25.01.2022 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Apace WA has decided to adopt a zero-contact policy to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus. As a result of this policy a decision has been made to close our site to the public. Retail Orders can still be placed by emailing us at [email protected] . Once your order has been received, we will confirm your species selection and contact you to organise payment and collection.

25.01.2022 ** PLEASE NOTE ONLY FORESTRY TUBES REMAINING** We're going just a little bit potty here at APACE right now and need to urgently dispose of a massive amount of pots in differing sizes, styles and colours. Recyling, re-using or even re-inventing is what it's all about of course and we'd be keen to hear from those of you who might be able to take some of our excess in larger quantities. And the best part is - they're FREE ! Contact us on 08 9336 1262 or by email to [email protected]. You can even turn up and we'll help fill your car. Wonder if there's a Guinness World Record for the number of pots in a car ? See more

25.01.2022 It might be perfect planting weather, but if you're planning on coming to APACE today to grab some of our quality WA natives, you'd best be in your canoe wearing a life-jacket (don't forget the EPIRB either ....) Yes, APACE is flooded IN ! Ah, the joys of a riverside living :)

24.01.2022 After completing Conservation & Land Management studies at TAFE, Will joined APACE as part of our traineeship program, made possible by the generous donation of an APACE patron. From 10,000-plant regeneration projects to seed propagation and retail prep, Will is almost halfway through the two-year traineeship. Will explains working with nature is more than a job. The benefits of giving back to the Earth works both ways!

23.01.2022 Thanks to everyone for their patience and understanding as we continue to work towards our much modified May Subsidy Scheme for 2020 (thanks Covid-19 NOT !). Unfortunately there has been some confusion over dates and when to pick your Plant Packs up. A lot of this comes down to the Eventbrite ticketing system which we have no control over. Hopefully the attached image will help to show that; - The date range in the middle of your ticket is simply the date range for the curren...t batch of Eventbrite tickets. These are NOT THE DATES for you to pick up your plant packs. - The date at the bottom of the ticket is the date upon which you purchased your ticket. Please do not turn up at APACE to collect your Plant Pack on any of these dates ! ALL ticket holders WILL be contacted and allocated a date / time for Plant Pack collection IN MAY. Stay tuned and thanks again as we continue to press forward in these difficult times. See more

22.01.2022 With our retail section OPEN once again (and busier than ever too !), we thought we'd share with you some of the rather special plants we have available. We are one of the few outlets in Perth actively growing Quandongs (Santalum acuminatum) and have more than a few seedlings available at $30.00 each. Our resident Quandong expert gets a bit obsessive on the subject, but they are amazing, the fruit is full of Vitamin C, anti-oxidants etc, etc. Just remember that they are a hemi-parasitic species, so a range of other natives are needed in their immediate vicinity for best results. Ask our helpful staff when you come in, as we keep our Quandongs for special requests :)

22.01.2022 The rain and lower temps are coming (trust us :)) this weekend, so here below is a BIG selected list of some low-growing species we currently have sitting in our retail section looking healthy and ready to go. These are all suitable for coastal to near coastal gardens. Just remember our 4-STEP ORDERING PROCESS thanks to that nasty little virus Step 1 browse our website (https://apacewa.org.au/) or otherwise research the local WA native species you want. Step 2 email us wi...th your request; [email protected] Step 3 we will return your email with confirmation and / or substitutes. We will also advise payment method and final cost via email. (NOTE, electronic payment only. Strictly NO cash) Step 4 arrange to pick up your order at the gate. Allocasuarina humilis ............Kennedia prostrata Atriplex cinereal.....................Leucophyta brownii Bossiaea eriocarpa................Logania vaginalis Calothamnus lateralis........Melaleuca systena Calothamnus villosus...............Olearia axillaris Conostylis candicans............Pattersonia occidentalis Dodenea aptera................Rhagodia baccata Enchylaena tomentosa............Scaevola thesioides Eremophila glabra.........Scaevola crassifolia Ficinia nodosa...................Westringia dampieri Frankenia pauciflora Grevillea crithmifolia (groundcover) Guichenotia ledifolia Guichenotia macrantha Hardenbergia comptoniana

21.01.2022 So you think APACE is just a native nursery ? Fact is, APACE offers a full suite of environmental and land-care services, from consultation through to landscape design, site preparation, weed control, planting, post-planting maintenance, native seed collecting, provenance seed growing and a native nursery ! Our crew members have been flat out over the past few months at various sites for clients ranging from Local Government to friends off community groups and more. All of this work is seasonally driven, so as the planting season begins to wind down, we will start to focus on native seed collecting over the summer months.

