21.01.2022 APHASIA: Raising awareness in the community and how to #BeLikeBruce Bruce Simcock of Aphasia WA has been back on the trail to raise awareness of aphasia. Bruce and his wife Robyn presented to the Canning City District Lion’s Club, sharing their story of stroke and experience of living with aphasia.... We thank Eddie and the Canning City District Lion’s Club for inviting Bruce and Robyn to present and for helping to raise awareness of aphasia. It was a great night and Bruce and Robyn were warmly welcomed and their story was listened to eagerly by the club members. 19.01.2022 What a wonderful success! Our Quiz for a Cause completely sold out and the night was full of laughs, fun and support for Aphasia WA. The double denim theme was taken seriously with everyone looking dapper. We’re still tallying the final sums but over $2000 was raised which will go towards supporting our conversation groups and activities to raise awareness of aphasia.... A MASSIVE thank you to our fundraising sub committee including Jenna, Siobhan, Emily, Julia, Lianne, Josie, Michelle, Katie, Renee, Karen and Tom. Tom also doubled as our wonderful MC/Quizmaster and did a terrific job. We’re going to acknowledge our wonderful sponsors in a separate message and thank them for the heartfelt contributions. Who is keen to make this an annual event?! We certainly are!

17.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC Week! Today marks the beginning of NAIDOC Week 2020 which celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated by our First Nations people and Australians from all walk of life. We send wishes for a wonderful week especially to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and families living with aphasia. The theme of NAIDOC Week this year is Always Was, Always Will Be, which recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.
17.01.2022 Carly’s Mum has aphasia. In this video Carly talks about how support organisations including peer support groups, the UK Stroke Foundation and communication groups had a huge and positive impact on her Mum’s wellbeing and life. And Carly’s too! Our conversation groups here in WA are a place people with aphasia can find support, a community and a place to chat with confidence. Thank you for sharing your story Carly A Life After Stroke. You’re not awkward at all. Actually, you’re rather brilliant!
16.01.2022 Today, 3rd of December marks the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD). IDPwD is a United Nations observed day celebrated internationally. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions. Today is a great day to reflect on the achievements and contributions of people living with aphasia. It is also a great day to pause and consider the barriers - physical and attitudi...nal - that contribute to people with aphasia being excluded from conversations and from social activities. All of us can contribute to removing those barriers. Let’s start by raising awareness of aphasia! The photos below are from our IDPwD celebration last year. It was a great night with lots of fun and laughter. The abilities of people living with aphasia were highlighted and celebrated. In the year ahead, let’s choose inclusion and as the IDPwD encourages us to do, let’s see the ability in disability IDPwD website: https://www.idpwd.com.au Aphasia WA website: aphasiawa.com.au
16.01.2022 A great reminder from A Life After Stroke that conversations beyond topics of day to day needs are possible! Having a go, taking the time, using all communication methods and a sense of humour help a lot. These videos are great. They remind us all that people with aphasia have a lot to say, opinions to make and stories to tell. Let’s take the time to have a conversation.
13.01.2022 Today the 5th December marks International Volunteer Day. Mandated by the United Nations, International Volunteer Day gives an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Volunteers and efforts made by Volunteers to organisations and community life around the world. Here at Aphasia WA we have an incredible Volunteer team who coordinate and facilitate our Conversation Groups every week. Without our Volunteers our groups wouldn’t run and so we owe them our heartfelt gratitude and respect - today and always. To the Volunteers at Aphasia WA, we see you and all of the energy and effort you bring each and every week. Happy International Volunteer Day!

05.01.2022 RAISING AWARENESS OF APHASIA (and #BeLikeBruce) Back in February, Bruce Simcock, Vice President of Aphasia WA was interviewed by the West Australian newspaper about his experience of stroke and aphasia.... You can #BeLikeBruce and help to raise awareness of aphasia AND support Aphasia WA by coming along to our Quiz for A Cause! 01.01.2022 Here’s what young stroke survivors in Australia said helped their recovery. Having a sense of community, peer support and connection all feature as things that help. These are things we also aim to cultivate with our Conversation Groups at Aphasia WA.... Thanks for this fantastic project Stroke Foundation and the brilliant infographic too!
