24.01.2022 I was amazed to read that currently we throw out 1 in every 5 grocery bags purchased, costing the average household more than $1000 annually and Australia combined spends approx $8 billion on wasted food every year! Here are some ideas to help solve our food waste problem: 1. Use fresh fruit and vegetables and reduced to clear items first ... 2. Rotate stock in your fridge and cupboard. Bought some new eggs and still have left over? Move the old eggs to the front of the fridge 3. Plan weekly meals and buy only what you need. This will also help reduce unwanted snacking as you will have to make an effort to buy snacks making you question if you are really hungry or craving something else 4. Dont shop on an empty stomach. Doing so is likely to lead to unhealthy purchase decisions and over spending 5. Only purchase bulk or 2 for 1 specials on non-perishable items or those you know will be used within use by date 6. One night a week make dinner using only whats in your fridge and cupboard. It can make for very inventive recipes if it is the day before a shop! An easy way to do this is find a main ingredient (e.g. cous cous) and use Google to help find a recipe with what you do have.

23.01.2022 Intermittent fasting..any good? Intermittent fasting can be weeks of restriction vs weeks of normal intake, repeated spells of fasting each week, or time restricted fasting throughout the day (8 hour diet anyone?). Studies show that it can be a feasible alternative to continuous daily weight loss diets and may help improve insulin sensitivity. For some people Intermittent fasting can really work for their lifestyle and they see great results, others not so much. As always, its a matter of trying to see if it fits into your lifestyle and health goals

23.01.2022 Ever wondered what the difference between Greek yoghurt and Greek-style yoghurt is? Check out this article http://coach.nine.com.au//greek-yoghurt-vs-greek-style-yog

22.01.2022 Increase your healthy gut bacteria by feeding them aromatic vegetables (onions, leeks, artichokes), barley and oats, starchy foods (cooked potatoes, beans and lentils and green unripe bananas) and fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, yoghurt). New research suggests that gut bacteria could even help with weight loss! Watch this space

22.01.2022 An amazing breakfast and lunch cafe complete with Acai bowls, Coyo and protein pancakes. Delicious. Coconut, cow and almond milk available

22.01.2022 What is your health age?? Healthy Weight Week is also a great opportunity to take a moment and see where you are healthwise. Here is a great resource from the Queensland Government. http://healthier.qld.gov.au/calculator

22.01.2022 Stuck for a healthy snack idea? Why not drizzle some nut butter and yoghurt on celery sticks? It's one way to get an extra serve of veggies in, not to mention protein, calcium and some healthy fats

20.01.2022 Now that we are a one income family and can no longer call ourselves DINKS (double income no kids!), I decided to contribute however I could to help the household and thats through monitoring my spending at the supermarket! With just a few budget items Im going to whip up some satisfying meals this week for my husband, my one year old and myself: Baked beans: baked bean and cheese toasties Pasta: pasta bake with butter beans and veg found in my crisper, pasta with salmon, c...ream cheese and peas Eggs: dinner omelette, breakfast frittata Muesli: breakfast cereal and muesli muffins for snacks Butter beans: butter bean spinach and feta puff pastry rolls Frozen veg medley: chicken and veg stirfry with peanut butter and soy sauce for flavour, served with rice And my go too, cant be bothered to cook..poached eggs on toast! Most of these items cost $1 to $2 and great for helping trim the cost of shopping

19.01.2022 How do your favourite nuts stack up? Almonds, pistachios and peanuts are high in protein, but if you want to keep the calories at bay, almonds, pistachios, cashews, peanuts and chestnuts are your best choices. When it comes to fibre hazelnuts and chestnuts are the winners.

