On 16 October 2019 Premier Mark McGowan announced that the Graduate Stream of the SNMP will be extended to include vocational education and training (VET) graduates who complete a qualification in Western Australia... at Certificate III level or above, excluding trade occupations (unless approved for delivery to international students). The first invitation round to include VET graduates will be issued in December 2019. Other changes to the SNMP Graduate stream are: Studies in Higher Education, VET and/or English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) will all count towards the requirement to study for two years in Western Australia. Work experience and job offer requirements will also be reduced. Graduates will need to either demonstrate six months of work experience or a six month employment contract, but not both. Currently, international students need to have 12 months of work experience plus a job offer for 12 months. 14.01.2022 Biosecurity officers at Perth Airport have referred a serious biosecurity breach to Australian Border Force officials who have subsequently cancelled two passen...gers’ visitor visas. This is the fourth cancellation in under a month since new legislation was introduced to help strengthen Australia’s biosecurity stance. The passengers who arrived from Bangladesh, failed to declare live plants on their Incoming Passenger Card. The passengers declared rice but failed to mention the 21 live plants in their luggage. Live plants present a clear danger to our delicate ecosystem soil, insects and plant pathogens have the potential to cause serious damage to our native flora and fauna. Panama Disease Tropical Race 4, Xyella, and citrus canker are plant diseases that all have the capacity to change the landscape of Australian agriculture and horticulture. The passengers won’t be able to come back to Australia for three years. Returning Australians who do the same could face criminal prosecution or civil court action. They could be ordered to pay up to $420,000 and be sentenced up to 10 years in jail. When passengers bring in high risk items, this is what they’re risking.
