12.01.2022 Yesterday beekeepers Therese and Laurie Kershaw drove me to see where the devastating bushfires have ripped through the NSW south coast. The Kershaw family have... been beekeepers for generations. Laurie knows the forests like the back of his hand. We drove for miles. It looks like this bushfire burned forever. They showed me burned out sites in forest near Bendarah and Nelligen that used to sustain hundreds and hundreds of beehives. Now, there is nothing left. No bush, no birds, no bees. Just silence. It is difficult to describe the loss beekeepers have endured. Not just the hives, but also the lost habitat that produces buds and flowers that feed bees so they can make honey. It is hard to tell how the forest will recover. I urge the Government to do all it can to help all those affected by fires in this terrible summer. But don’t forget the beekeepers, sometimes Australia’s forgotten farmers. Thanks to Therese and Laurie for showing us around.
