18.01.2022 Some of the ANZPAA team were fortunate enough to attend Business Chicks Presents: Grace Tame in Melbourne last week. Earlier this year, Grace was named Australian of the Year for her advocacy for survivors of sexual assault and her #LetHerSpeak campaign. Thanks to her extraordinary bravery and campaign, she won the right to speak out under her own name. Our team had the opportunity to listen and learn from Grace as a survivor of sexual assault, and the challenges she faces. T...he talk allowed the team to learn about breaking down stigma and was also an important experience to inform ANZPAA’s understanding of the critical work in the prevention of sexual assault. #ANZPAA #Police #letherspeak

15.01.2022 Today is the United Nations International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The purpose of today is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical, mental, and emotional abuse. Whether impacted by war, violence or abuse, every child has the right to feel safe.... Police can play an essential role in restoring a sense of security and safety to child victims of violence, abuse, and aggression. They can identify children who may be traumatised, working in partnership to get them the help and resources they need to heal and thrive. In 2020 ANZPAA launched the Australia New Zealand Policing Strategy to Prevent and Respond to the Abuse of Children and Young People. Developed by policing jurisdictional subject-matter experts and in consultation with stakeholders including the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, the strategy puts the child victim in centre place and advocates for a collaborative and compassionate response to victims, families, and communities. It represents a public commitment of Australian and New Zealand policing to prevent and respond to forms of child abuse. The full strategy can be found here: https://www.anzpaa.org.au/publications/general More information on how to protect children affected by conflict and the rights of children can be found here: https://www.un.org/en/observances/child-victim-day #ANZPAA #Police #UN #childprotection

08.01.2022 Police members routinely experience exposure to potentially traumatic events or the aftermath of traumatic events. Some of these events stay with members forever. Unfortunately, repeated exposure during police work means the risk of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in police is much greater than expected in the general population. Today, on PTSD Awareness Day, let’s continue the discussion around PTSD for first responders and help break down the stigma of asking for help.... We can also normalise techniques to improve mental health, such as practising mindfulness and checking in with each other. No one should feel alone in this, there is support and treatment, and recovery is possible. And if you are experiencing depression, anxiety or emotional distress, help is available. In New Zealand: Call 0800 LIFELINE (0800 543 354) or text HELP (4357) for free, 24/7, confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In Australia: Call 13 11 14 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or text 0477 13 11 14 noon to midnight. #ANZPAA #Police #ptsdawarenessday #Mentalheath #canyouseeptsd #ptsd

07.01.2022 This National Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Land on which we stand. We acknowledge the Bunurong Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation and pay our respects to Elders past and present. This theme for National Reconciliation Week is: More than a word. Reconciliation takes action. This year marks twenty years of Reconciliation Australia and almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process.... It is an important reminder that our direct actions and the work we do can contribute to a more equitable and just society. As an organisation, we commit to understanding indigenous cultures and peoples better and we acknowledge our deep respect for the First Nations People of Australia and the world’s longest surviving cultures and communities. #MoreThanAWord #NRW2021 #Reconciliation #TakeAction #ANZPAA #Police