21.01.2022 APACE grown water wise and hardy local native plants are a fantastic way to spruce up your garden areas and the Fremantle Prison have recently done just that. The soil and geology around Fremantle Prison is typical coastal limestone and although many might think its impossible to plant in such conditions, APACE came up with a range of mainly local species that are perfectly adapted. Templetonia retusa, Acacia truncata, Eremophila glabra subsp. albicans, Guichenotia ledifolia, Logania vaginalis and more were included. If youve got an area that needs a bit of a face-lift, but which has proven difficult to work with in the past, give APACE a call or drop us an email. One of our consultants will work with you to select the right plants for the right area.

19.01.2022 Good morning from Apace.

18.01.2022 Heres a few species that are in flower in our Apace gardens at the moment. Dont you just love this time of year!

18.01.2022 Well it looks like the Easter Bilby has been through the nursery here at APACE ! So an opportune time for us to wish you all a safe, happy and Covid-free Easter. And may we thank you for your continued patience as we work through systems and procedures to ensure you can still acquire quality WA native plants and as we gear up for the subsidy scheme. From Team APACE to you and yours - Happy Easter :)

15.01.2022 Often heard but not seen, our resident motorbike frogs (ranoidea moorei) wear several different hats (& not just a top hat ). Kermit's role spans wetland monitoring (although he can live without water for some time) & pest control (he was reluctant to disclose his methods). His favourite plant is juncus subsecundus, aka the finger rush, common to wetlands along the Darling Scarp. Kermit (& his many, many progeny) form an important part of the APACE community & southwest WA, in which they are endemic.

13.01.2022 Swan River Daisy (Brachyscome iberidifolia) and all the nursery plants are loving a spot of sun at APACE this morning... the next few days are looking like great weather for gardening - enjoy!

Today he is readying forestry tubes for reuse, an integral part of our efforts to reduce plastic waste. Help us close the waste loop by returning your used pots. Thanks for all you do, Shane!

09.01.2022 Visiting APACE these school holidays? Here are some kid-friendly suggestions: - pick up a native seed pack for a holiday project - are there any frogs in our pond? - bring some snacks & enjoy the serenity at the hidden cove (you might even spot a seahorse if youre lucky!)... See you at APACE!

08.01.2022 This weekend is shaping up to be simply perfect for planting, with a forecast max of 25 degrees both days and perhaps a little drizzle. Not surprisingly though, a certain little Virus means weve had to make a few adjustments to how we do business, but we are still operating and growing lots of quality WA natives. So heres how it works. Step 1 browse our website (https://apacewa.org.au/) or research the local WA native species you want. Step 2 email us with your request...; [email protected] Step 3 we will return your email with confirmation and / or substitutes. We will also advise payment method and final cost via email. (NOTE, electronic payment only. Strictly NO cash) Step 4 arrange to pick up your order at the gate. Getting some quality WA native plants into your garden now is also terrific therapy in these troubled times when we are being encouraged to stay home. See more

08.01.2022 QUANDONGS FOR SALE ! Undoubtedly the most famous of Bush Tucker species, Quandongs (Santalum acuminatum) are something of an icon and APACE now has a limited number of mature seedlings available with more to come. Please remember that Quandongs are hemi parasitic, so they rely on other native species upon which they host (without causing any harm of course). Quandong seedlings do best if planted into a garden (or verge) that already has a little native vegetation system estab...lished never rely on a single host. Our Quandong seedlings are priced at $30 each and weve even put together an info page that is attached. Please dont forget that our ordering is all on-line at the present time, so either call or email us if you think you can give a Quandong a happy forever home :) 9336 1262 [email protected] See more

07.01.2022 It's easy sometimes to feel worn out (and worn down !) working in and for the environment. But then Mother Nature turns around and says THANK YOU in the most amazing ways. Cheers to Charlie Nicholson who sent us this photo of a bunch of Carnabys enjoying an APACE designed and planted native verge garden in South Perth. Job done :)

06.01.2022 You can't beat a happy bunch of volunteers and here at APACE we have some of the best. Posers ...... :)

06.01.2022 A background in horticulture has seen Renee's career span Kings Park, the Agriculture Department, indigenous organisations and more both here and in Sydney. An APACE veteran of 12 years, Renee specialises in cultivating the precious seedlings sold in our nursery. Inspired by our southern forests, her plant pick is the majestic tuart (e.gomphocephala). As a mum of two, she explains such a climb-able, gnarly tree is a must for any urban environment!

