23.01.2022 The Great Barrier Marine Park - it is unique. It is the only seascape like this on the planet. "Our duty here is to come in as scientists and understand the lon...g-term history of the Great Barrier Reef over geological time: why it is here, how it got here. That gives us really important insights into its future." A look at some of the geological research and accomplishments happening on the #VisioningCoralSea expedition.

22.01.2022 #FactFriday Glomar Challenger, (pre the JR) was the first oceanographic drilling and coring vessel, active from 1968 to 1983. The Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) was the first of three international scientific drilling programs that have operated over more than 40 years. Glomar Challenger was given its name as a tribute to the accomplishments of the oceanographic survey vessel HMS Challenger. Glomar is a truncation of Global Marine. #IODP #DSDP #ANZIC #funfactfriday #GlomarChallenger #Scientificoceandrilling #earthscience #funfact #geologyrocks #marinescience #marinebiology #ECR #sedimentology #micropaleontology #paleomagnetists #petrology #petrophysics #microbiology #geophysicis #ilovescience #STEM

22.01.2022 The Aquatic Scientific Societies World Climate Statement has been released, supported by AMSA and 110 other societies representing over 80,000 scientists from a...ll continents. This is the largest number of scientific societies to ever contribute to a statement on climate change, and AMSA is proud to support it. We encourage our members and those interested in the marine environment to share this statement with your colleagues, stakeholders, and media channels so that its impact can be fully realised. https://climate.fisheries.org/world-climate-statement/

15.01.2022 "The mapping has completely exceeded our expectations." The second leg of the #EdgeGBR expedition was packed with discoveries and spectacular encounters. The di...scovery of the previously unknown 500 meter detached reef was an amazing chapter in our still developing conception of the seafloor. "All of the new mapping we have achieved on this expedition contributes to our understanding of the deep seascapes..." Check out the new video to hear the excitement of scientists and ROV pilots and learn about the research! See more

07.01.2022 #FossilFriday - These are Radiolaria, silica shells from microscopic marine plankton. They are about 45 million years old and come from the deep-sea limestones ...now exposed in Kaikoura and eastern Marlborough. These fossils evolved from the radiolarian survivors of the meteorite impact that killed the dinosaurs, and are very useful for dating rock formations. The scale is 50 microns (0.05 mm). Our dedicated scientists sift through sediment to find these tiny fossils. See more

02.01.2022 FREE Virtual GESSS Webinar: Promoting on Social Media!! Thu 10 September 12:30pm AEST, 12.00pm ACST (Adelaide), 10.30am AWST (Perth) As part of Virtual GESSS wh...ere students will be presenting their science during Earth Science week (October 11 - 17), the GSA is hosting a webinar about using social media to an Earth Scientists advantage. Register here: http://bit.ly/virtualgessswebinar1 The webinar will aim to answer some of these questions: What makes people follow you on social media? How important is it to have a social media presence? What if I get trolled? Why would anyone want to hear from me? We especially encourage potential GESSS and AESC participants to join as there will be lots of tips about how to promote your talks and posters through social media. Scientists are increasingly embracing social media in their professional lives. This webinar is an introduction to the popular social media platforms for science communicators and how to use them to your advantage. From hashtags to trolls, this webinar will introduce you to using social media to your advantage as an earth scientist to build your network, share your science and get noticed. Dr Verity Normington will be hosting this webinar using her experience as a 2019-2020 Superstar of STEM and the social media manager of the AGCC 2018 to guide you through how to use social media to your advantage. Verity is also an Executive Councillor for the GSA and the Chair of the ACT-Division. Verity has a keen interest using science communication to better explain geology to the public. This will be an interactive webinar so please come along with your questions and experiences of social media! Following your registration, you will be sent a link to attend the webinar in Zoom on 10 September. #geology #geologicalsocietyofaustralia #virtualgesss GSA Earth Sciences Student Symposium - Queensland GESSS NSW GSA Earth Sciences Student Symposium - Western Australia GSA Earth Science Student Symposium - Tasmania GSA Earth Sciences Student Symposium - South Australia GESSS ACT Division
