23.01.2022 We are constantly at work digitising photos and records from our collections. This recently digitised photo of Launceston from Windmill Hill in 1867 looks acros...s the city to the Tamar River. The hills on the far side of the river, where Trevallyn and Riverside will be, are completely undeveloped at this time. The masts of many ships can be glimpsed, moored at the wharves of the North Esk River. Many photographers used Windmill Hill as a vantage point for their art, but most would point their cameras either towards the Cataract Gorge or to Invermay. In this photo William Cawston has chosen to shoot between those two points and we have a fantastic view of the Tamar River. You can keep up to date with our newly digitised material here https://libraries.tas.gov.au//P/Newly-Digitised-Items.aspx PH30-1-23 #LibrariesTasmania #TasArchives See more

22.01.2022 The year is 1893 and we are down on the Tamar River foreshore. The hillside in the background is West Launceston and the Cataract Quarry can just been seen behi...nd the ship. People are enjoying themselves by fishing from the dock, ladies are taking the sun and children are paddling in the water. The moored ship is the Cambria. This photo was taken by Frank Styant-Browne who was a member of the Northern Tasmanian Camera Club. LPIC21, album 22, image 636 #LibrariesTasmania #TasArchives See more

21.01.2022 Good morning everyone, As you’re probably all aware by now, Launceston is covered in a blanket of snow. While it looks amazing, there are a number of hazards ac...ross the city with several trees down over our roads and some minor spot flooding. The roads are also particularly slippery so please take care out there. Some roads may be closed so please check the Tasmania Police website for details. The snow has also impacted rubbish collection so please be patient. Our waste transfer centre is currently inaccessible. If you have anything to report, please contact our Customer Service Centre on 6323 3000. Our crews are already out and about clearing drains and removing fallen trees. We will provide further updates throughout the day. Be safe everyone! See more

16.01.2022 Need a winter hack for how to de-ice your windscreen without adding more water that could re-freeze and make your windscreen unsafe for driving? - Half fill a ...large zip lock bag with hot tap water (not boiling hot water from the kettle). - Make sure the bag is sealed. - Wipe the filled bag gently over the ice or frost on your windscreen until it melts. Thanks to Sergeant Scott McKinnell.

16.01.2022 Cataract Bridge (as it was called then) over the South Esk River was opened in 1864 with a public holiday and a procession of the Volunteer Rifles band, fire br...igade, masons, the Mayor and Alderman, the Governor and the people. In 1902 it was renamed King’s Bridge to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII. The bridge was widened in 1903 to add an extra lane, the Paterson Street Bridge was not installed until the early 1970s. We can clearly see the toll keeper’s cottage in the centre of the photo, and running underneath the bridge is the mill race to carry water to power the flour mill. This photo was probably taken in the 1870s by an unknown photographer. LPIC147-1-139 #LibrariesTasmania #TasArchives See more

09.01.2022 A 59 year old Penguin woman has been charged with failing to comply with the lawful requirement or direction of an emergency management worker as a result of tw...o incidents in Launceston today. The woman returned to Tasmania on the Spirit after travelling in country Victoria today. She was transported to Launceston by bus where she allegedly caused a number of issues before being placed into mandatory quarantine at the Best Western Hotel, Launceston. Shortly after 11am, police were called to the Best Western Hotel after the woman had allegedly become abusive and aggressive and was refusing to stay in her room. Police gave her advice in relation to quarantine and left shortly after. Just after 2pm police were again called to the Best Western in relation to the same woman. She was allegedly again refusing to stay in her room, being disruptive and throwing food. Police gave the woman a formal direction to quarantine however, she continued to refuse. The woman was arrested and charged with ‘Fail to comply with the lawful requirement or direction of an emergency management worker’ and has been detained to appear in an out of hours court session in the Launceston Magistrates Court at 8pm tonight.

09.01.2022 Two provisional drivers will appear before the Court after they were intercepted hooning and speeding in Invermay on Monday night. Investigating several compla...ints of vehicles hooning in the Lindsay Street area, around 8.50pm police observed two vehicles leaving the Riverbend Car Park reaching excessive speeds prior the Goderich Street intersection. A green Holden Commodore sedan was intercepted after it was detected travelling at 89km/h in the 50km/h zone. The 22-year-old Provisional driver was fined $731 and 6 demerit points and was disqualified from driving for 3 months. A white Toyota Hilux utility was also intercepted. The 17-year-old Provisional driver is being summoned to court for speeding and hooning offences. It’s timely to remind motorists that speeding is one of the fatal five contributing factors to fatal and serious injury crashes on our roads, said Sergeant Terry Reaney. I urge all motorists to drive to the speed limit and not put themselves and others at risk.

08.01.2022 Post corona the old taxi business model is dead! Interstate taxi owners/shareholders employing poorly trained drivers, results in low industry standards...as well as draining $$$ from our local Launceston economy! Newstead Cabs is 100% locally owned!

07.01.2022 This view from Cataract Hill looks east along Paterson Street and was taken between 1915 and 1939. On the right hand side of the photo in the centre is the Laun...ceston High School (now Launceston College). Construction on the school was completed in 1915 and it opened to students the next year. Closer to the camera can be seen the original building of the T.R.C. Hotel. There is a sign on the wall stating that A. R. Byrne is the proprietor. On the left of the photo in the foreground is a large advertisement for Brasso. We hope the man driving his horse down the centre of the tram tracks is aware of the tram coming up behind him! 04.01.2022 Before there was a bridge a ferry was the only way to cross the river at the mouth of the Cataract Gorge. The bridge across the South Esk River was constructed ...in 1863 and connected Launceston to the West Tamar area. Celebrations for the opening included a public holiday and a parade from Princes Square including the local Volunteer Rifles and dignitaries. Originally called the Cataract Bridge, the name was changed to King’s Bridge in 1902 for the coronation of King Edward VII. Three gentlemen have parked their buggy on the bridge, potentially causing a traffic hazard. Luckily for them it’s not rush hour! This photo was taken around 1898 by Henry Lewis. 02.01.2022 Police are appealing for a Go Pro taken from a fatal crash scene on Sunday to be returned. Inspector Ruth Orr said that crash investigators had become aware tha...t the 28 year old man killed on his motorcycle early Sunday morning in Launceston had a Go-Pro recording at the time. The Go-Pro recorded footage of the man riding in and around Cimitiere Street Launceston just prior to the crash, as well as the crash itself, Inspector Orr said. Initial investigations indicate that the Go-Pro became dislodged from the man’s helmet at the time of the crash and would have been somewhere within the crash site. Someone has removed the Go-Pro from the crash scene and disturbingly shared the distressing footage on it via social media platforms and Facebook Messenger. Not only is the footage is crucial evidence in respect to the coronial investigation regarding the man’s death, but it is creating further distress to the deceased man’s family at what is an already difficult time. Police have a copy of the Go-Pro footage are calling on the person or people responsible to do the right thing and hand the Go-Pro into their nearest police station at the earliest opportunity. Police are not seeking to question the person or people responsible if the Go-Pro is returned at this stage, Inspector Orr said. However if it is not handed back, we will continue to make inquiries to identify the person or people responsible for taking the Go-Pro and sharing the footage and take further action. Police are also asking members of the public who have the footage to stop sharing it. The footage is distressing and is understandably causing further unnecessary stress on deceased man’s family, she said. Anyone with information about who may have the Go Pro or initially shared the footage should call Launceston Police on 131444 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestopperstas.com.au