05.01.2022 A love for WA's endemic species drew Kaj to APACE where he now works in our nursery. Kaj has had success growing natives in pots, however admits they generally prefer to have their feet in the ground. A seasoned composter, Kaj explains the trick is to blend a 2 carbon to 1 nitrogen ratio. That is, two parts brown stuff (eg dry leaves, paper) and the rest green stuff like food scraps.... Trips to Jurien Bay introduced Kaj to Leucophyta Brownii, aka cushion bush, a hardy coastal shrub that can bring shape & texture to local gardens. Kajs knowledge & passion for WA plants makes him a valuable member of the APACE team!

05.01.2022 You can feel the change in the air as we transition from Makuru to Djilba and that means the Native Seed Season is just around the corner. We're seeing quite a bit of interest in our Native Seed Collection & Processing Workshop this year and have set aside 2 dates that we are presently seeking expressions of interest for; Saturday, September 19th 2020 Wednesday, September 23rd 2020 Our Native Seed Collection & Processing Workshop covers all of the essentials including licenc...ing, OSH, essential basic botany, environmental care, industry best practice collection methods, processing & extraction essentials for the enthusiast and / or community group, storage guidelines ... and much more ! The workshop is open to anyone at a cost of $180.00 / person, but we will gladly supply a quote if you want to book the Native Seed Collection & Processing Workshop exclusively for your group or staff. 04.01.2022 Templetonia retusa (Cockies tongue) out in bloom at Manning Park at the moment - definitely worth a look! This is a great upright screening plant at approx 2m tall. APACE WA currently have 500 in stock. You can order online or visit us 8-3PM weekdays See website for more details: https://apacewa.org.au/

04.01.2022 No. APACE does not have a genetics laboratory and no, we are not developing Frankenstein hybrids ! What you see here on this Dichopogon is called FASCIATION. It's a relatively rare phenomenon that occurs when the meristem growing cells in a plant are disturbed or interfered with in some way. Such disturbances can be anything from a hormonal imbalance, to virus or bacterial problems and even insect issues or a genetic problem.... Such plants are generally otherwise OK, but their stems and particularly flowering stems look a little, well different :) See more

03.01.2022 The weather might be a bit cool right now, but nature is otherwise showing us that the transfer from the Noongar season of Djilba into Kambarang is well under way. Still, this is rather early to be seeing Banksia grandis flowering in the bush around Perth. We'd usually expect to see these big beautiful grandis flower spikes in November ! Perhaps we are in for a rather long and hot Birak through to Bunuru ? Oh, and yes, we have quite a few Banksia grandis available in our retail section here at APACE :)

03.01.2022 What a cracking morning to be out at the Point Walter Recreation and Conference Centre, guiding the kids from Burrendah Primary School as they planted out our APACE grown tubestock into an all new Noongar 6-Seasons garden arrangement. APACE was approached for this project a few weeks back by the Point Walter Centre’s manager, Craig Waite and we were delighted to not only supply our quality plants, but a level of consultancy on the project also. Noongar elder, Vaughn McGuire, gave the Burrendah kids an awesome Welcome to Country today before APACE’s Projects Manager and resident WA native plant nut job, Richard McDowell, demonstrated how to extract the plants from their forestry tubes and plant correctly. Fantastic job everyone !

02.01.2022 Dear valued customers, Apace is still OPEN FOR BUSINESS to the public as usual, but we have made some changes in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. Apace nursery has taken a number of precautionary measures to minimise risk to our staff, volunteers and to the public. We have asked our volunteers and disability workers to immediately cease coming into the nursery to reduce the density of people on the premises overall. This means we are running on a skeleton crew of core staff.... We will no longer accept cashEftpos only please. If you would like to select plants from retailupon entering APACE, please wash your hands or use the hand sanitiser on the desk in retail. Alternatively, ask for assistance from staff. We ask that you follow the federal governments advice and remain no less than 1.5 meters from all people while browsing. As an outdoor venue with plenty of space, the nursery grounds are low risk, nonetheless will cap the number of people in the shop to a maximum of 5 at a time, and kindly ask for your patience while others complete their purchases. In regards to the subsidy plant sale, the format of the event will need to be adjusted to meet the standards abovewe are working with participating councils towards a solution and will let our customers know ASAP. We wish to thank our patrons for their continued support and understanding during these challenging times. With warm regards, The team at APACE

01.01.2022 We've got twins ! Polyembryonic germination is a fascinating feature we see occasionally in our Quandong growing program. You can Google the finer details if you want, but basically, two seedlings emerge from the one embryo (now you have to Google it, right !). One seedling carries its own unique genetic code, whereas the other is an exact clone of the parent tree. Usually, the unique individual doesn't survive, but we've got a few here now where both seem to be thriving.
