment works in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific To learn more about their technology, check out this short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch (video length: 3 mins) #biochar #watermanagement #sustainable
24.01.2022 A study included in our 2018 conference proceedings investigated the potential for using hydrochar from waste biomass materials for removing a toxic dye from wastewater, namely, congo red. Results revealed that functional properties of hydrochar are influenced by biomass type and hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) conditions. Moreover, hydrochar produced from rice straw biomass at 200 C HTC temperature exhibited the highest surface area and congo red removal efficiency was 82%... Therefore, hydrochar production form biomass could be a very useful technique to covert waste biomass for environmental applications. 24.01.2022 Biochar as a building material Two of biochar's key properties are its low thermal conductivity and its ability to absorb water up to 5 times its weight. These properties mean that biochar is just the right material for insulating buildings and regulating humidity. In combination with clay, but also with lime and cement mortar, biochar can be used as an additive for plaster or for bricks and concrete elements at a ratio of up to 80%. This blending creates inside walls wit...h excellent insulation and breathing properties, able to maintain humidity levels in a room at 45 70% in both summer and winter. 13.01.2022 Benefits of wood vinegar as a natural fertiliser The natural composition of wood vinegar makes it ideal for promoting plant growth and plant resilience overall in the following ways: - It stimulates composting and enhances the strength of the roots... - It aids in increasing microbiological population by regulating the nutrients in the soil. - Soaking seeds in wood vinegar enhances the strike rate of seed germination. As a result, more seeds tend to sprout. - Fruits and vegetables tend to taste better if the crops are fertilised with wood vinegar. - The combined application of biochar and wood vinegar improves the growth of specific bedding species (such as Scarlet sage and Melampodium). 10.01.2022 The Stockholm Biochar Project Part of Stockholm's Biochar Project was to improve the life of their urban trees given they were dieing. The trees had few roots and were lacking water and nurients. To combat this, the city developed structural soils with Biochar to not only improve the life of the urban trees but also as a stormwater management strategy. 09.01.2022 Did you know that when wood vinegar is diluted 20 times, it greatly increases the concentration of microbes? Bacilli with spores (including actinomyces) and many kinds of moulds grow rapidly as they feed on the nutrients in wood vinegar. Within a week of spraying wood vinegar on soil, the surface and inside of the soil are covered with white moulds. Some germs and useful microbes (antibacterial microbes) are resistant to acids, others are not. Spraying wood vinegar on soil g...enerally tends to raise the density of useful microbes such as bacilli and actinomyces. 07.01.2022 A great resource that can be found on USBI website is a presentation by Myles Gray which provides a technology overview of Biochar as a use for stormwater treatment The full presentation can be found here: https://biochar-us.org//presen/4.2.3%20Gray%2C%20Myles.pdf
07.01.2022 Sophia Hamblin Wang, Director of CO2 Value Australia, recently gave a great presentation on Mineral Carbonation at our 2020 conference. Mineral Carbonation is the reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) with basic minerals to form harmless solid carbonates, similar to antacids or baking soda. Mineral carbonation occurs in nature as the process of rock weathering by rainwater and proves to be a very sustainable process. #biochar #bioenergy #carbondrawdown #circulareconomy #environment #sustainability

06.01.2022 Ever wondered how Wood Vinegar is made? Wood vinegar is made by heating organic biomass material in an environment that is oxygen reduced. This leads to the materials thermal decomposition along with the release of gases. The exhaust smoke is then cooled into a liquid. This liquid is then separated, and refined into wood vinegar. Here's a great diagram by Biogreen to illistrate the process ... #woodvinegar #process #anzbig
