25.01.2022 National Convention Update and Call for National Awards 2020 Message from National President, Bethany Paterson. This years National Convention will be in Joond...alup, Perth, WA, 9th -10th October. Despite the uncertainty presented by Covid-19, we are still planning to go ahead with Convention, it is not just an important social event, it is our AGM, and Mick and Melinda Godfrey and their team have put a lot of work into organising this so we want to honour their efforts. Should border closures and safety issues prevent interstate travel in the weeks leading up to Convention, then we may need to reconsider our options, but at this stage it is full steam ahead and we thank you all for your flexibility during this difficult time. With the Convention date nearly upon us, it is time to submit your nominations for the National Awards. There are a number of Awards for which your Club can nominate, and you are encouraged to submit nominations for any and all categories. This is a great opportunity to show other Apex Clubs across Australia what your Club has achieved. Apexians are humble by nature and dont like to blow their own trumpet, but receiving a National Award is a significant acknowledgement of your hard work, so consider submitting as many nominations as you can, you wont win if you dont nominate! Information on our awards can also be found on the Apex Australia website under National Awards on the Resources page https://www.apex.org.au/club-resources. All award nominations are required to be submitted to the National Awards Director Simon Grant at [email protected] by 31st August, saved as a PDF document. For more information please contact [email protected] or [email protected]. Congratulations on your clubs achievements over the past year and we look forward to seeing you and your Award Nominations at this years National Convention. Yours in Apex, Bethany Paterson National President

14.01.2022 Message from outgoing National President Michael Godfrey: As the sun sets on the my last day in the top job I just want to pass on my most sincere thanks and a...ppreciation to all the members of Apex Australia, the Apex Foundation and Apex Global for your support over the last twelve months. To the National Board who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes, thank you for your hard work and dedication to the roles that you took on this year. Your honesty and integrity is something to be admired. To the Clubs who live and breathe the Apex Ideals to make a difference in your community, thank you, without you our Association would not exist and our country would not be the great place it is today. A big thanks to Tony Wilshire and the Apex Foundation Board for your continued help and support of the Association and the wider community. The commitment to the Bushfire Appeal was a highlight and really appreciated. To my friends, old and new, through our overseas Apex nations it was great to catch up. I look forward to what we can achieve through our Global connections and we really appreciate your support. I look forward to when we can get together again. And finally, but not least, my truly wonderful and awesome wife Melinda, your support to take on this role and your support over the last twelve months has been absolutely spectacular and it has been great to take this journey with you. I look forward to continuing our Apex journey and all that it has to offer. Once again thank you, look forward to catching up soon and I would like to wish Bethany and her Board all the very best, I know that you will do the Association proud. Enjoy the journey. Yours in Apex, Mick Godfrey

13.01.2022 CANCELLED - 2020 National Convention The National Board made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 National Convention which was intended to be held 9-10 Oc...tober, in Joondalup, Perth, WA. Whilst this is disappointing, we hope that our fellow Apexians will understand that with border closures and the spread of Covid-19, a National Convention has become untenable and cancelling the event was a necessary. In lieu of Convention, we will be holding our AGM by electronic means and asking clubs to send in a postal vote. We anticipate that postal voting packs will be sent out to clubs in early October. In addition, we will be announcing the results of the AGM and holding a virtual awards ceremony and training day on Saturday 14th November, 2020, so please put this in your calendars. Award nominations have been extended to 30th September so make sure you submit your nominations. Information on awards can be found on the Resources page of the Apex Australia website. Clubs are encouraged to use the virtual AGM as a real member training opportunity, and where possible, to organise interclub/regional catch-ups and make a day of fellowship. As we have heard so often in recent months, these are indeed unprecedented times, but out of adversity comes opportunity. Apex was born during the Great Depression 90 years ago, and our Apex Clubs once again can show their strength and resilience during these difficult times. (Remember, keep an eye out for your voting pack in the mail)

12.01.2022 Humans of Apex Leon Budden, National Database Director (Part 2 of 2) Im not sure what Im most proud of, the sense of achievement is not in doing something am...azing for ourselves, but doing something amazing for others. Apexians are terrible at blowing their own trumpet, we are the quiet achievers. One achievement that I am proud of is the Gawler Carols by Candlelight in Gawler. The event just took off and it went from an event with a budget of $700 per year, where a few hundred people turned up, to an event with a budget of $30,000 per year where 4,000 people turn up. It feels good to do something special for others. Those who know me, know that I dont switch off easily, I want to challenge myself, and if someone says You cant do that then I want to prove them wrong. There are arguments and debates in Apex, which is part of the attraction, it would be boring if you get what you want all of the time. The lessons I have learned is that you can count on your fellow Apexians when you need them, you might not always agree with everything someone is doing or saying, but that doesnt mean that they are bad people or a bad friend, they truly believe there is a better way to do things. We are all there for a common purpose, that binds us, that means that we can overcome our differences for the greater good. Apex has helped me grow enormously as a person, I like to think that I have become a more balanced person. I dont let the little things get in the way of achieving something special. There are plenty of funny memories in Apex, but after I had been to only a few meetings at the Whyalla club, they were organising what they called a bridge night and I said cards arent exactly my thing. Well it turns out that there was an old bridge between Pt Augusta and Whyalla, where the two clubs would meet under the bridge, take a keg of beer and try to drink as much of it as possible. It was my first introduction to an Apex social event and was a memorable night, even though Port Augusta didnt show up, we still gave the keg a tickle. If I was talking to someone who was considering joining Apex, Id say to them, dont think about joining Apex, just give it a go and then decide. I think that the vast majority of people who give it a genuine go, will be like me and will be hooked for life.
11.01.2022 August Presidents Report 2020 Firstly, a huge thank you to all who once again helped to make the Goodness Festival a success in the celebrations of all things science for National Science week. It is always so fabulous to have a group of volunteers who can just pitch in and get things done with minimal direction. Sadly we had a suite of cancellations and postponements this month. The National Convention scheduled to happen in Perth in October has been cancelled. The AGM wil...l be held by electronic means with clubs sending in a postal vote. The results of the AGM will be announced at a virtual awards ceremony and training day on Saturday 14th November, 2020, so please put this in your calendars. Never fear our Bunnings Sausage sizzle is still on the cards and will happen in the next couple of months, our BBQ Manager Vaughan is in the process of setting a new date. Just encase you werent sure what I am up to at the moment, I have been swimming with mantas, drinking beers and camping on the beach. So yep working hard up here.
