24.01.2022 Dynamics are good vibes Hearing a track go from a tiny whisper to ! In comes a flood of sound. Your heart’s in your throat. Your skin’s tingling. And there’s this sudden rush of excitement. Those are good vibes. That’s music! In audio, we call it dynamics - a speaker’s ability to respond to rapid changes in volume. And as a loudspeaker designer, great dynamics are essential. So, how does Diamond 12 produce dynamics? Well, a lot of it’s down to damping. ... Damping surrounds are like the suspension/braking system of a speaker driver. They connect speaker cones to speaker baskets, cushioning the cone against stresses caused by its movement in a fixed chassis. But they also act like a brake on the speaker’s voice coil, the copper winding at the driver’s heart responsible for cone movement. Damping surrounds help return the speaker cone to first position once its movement is complete. Without it, inertia kicks in to produce unintended frequencies, ie. distortion. AKA, bad vibes. Traditionally, Diamond drivers have been mounted to high damping surrounds. But they were all matched to different cone materials. Matched to new Klarity composite, and the results were too sleepy for lead designer Karl Heinz Fink. He loved the tonal character of the new cone material but wanted Diamond 12 to be snappy and more, well dynamic! So, he did something unique. 22.01.2022 WHAT IS AN AMT DRIVER? You can’t talk about EVO without mentioning AMT Air Motion Transformer technology. It replaces the more common dome tweeter as EVOs high frequency driver. But what is an Air Motion Transformer? ... Well, the most common high frequency driver is a dome tweeter. Think of basketball cut in half, shrunk to the size of a 20-cent piece, and fixed to a standard (though much smaller) drive unit, more or less. AMT is entirely different. It’s a sheet of thin film folded like an accordion, wedged within a magnetic field, with circuit traces running through each pleat. When an amp signal runs through the circuit trace, the pleats expand and contract, giving us sound. And there are a few key advantages to creating high frequencies this way. First, this film is incredibly thin, so it has much less mass than a standard dome tweeter. And that means it reacts faster, making your music sound snappier and livelier. The low mass also makes it more efficient, so it requires less amp power to perform better. And that makes equipment matching much easier. AMT drivers also produce less distortion. 18.01.2022 Good vibes without Eddy Speaker coils are wrapped around things called speaker bobbins, and Diamond 12’s are super fancy. They’re high-powered epoxy/glass fibre bobbins, which is unusual because they’re more often found in far more expensive speakers. ... You see, fancy bobbins have the distinct advantage of not introducing eddy currents. And eddy current resistance is a natural phenomenon caused by speaker driver mechanics. It messes with speaker timing, and poor timing is a bad vibe. Now, explaining this can get fairly technical. But, if you imagine the speaker coil as a water pipe with sound flowing through it, then eddy current resistance causes all the bass notes to flow through the centre while the high notes flow at the edge. And while that doesn’t sound so bad, in truth, it is. Because the low notes end up travelling faster, which means they hit your ears sooner. And this creates time smearing effects that make your tracks sound muddy, messy, or unintelligible. And nobody wants that. Diamond 12’s fancy new bobbins reduce this effect and therefore increase linearity, which in English is a speaker’s ability to have all frequencies hit your ears at the same time. While no speaker in the world is perfectly linear, it’s certainly the aim. Because music is nothing if not about timing. And good timing creates good vibes.

17.01.2022 Cone flex is a bad vibe Diamond 12 woofers are a newly developed blend of polypropylene and mica. The combination makes the cone both lighter and stronger, and this is important for two reasons: Light cones have greater sensitivity and sensitivity translates to volume, so they generate better room projection. ... And strong cones handle more amp power - great for future upgrades. Plus, they produce tighter bass notes. But rigid speaker cones aren’t just great for big amps and better bass. The increased stiffness reduces cone flex, which is responsible for colouration. And colouration is a bad vibe. Colouration is industry speak for distortion: additional frequencies created by either the speaker materials or the speaker mechanics. It’s noise sitting on top of the music signal. Stiff cones improve damping: the speaker’s ability to start and stop vibrations quickly. And with better brakes, the cone is less likely to vibrate beyond the input signal, reducing colouration. Because in the end, the only colour you want is the rainbow of frequencies from your favourite albums. Those are good vibrations, the kind of good vibes that turn fans of music into music fanatics.
