25.01.2022 UPDATE: AOPA AUSTRALIA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2020 Valued Members, Unfortunately, as a result of COVID-19 border restrictions, stay-at-home requirements, limits on public gatherings, along with individual business OH&S limitations, we have been unable to hold our AGM during the normal May to June period of 2020, leaving no choice but to defer to a time when restrictions are lifted.... I am pleased to report that the association has now received it's Audited Financial Accounts, which will be distributed to members in the coming days. The Audited Financial Accounts, along with Director Nomination Forms and the Notice of Annual General Meeting will be available to members through the online AOPA Australia members portal - an email confirming this will be distributed to members. Given that we are a national membership, it is important that members from all states and territories of Australia be able to travel to attend and participate. We are closely monitoring the border restrictions and will immediately announce an AGM date when they open. AOPA Australia will be hosting our 2020 Annual General Meeting from our new facilities at YSBK Bankstown Airport, with Member Drinks and a casual BBQ Dinner and presentation. Queensland Senator and Chair of the Senate Rural Regional Affairs Transport Committee (RRAT), Susan McDonald, has tentatively confirmed as our Guest Speaker. On behalf of our members, we thank Senator McDonald for the opportunity. We warmly invite our members attendance and participation, it will be a great opportunity to learn more about our new facilities and our recent achievements, along with meeting our Board and Management Team. Also celebrating - hopefully - the back of COVID-19 and an extremely difficult year in Australian aviation. TO REGISTER YOUR ATTENDANCE Please contact AOPA Australia Administration Manager on; (02) 9791 9099 - Available 9:30am to 3pm Mon, Tues & Thur Yours sincerely, BENJAMIN MORGAN Chief Executive Officer - AOPA Australia 2 Cirrus Place, Bankstown Airport NSW 2200, Australia. 23.01.2022 ORANGE AIRPORT LEASEHOLDERS CALL ON AOPA AUSTRALIA FOR ASSISTANCE, PUSHING BACK ON EXCESSIVE COUNCIL LEASEHOLD RATES Aviation property leaseholders at Orange Airport in New South Wales have called on the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Australia, seeking assistance in pushing back on excessive leasehold rates, which are unsustainable. Leaseholders have reported that Council have imposed lease-rates that are upwards of four (4) times the value of other airports in th...e region, arguing that Orange Airport has become one of the most expensive regional airports in the State for general aviation businesses. "Excessive and unsustainable airport leasehold rates only serve to damage local aviation businesses, they drive job losses for the region, they encourage aviation users to avoid using the airport and deny local cafes, restaurants, motels, clubs and pubs the invaluable contribution and investment that general aviation trade and tourism generates. "AOPA Australia is seeking a meeting with the Orange City Council to raise concerns with the reports received from our members and local airport leaseholders, seeking the support of Council in providing more competitive leasehold rates to ensure the future of general aviation at the airport. "Orange Regional Airport is an important gateway for New South Wales, delivering essential tourism and trade, along with securing thousands of jobs for the region. It is essential that the Airport be competitive to ensure the future of aviation at Orange. "The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply impacted Australia's aviation industry. A strong working partnership between regional councils and airport operators is needed with the aviation business community to ensure recovery is achieved. "I am looking forward to meeting with Council at the earliest." BENJAMIN MORGAN Chief Executive Officer - AOPA Australia Mobile: 0415 577 724 NOT A MEMBER? WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! 20.01.2022 AOPA AUSTRALIA RESPONSE TO AIRSERVICES AUSTRALIA PROPOSAL TO LOWER CLASS-E AIRSPACE TO 1,500' AGL ON EAST COAST http://aopa.com.au//AOPA-Australia-Response-to-Airservices AOPA Australia does NOT support the Airservices Australia proposal and views it as rushed, cautioning that if adopted will create unintended significant risks to aviation safety. ... This proposal should not proceed. AOPA Australia recommends that the proposal be withdrawn, pending; 1. a rigorous consultative review of the Safety Case used by Airservices Australia to support the proposed changes to determine if the genuine risks (not those perceived) to aviation safety require such a significant and major change to Australian airspace; 2. that if a change is necessary, a review of what airspace model would be most appropriate for Australia, taking into full consideration the adoption of the US airspace system, which currently provides better safety outcomes; 3. a full assessment and review of the costs to industry and community; 4. a full assessment and review of the costs to Airservices Australia to implement any proposed change. The review should be conducted through a broad stakeholder panel, inclusive of all industry associations, representative bodies and self-administrations, along with CASA and Departmental representatives, required to provide a recommendation to both Airservices Australia and the Minister should any change be required. 