21.01.2022 Under the influence - If the past 12 months has taught us anything, it’s that coming to work when feeling sick puts others at risk. We have responsibility for our own health and the safety of those around us. But what about coming to work under the influence of drugs? Whether it’s the city centres, urban fringes, regional areas or remote Australia, drugs are being used in our communities. And what goes on in the community can be brought to your organisation’s doorstep. The Na...tional Drug Strategy Household Survey (2019) found around 3.4 million Australians reported using illicit drugs in the previous yearmost commonly cannabis, followed by ecstasy, misused pharmaceuticals and cocaine. Wastewater analysis by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission in 2020 found methylamphetamine to be the illicit drug most used by Australians, consuming an estimated 11.1 tonnes along with 5.6 tonnes of cocaine, 2.6 tonnes of MDMA and 1 tonne of heroin. This does have unfortunate implications for workplaces. Keep Reading; https://buff.ly/39P45Sj

19.01.2022 Join APAC at the 20th International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety Conference (ICADTS) on 25 to 28 August 2013 at Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, Brisbane, Australia. During the conference we will publish a paper regarding a controlled study of THC analysis using the BIOSENS system. The paper discusses : BIOSENS uses a dedicated Oral Mucus Collector, OMC, that draws both Oral Fluid and Mucus... Overal sample & analysis time with BIOSENS is two minutes rather than up to 10 minutes with conventional On Site Saliva tests (OFD). The detection time can be prolonged as BIOSENS analysis Mucus and Saliva, compared to OFD that analyses saliva only. There is a high correlation in between BIOSENS screening and oral fluid laboratory confirmation analysis which minimises the risk for False Alarms. In addition to the BIOSENS system, we will also display our range of urine cups for on site analysis as well as confirmation services. If you want to know more send us an email [email protected] More information regarding ICADTS can be found at the following website : www.t2013.com

11.01.2022 A few clients have asked us how to use the APAC urine screening cup. The instructions for usage, IFU, can be quite challenging to read, so hopefully this video clip will assist you. A few things to remember: Read the temperature strip as soon as there is urine in the cup. The temperature should be between 32 38 degrees Celsius.... Start the timer and read the results after five minutes but before 10 minutes All detection strips MUST have a visible Control line. This indicates that the strip is working. Below the C-line is the Test line. Absence of a T-line is a presumptive-positive/non-negative. Presence of a T-line is a Negative. We don’t say that a test is positive before it has been confirmed by a Toxicology laboratory. It does not matter how faint the T-line is it is still a negative. Use the adulterant score card to read whether the adulterant check is within normal limits. Out of limit readings, indicate that the sample is not a real specimen. If so, you should record this in the chain of custody documentation and carry out a new test. If the second test still is out of the normal boundaries, you should indicate this in the chain of custody documentation and send the specimen for confirmatory analysis. See more

05.01.2022 As Employers, we must ensure the health and welfare of all staff members. For example it is the employers duty to provide for a safe workplace environment, which is free of risks to health. In addition to workers, this also include health and safety for contractors and clients. It goes without saying that Drug related problems and alcohol can occur in any workplace. Estimates of the cost of injuries, absenteeism, lost production, workers compensation and rehabilitation servi...ces, arising from the misuse of alcohol and other drugs in the workplace vary in the current research data available. Furthermore, the abuse of alcohol and other drugs may damage physical and mental health (Source Safework NSW). Many factors have been put forward as possibly contributing to the misuse of alcohol and other drugs including: grief family and relationship problems interpersonal conflict health concerns gambling financial problems loss of control and lack of participation in any decision making process harassment, bullying or victimisation long and/or irregular working hours tight deadlines and unrealistic performance targets high risk of personal injury or illness at work discrimination or prejudice corporate entertaining poor job design or hazardous work processes history of substance abuse The OHS regulation requires that hazards are identified and action taken to systematically eliminate (or if elimination is not practicable, to control) risks arising from them. One important action to minimise risks is - Drug Testing. With a correct set up Drug Testing policy, the employer will not only detect current abuse, you can also monitor long term misusage. Other helpful aspect of drug testing is that increased safety, lower work related accidents and reduced absenteeism lead to better productivity. Keep Reading; https://buff.ly/2PItDKb

03.01.2022 What are the financial impacts of drugs and alcohol at work? Whether you work in an office or on an oil rig, employers have a duty of care to provide a safe workplace environment. But when an employee is impaired by drugs and alcohol, the health, safety and financial consequences can be devastating. In many industries, such as road and rail transport, maritime and mining occupations, the law provides a legal blood alcohol level and prohibits workers from being affected by dru...gs of any kind (prescription or illicit). Other companies have their own policies about alcohol and illicit substances. This is important when a worker uses heavy machinery or is in danger of injuring or killing themselves or another person. In industries without legislation, the impacts of drugs and alcohol in a workplace can be tricky to manage. However, if a person is under the influence, it’s bound to affect the way they do their job, no matter what it is. This is almost certainly going to have consequences for your business bottom line. Here we look at some of the financial impacts of drugs and alcohol at work. Keep Reading; https://buff.ly/2WvmzEd

01.01.2022 GHB 101 - Occurring naturally in the body, gamma-hydroxybutyric acid was first synthesized in a lab in the 1960s. Although its application in medicine has always been limited, GHB has had various recreational uses. In the 1980s, health food stores marketed the compound as a dietary supplement. Then, in the ’90s, the drug found its way into American nightlife. In small doses, GHB produces feelings of relaxation and confusion and heightens sexual arousal, lending to its allure ...as a party drug. It can also cause amnesia and hallucinations. While not particularly addictive, the drug has a steep dose-response relationship, meaning the difference between experiencing euphoria and losing consciousness is a matter of a few drops. It is this quality of GHB that gives it the nickname the date-rape drug. Overdoses can result in coma and respiratory arrest, which to an unaccustomed observer may appear as if the affected person has only fallen asleep. Get the Facts; https://buff.ly/31OZr2o
