25.01.2022 Royal commissions can significantly shape the direction of public policy even without the power to make binding recommendations - but they can also miss opportunities to influence. The latest Research Brief from The Bridge, ANZSOG’s research translation project, explores how royal commissions exert policy influence. Using royal commissions into Aboriginal land rights in the Northern Territory, institutional responses to child sex abuse and the 2009 Victorian bushfires as examples, it shows how they can have a powerful and lasting effect.

23.01.2022 By the time he joined the Department of Education & Early Childhood Development in Victoria in 2009, Paul Linossier had extensive leadership experience in the not-for-profit sector. But he thought there was much he could learn from, and contribute to, the public service. An ANZSOG Executive Master of Public Administration helped him to make the transition by giving him a strategic understanding of the public sector and helping him build a new network. Government funding of n...ot-for-profits is significant so understanding how government works, how policy is developed and how major systemwide change programs are initiated and led was going to improve my capability, he says. An EMPA taught me that many parts are required to realise the value the community is seeking and the value is not just a fiscal value it’s being able to improve lives and opportunities and strengthen community resilience.

This includes representation of Indigenous people at all levels of the public sector. These changes will take time, but at ANZSOG we hope our small contribution can help chart the way to a future where the many Australian Indigenous achievements are celebrated all-year-round.
