WARNING Batteries must NEVER be discarded in your kerbside bins Fires caused by batteries is a rapidly growing problem in collection trucks and at recycling centres. Last week, one of our recycling trucks caught fire, most likely due to a contaminant such as a lithium battery being thrown away in a recycling bin. The truck ha...d already collected the contents of 565 recycling bins which had to be temporarily dumped at the Willunga Oval, so that the fire could be extinguished. The risk of spot fires from flyaway material was also a concern for the firefighters on this unusually hot and windy Spring day. Thankfully, due to prompt action, the fire was contained, no one was harmed and the truck can be repaired. However, the estimated cost of the incident is $15,000. As a result of the fire, all of the recycling resources ended up in landfill.
