24.01.2022 We're ending the week with positive news. #ANZSA is proud to announce that the Johanna Sewell Sarcoma Research Grant was awarded to Dr James Blackburn from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research who will look to improve fusion gene detection and immune response assessment in #sarcoma patients. Read more below or from here https://sarcoma.org.au//anzsa-sarcoma-research-grant-dr-ja Fusion genes result from mis-repair of broken chromosomes and cause an estimated 30 per cent ...of all sarcoma cases. Their precise detection helps determine patient prognosis and informs appropriate treatment and care, thereby impacting overall mortality. To address limitations in current diagnostic techniques, Dr Blackburn’s research team has developed and published a novel sequencing-based fusion gene test for sarcomas and other solid cancers that simultaneously detects all fusions present in a patient sample. As many cancer-causing fusions are not currently treatable, Dr Blackburn’s team aims to advance their proven test design by additionally detecting the presence of immune cells within tumours, the sequencing of which will indicate patients who are potential candidates for immunotherapy. The combination of highly accurate fusion gene diagnosis and immune cell monitoring provided by this new test design will enhance knowledge of potential treatment options and improve outcomes for sarcoma patients. We thank Helen Sewell AM for her support and contributions. #SarcomaAwarenessMonth

22.01.2022 Excited to hear that A/Prof Evan Ingley will be speaking at the Rotary breakfast meeting (WA) on his research project that was supported by Kicking Goals For Xav Sarcoma Research Grant and ANZSA. Our WA friends, please join if you're able to! More details in the image. #sarcoma #cancer

21.01.2022 You asked, and we've listened. We're happy to launch Sarcoma Stories on our website. It'll feature stories from sarcoma survivors, parents, carers and clinicians. To kick things off, we're featuring Karen Lurati's story. Karen was diagnosed with liposarcoma (cancer that starts in fat cells). Three years later, she remains cancer-free and feels ready to share her story, but admits the emotional recovery has taken a lot longer than the physical. Read more about her story... #S...arcomaAwarenessMonth #sarcoma #anzsa Thank you, Karen, for sharing your story! https://www.sarcoma.org.au/sarcoma-stor/karen-luratis-story

16.01.2022 Shoutout to an absolute legend, Lucy, who raised over $6.7k from her 'shave' event to support her mom who's diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma. ANZSA Director, A/Prof Peter Steadman was there to thank the organisers on behalf of ANZSA. #SarcomaAwarenessMonth #sarcoma

15.01.2022 "In terms of the next advances for sarcoma, I don’t think it will be one major breakthrough that will solve everything, but I think we will see a series of incremental advances that will make an overall difference things like better supportive care, new molecules and better combination therapies." Dr Susie Bae. In conjunction with National Science Week, Dr Susie Bae shares her insights about her work and how clinical trials are crucial to improving sarcoma diagnosis and treatment. 14.01.2022 We're proud to announce that the Xavier Krikori Sarcoma Research Grant was awarded to Dr Rachael Terry from the Children’s Cancer Institute who will investigate new immunotherapy strategies for children with rhabdomyosarcoma. You can read more below or here https://sarcoma.org.au//anzsa-sarcoma-research-grant---dr- Dr Terry will be working together with researchers in the ZERO Childhood Cancer Personalised Medicine Program at Children’s Cancer Institute and Sydney Children...’s Hospital, Randwick, and collaborators at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) are the most common soft tissue cancer that occurs in children and are the cause of around five per cent of all childhood cancers. RMS can be divided into two main groups based on their molecular features fusion-positive RMS (FP-RMS) and fusion-negative RMS (FN-RMS). Children diagnosed with FN-RMS generally have a better chance of survival than those with FP-RMS. However, the outcomes for a patient with either FP-RMS or FN-RMS are extremely poor once the cancer has spread to other parts of the body such as lung or liver, with less than 30 per cent chance of survival. Unfortunately, there has been little progress towards new therapies for these patients in recent years. Having said that, immunotherapies such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, which activate a patient’s own immune system to target and kill cancer cells, are starting to show some promising results in childhood cancer and could be used to treat sarcomas. However, only a handful of trials have tested immune checkpoint inhibitors in children with sarcomas such as RMS. So far, these inhibitors as single treatments have generally not been very effective. Dr Terry and her research team are proposing that treating children with a combination of inhibitors will be far more effective against sarcomas such as RMS than single therapy. With the Xavier Krikori Sarcoma Research Grant, Dr Terry’s research will determine which immunotherapy combinations are optional for treating both FP-RMS and FN-RMS. To better understand how to treat RMS most effectively, Dr Terry will intensively investigate the immune profiles of RMS, using samples from sarcoma patients enrolled in the ZERO Childhood Cancer Clinical Trial. Pre-clinical testing of these combinations in mouse models will provide the data needed to apply for additional funding to expand this program to test other immunotherapy combinations in RMS. They also plan to incorporate other sarcomas such as osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma in future research, to improve survival and quality of life for more children with sarcoma. We thank Kicking Goals For Xav for their support and contributions.