07.01.2022 NEW AIRPORT FEES & CHARGES - COOTAMUNDRA/GUNDAGAI AOPA Australia will today meet with representatives from the Cootamundra/Gundagai Regional Council at 3:30pm, advocating on behalf of our members and the broader general aviation community, opposing the introduction of new airport fees and charges that will undoubtedly negatively impact on local businesses. We are encouraging councils across Australia to take a fresh look at the value local community airports add to regional t...ownships and communities, though general aviation. Local community airports provide the same essential gateway and access as highways and roads. General aviation brings people, investment and opportunity, helping keep local business alive and flourishing. Without any doubt, a toll-bridge at the entrance to all roads into the Cootamundra/Gundagai region would have devastating negative impacts on local tourism, business, trade and employment. Post COVID-19, regional townships can help reinvigorate their regions by harnessing local community airports and working with the aviation industry. AOPA Australia understands that Council has initiated a 3 month trail with AVDATA at Cootamundra Airport. Our experiences with other airport regional locations has shown that after AVDATA takes its services fees and charges, Council is left with little to no income. There is no benefit to introducing landing fees and charges, simply to provide AVDATA with an income. The region is better served by Council forming a strong working partnership with the industry aviation associations and bodies, seeking to harness stronger airport use and investment within the local community. I am looking forward to meeting with Council today and will report back to members and industry on the meeting progress. Regards, BENAJMIN MORGAN AOPA Australia CEO AIRCRAFT OWNERS & PILOTS - HAVE YOUR SAY I invite our members and industry supporters to submit a comment below, detailing your perspective as an aircraft owner and/or pilot - addressing the issue of the introduction of new airport fees and charges within the Cootamundra/Gundagai region. 05.01.2022 MERIMBULA AIRPORT USERS CALL ON AOPA AUSTRALIA FOR ADVOCACY ASSISTANCE https://aopa.com.au/merimbula-airport-users-call-on-aopa-a/ Aircraft owners and pilots have reached out to AOPA Australia seeking advocacy support and assistance regarding concerns at Merimbula Airport, managed by the Bega Valley Shire Council. Local aviators and airport users have highlighted;... 1. That the Merimbula Airport Advisory Committee was disbanded by the Council over 4 years ago, leaving no formal consultative processes between Council and airport users; 2. That Council has introduced requirements for aircraft based at Merimbula Airport to carry excessive Public Liability Insurance coverage, which has driven up the costs of insurance premiums to unsustainable levels. That Council does not require itinerant aircraft visiting the airport to carry the higher levels of Public Liability insurance, directly disadvantaging and discriminating local aircraft owners; 3. That general aviation VH-registered aircraft are subject to airport use fees and charges, whilst RAAus registered aircraft are not levied; 4. That Council’s approach to aircraft parking charges and arrangements have resulted in owners leaving Merimbula, that this policy approach is damaging the viability of the aviation businesses at the airport. AOPA Australia is genuinely concerned with what we are hearing from local airport users at Merimbula Airport and believes it is timely for a broad review of Council’s airport management policies. Our association has invited local airport users to participate in an initial meeting, which we will host via Zoom video conference, seeking to fully understand the local concerns at the airport. "Merimbula Airport is a vital community asset, that provides a invaluable gateway for tourism, business and trade, emergency services and more. Unnecessary fees and charges, drive away opportunity and investment, which damages local business and employment. Following this meeting, AOPA Australia will seek a meeting with the Bega Valley Shire Council to further discuss the issues raised and to encourage a broad airport management policy review. , AOPA Australia CEO, Mr Benjamin Morgan. 01.01.2022 CASA AVIATION COMMUNITY SURVEY SUSPENDED! It has been reported today that the Civil Aviation Safety Authority has suspended their 'Aviation Community' survey, following a surge in submissions from across the aviation industry, following a call from AOPA Australia for industry to participate. SHARE THIS VIDEO!... Touted by CASA as an independent survey that sought ‘frank’ views and opinions from the ‘aviation community’, the now suspended survey appears to confirm that CASA are only interested in the answers they want, not those they need. The CASA survey is reported to have identified 14 stakeholder groups, with just 6,600 survey respondents emailed, claiming that the recipients were selected by an electronic script. CASA have not published a breakdown of the number of survey respondents per stakeholder group. Based on averages, 6,600 recipients across 14 Stakeholder groups produces a sample size of just 471 per group. CASA STAKEHOLDER GROUPS TARGETED - Pilot Licence Holders - RPAS Operators - Remote Pilot Licence Holders - Maintenance Licence Holders - Registered Aircraft Operators (Registrations) - Air Traffic Control (ATC) Licence Holders - Air Operators Certificate (AOC) Holders - Maintenance Organisations - Flight Training and Simulation Organisations - Aerodromes - Delegates - Dangerous Goods Training Organisations - Design and Manufacturing Organisations - Maintenance Training Organisation See report from AOPA Australia last week: https://aopa.com.au/pulling-the-wool-casa-survey-con-job-u/ AOPA Australia CEO, Mr Benjamin Morgan, provides comment.
