25.01.2022 I ALWAYS say, to pet owners OR for people training their Assistance or Therapy dogs - ‘feeding a dog out of a bowl is a wasted opportunity.’ This doesn’t necessarily translate literally - I still often feed dogs from a bowl. But I make them work a little for it - I ask for some obedience, or I give them their daily food in a bowl after a training session. But I also use a part of their daily intake for general training. When dogs come and stay with me for training, AT LEAST half of their food comes during training sessions. This method is sometimes met with frowns and criticism because people have it so stamped in their minds that dogs are fed from a bowl on a regular basis, and deviating from this is bad. I’m telling you, that is not true. This article has some great tips.

24.01.2022 It’s National Zoo Keeper week! Many may not know that I used to be a zoo keeper! I gained a lot of my foundational knowledge about training by working with amazing animals, awesome mentors and many great people I am lucky to still call very good friends. ... These are some highlights from my zoo keeping days: Smallest animal trained? We had to train some Common Marmosets to go into a crate in order to move them to a new exhibit. It took a lot of time and patience! Plus, one of them was pretty keen on swiping your face given half a chance, so you really had to have your wits about you to avoid the little ninja! Biggest animal trained? African White Rhino male, DJ. He was trained for a number of things, including open mouth, lift foot and targeting a ball on the end of a stick. We also trained him to be... comfortable... for endoscopy exams! Most memorable experience? Filming with Sir David Attenborough! A childhood idol and an epic legend, if anyone asked who was the person I most wanted to meet, this was the guy. We filmed together with DJ the rhino in the crush and then the film crew spent half of the day attempting to get footage of a rhino beetle on a cable of the enclosure with a white rhino in the background! I got to spend an hour with Dave (yeah, we’re on first name basis now) chatting about his favourite animals and experiences, and I even gave him a rundown on the basics of operant conditioning! Coolest behaviour trained? I worked for a year in a small facility in New Zealand where I trained a chicken (Chiquita!) to perform a short show. She would enter the barn, jump up haystacks, play a piano, rattle a tamborine, ding a triangle and pull down a little banner that said thank you for watching!

23.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago, Zulu and I went down to Port Macquarie to be assessed for the Conservation Detection Dog Certification of Australia. We passed! He is now proudly up on their website (see link below) and I’m excited for the future! https://www.caninedetectioncertification.com.au/certified-/

22.01.2022 It has come to my attention that there is some issue with the link between my website and my email, and as such, have not been receiving any enquiries sent through the site..! Big apologies if you haven’t heard back from me, I am attempting to fix the problem today. Avery

22.01.2022 If you have a dog, you should have some idea about how to stop a dog fight. It can be an uncomfortable subject, but its much better to be prepared. David from Pro Dog gives a good run down of the do’s and dont’s in this tutorial video.

21.01.2022 Wise words from one of my mates across the pond in NZ. A great reminder, or perhaps some new information, for all you dog lovers!

14.01.2022 I get asked pretty often what I use for treats/ rewards. Here is some of it! I mix it all up, that way the dog gets the element of surprise about what tasty treat will be coming, as well as the amount I feed - sometimes one piece, sometimes a handful. Anticipation, the element of surprise - creates motivation. As well as this dry assortment, I use premium quality kibble as well as Chunkers and devon roll cut into small chunks. Some of the treats are super nutritional and healthy, some of it is basically doggy junk food! To create motivation for the treats, I feed less at meal times (often just a couple chicken wings, chicken frame or some BARF) - basically the dog works for its food.

10.01.2022 A dog’s sense of smell has the potential to change the game for SO many situations! It excites me so much!

10.01.2022 APEX Pack Levels - Cubs is about building a happy, confident and engaged puppy Sigma is about building a happy, confident and engaged dog, that currently can’t easily be in the presence of other dogs. Delta, Beta & Alpha have set tests to graduate. These classes teach you skills that can be used in everyday life, and the graduation tests reflect our goals. ... I want to build a community that supports each other. That challenges each other. That learns and grows together. I want people to make new friends, learn new skills and knowledge they can share with others and to create a place to come and have fun! Most of all, I want to share with people my passion for these unreal animals that live with us. I want it to ignite others! I want to see a change in how people view dogs. To appreciate them for what they are. I want to help people to understand dogs better, to be able to communicate effectively with them and help them be the best they can be. I can’t wait to see you all there! AhhWoooooooooo!!! (That’s the APEX pack howl!!! Lame? Too far?.. Yeah, you’re right... Ok. I’ll drop the howl...)

03.01.2022 Looking for a way to get out with your dog, train around other dogs and learn some new awesome skills?!! Look no further! Kate at Empower Dog Training is a friend and a stellar trainer and she is starting up Trick Club in Coffs. As I am offering only limited pet training and I don’t run classes, I will definitely be recommending Kate to clients to help complement training for dogs I have worked with and for people I am unable to work with. Get on it!... UPDATE: Stoked to see so much interest and support! If you are keen but have some nerves about bringing your dog (you know if I’m talking about you!), I will be at the group lesson on Saturday 18th July to help those through it who have worked with me in the past. I’m offering this for FREE - because this will be so good for you and your dog! Spots are limited, so hit me up if you’re keen.

03.01.2022 This delightful little furball will be arriving in just over a week to spend some time with me for some foundational training during her ‘critical period of development’ (crate & toilet training, walking on leash, learning routines, basic obedience and most importantly - lots of socialisation and exposure to the world!) FOX has an important job for her future - she is going to be an Assistance Dog for a very excited little boy! So a professional touch early on will definitely help improve her chances of success! Thanks to Belloui Labradoodles for breeding and raising a great pup!

02.01.2022 FOX, the Belloui Labradoodle puppy in training to become an Assistance Dog, has been with APEX for a week now - and she is one awesome little puppy! She is super confident, social, smart and very level headed due largely (in my opinion) to great genetics and a perfect start in life with her breeder. Now we are continuing the work to make sure Fox will be the best version of herself that she can be. Puppy’s have a ‘critical period of development’ between roughly 6 and 16... weeks old. During this window, it is critical that a puppy has lots of positive experiences with the things that will be part of it’s world - places, animals, people, noises, smells, vehicles, surfaces etc. This is a key to building a well balanced dog, and especially important for dogs going into working roles. She will be going to her home in another week’s time and is going to settle right in with her wonderful new family.
