16.01.2022 Last week, a group of senior Chinese editors and directors visited Sydney and Melbourne for a program arranged by the Asia Pacific Journalism Centre. The group explored the Victorian government's partnership with Jiangsu province in a meeting with Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources China specialist Jason Fitts, and was briefed by BHP Billiton Vice President Corporate Affairs, Head of Global Communications James Agar and Media Relations Manager P...aul Hitchins about the opportunities BHP sees in contributing to China's unfolding One Belt One Road initiative. A presentation by Committee for Economic Development of Australia Director Dr Rodney Maddock provided more detail on the current character of investment between our two countries. Activities in Sydney were designed to give the visiting group a stronger understanding of the Australian media landscape. Charlie Murdoch, marketing officer for NewsMediaWorks, discussed the challenges to media organisations in finding secure revenue streams in an age of digital advertising. The group also toured ABC's Ultimo Headquarters, and discussed ABC partnerships with Chinese media organisations with Managing Editor, Coverage Gavin Fang and Head, Digital Operations (ABC International) David Hua. The culmination of Sydney's agenda was a sit-down dialogue and dinner with senior Australian commentators including Peter Ryan, Brian Toohey, Andrew Clarke and Glenda Korporaal, moderated by Sky News correspondent Jim Middleton. The journalists present discussed key themes in media coverage of the relationship: the sometimes contentious issue of Chinese investment in Australia, the always contentious issue of Donald Trump's foreign policy agenda, and the impact of One Belt One Road on the future relationship. The dialogue dinner was generously co-hosted by Professor the Hon Bob Carr, Director of the Australia-China Relations Institute, and Bill Petrovski, Principal of William Roberts Lawyers, a law firm that works closely with local Chinese communities. The trip was arranged as part of an ongoing collaboration between Asia Pacific Journalism Centre and the All-China Journalists Association, which together run the China Australia Journalist Exchange. APJC thanks all who helped to make Chinese editors and directors involved in the program were: Mr TANG Yiyuan, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Beijing Daily Group Ms CHENG Yunjie, Deputy Director of Local News Desk, Department of China News for Overseas Service of Xin Hua News Agency Mr ZHOU Quan, Editorial Director of Public Policy Desk in the Media Convergence Centre of Shanghai Media Group (SMG) MR LIN Yan, Executive Director of the Press Centre of Shaanxi Broadcasting Corporation MR ZHANG Bingshun, Division Chief, International Liaison Department of All China Journalists Association
