17.01.2022 It's true... Wonderful little creatures that they are, bees actually do communicate with each other by doing a dance. The purpose of the waggle dance is to show other bees in the hive where to locate the best pollen sources nearby. Each "dance move" is an instruction. A waggle to the left means turn left, a waggle to the right means turn right. ... Maybe at Apiary Made we should create our own waggle dance to direct each other to the best coffee or the best banh mi in town!

13.01.2022 For some reason medium sized beeswax wraps disappear in my house like socks! They are super handy for wrapping lunchbox treats, half a lemon or lime or covering a bowl of leftover yoghurt. The medium size is the one I reach for the most however for some reason they are always scrunched up in schoolbags or pockets. ... Luckily, they are easy to straighten out and rinse clean.
13.01.2022 Saint Valentine & His Beekeeping Patronage Since the dawn of time bees have been associated with health love and fertility. Some of the lingering medieval power...s that beekeepers invoked were those of Saint Valentine. It is thought by some, that in the effort to create a more demure and dour celebration of love, they searched for an innocent saint. A man named Valentine who was martyred on 14th February in the 3rd century fitted the bill. The problem was, he had nothing to link him with the making of love, the ‘birds and the bees’ or any kind of romance. Mightier pens were thought to have been wielded and he was re-branded as an Emperor defying prisoner who restored the sight to and fell in love with his jailer’s daughter. He is said to have left her a farewell note signed ‘Your Valentine’. At the organic root of it all are the birds and the bees. During the ‘Ides of February’, nature is rising, birds beginning to pair and plan the year ahead, spring flowers opening and honeybees are expanding and keen to find forage. #Beehives were blessed by beekeepers as the new season starts, and the days grew noticeably longer. Today Saint Valentine, as well as being patron of love and romance, is a patron of #beekeeping he is said to ensure the sweetness of honey, and the protection of beekeepers. Well known are the #aphrodisiac and fecund properties of raw honey and well made meads ensuring high spirited #honeymoons and higher #sperm counts. Conversely, the ancient Egyptians used honey in a spermicidal #contraceptive. Either way, bees are mythically denizens of the goddess of love, be she known as #Aphrodite #Venus or #Gwen and hence have the powers of romance and retribution, as cupid’s arrow is dipped in either ambrosial honey or acidic venom. 10.01.2022 "Help! I have never used beeswax food wraps before. Where do I start?" We hear this question all the time. Getting started on your plastic free journey can be really daunting so here are our tips... You can use beeswax wraps on anything except raw meat. ... Wrap your food or cover your bowl and then use the warmth of your hands to allow your wrap to stick to itself and create a seal. Never use hot water on your wraps. Only wash them in cool water with a small amount of detergent, if needed. If your food is warm, let it cool down before wrapping. Store flat in a drawer, rolled up in a glass or vase or anywhere cool, dry and handy in your kitchen. Our Assorted packs are a great starting point for beginners as they comprise three great sizes - small, medium and large.

08.01.2022 Yesterday I spent the afternoon pruning my roses. I adore roses and quite enjoy pruning them but don't enjoy the cuts and scratches I now have up and down my forearms. A quick slather of Repair Balm over my arms has reduced the swelling and rawness of the cuts beautifully. Speaking of Repair Balm, we made the most amazing discovery recently.
