Unfortunately, this isn't the case everywhere. That's why we're a proud partner of the Lifebox Foundation - the world's only NGO devoted to safer surgery and anaesthesia in low-resource countries.

12.01.2022 From the The Geoffrey Kaye Museum of Anaesthetic History: Dr Mary Alice Blair attained a Bachelor of Science from Auckland University College in 1902. Although six women had already graduated from medicine in Aotearoa/New Zealand, she decided to undertake medical training at the London School of Medicine for Women. The 1914 Medical Directory shows Blair graduated in 1907 and followed up with MD in 1910.... Blair was appointed Honorary Anaesthetist at the Medical Mission Plaistow, which drew in patients from the Canning Town Women's Settlement. She joined the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service during WWI and left for Serbia in 1915. Blair organised a 100 bed hospital. During 1916 she was contacted as a civilian surgeon to the Royal Army Medical Corps. Winston Churchill had declared women were not for to take command and were not given rank. Mary Blair was #AlwaysReady to do what needed to be done. Find more great artefacts and stories at: https://www.geoffreykayemuseum.org.au/ #NAD20 #AlwaysReady #HistMed #WomenInMedicine