18.01.2022 The mighty mushroom is often overlooked but with its impressive make up its worth including in any meal. Touted as the vegetarians meat substitute its loaded full of vitamins and minerals including B vitamins, selenium, potassium and chromium. New research is showing it also contains small amounts of vitamin B12 which plays a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and the formation of red blood cells. Check out http://www.australianmushrooms.com.au/ for some great recipe ideas

18.01.2022 Food challenge! After a browse at a local Asian grocery store Ive picked up bitter melons, mung beans, okra and water chestnut flour. The lady behind the counter gave me a great recipe for the bitter melon..saute with onion and garlic and add chosen sauce, another customer behind suggested a stir fry with beef (they could see I was a fish out of water!). Thank God for Google.. will be excited to post outcomes. Dont be afraid to explore new foods and recipes! Variety is the spice of life

17.01.2022 Great time of the year for enjoying a delicious apple! Below is the growing season of Australian Apples. For more info visit http://apal.org.au/consumers/growing-seasons/

17.01.2022 I recently bought a Nutribullet (yes, Im very late onto the blender craze!) but I have found its a great way to make everyday food such as apples and bananas into something new and exciting. Blended fruits and vegetables also give you the benefit of retaining fibre for digestive health. Try not to go overboard on the amount of fruit used and add some healthy vegetables such as spinach, kale, beetroot, and squash (remember 2 fruit and 5 veg daily goal!). And why not use the blender to make a delicious desert incorporating F&V?? Heres a great recipe I found from ilovevegan.com

17.01.2022 Sunday afternoon hunger buster! Creamy dip to be served with crackers or fresh veggie sticks. Ingredients = Can of cannelini beans + 1 cup cottage cheese + fresh lemon and pepper OR lemon pepper seasoning! Full of protein, calcium, fibre and taste

16.01.2022 Stuck for an afternoon snack? Grab some tasty cannelini beans for a protein and fibre fix that will keep you fuller for longer. Add salsa and a dollop of sour cream for a Mexican twist

16.01.2022 I dont have time to prepare vegetables & fresh vegetables are too expensive are common reasons I hear why people cant meet their minimum 5 serves a day. Why not grab a bag of frozen mixed vegetables from your local supermarket next visit for $2. A 500g bag has approx 6 1/2 serves so cooking up half a bag almost meets your daily needs! I add canned tomatoes and protein with herbs and spices for a quick meal and often make bulk to have dinner done and ready for later. Visit http://www.gofor2and5.com.au/ for more recipe ideas.

16.01.2022 People often ask me how to stay more regular..add some of this bad boy to your breakfast cereal and notice the difference it can make Wheat bran (unprocessed) contains up to 40% fibre so great if you want to get things moving

13.01.2022 A fantastic cafe to checkout on the north side of Brisbane. I enjoyed a delicious and healthy Dahl packed full of protein and fibre and am making this cafe a regular staple

13.01.2022 Stuck for a healthy snack idea? Why not drizzle some nut butter and yoghurt on celery sticks? Its one way to get an extra serve of veggies in, not to mention protein, calcium and some healthy fats

12.01.2022 Today I walked into the supermarket and browsed the fruit and veg section, and then the cheese section..I was on the look out for inspiration. When I saw mascerpone cheese on sale for half price, I whipped out my phone and googled mascerpone dinner recipes. Up came a delicious chicken and bacon pasta recipe with a mascerpone cheese sauce. It turned out so good it is now one of my husbands new favourite dishes. Why not try finding last minute inspiration and saving a few dollars at the same time the next time you shop.

11.01.2022 Today is the first day of Australias Healthy Weight Week! Why not get involved and cook some healthy home cooked meals. Check out http://healthyweightweek.com.au/ and http://www.healthyfoodguide.com.au/ for some great recipe ideas. Here are some photos from my healthy weight week cooking class. On the menu was a spin on the traditional Mac and Cheese with a cauliflower and carrot cheese sauce and a vegetable and lean meat packed Meatloaf. 11.01.2022 Want to avoid those dreaded wrinkles and fight ageing?? Well I wish I could say there is one superfood that can solve all your problems but unfortunately it comes down to eating a wide of variety of fruit and vegetables daily to get all those wrinkle busting nutrients. Good nutrition in combination with protecting skin from the sun, good rest and avoiding overindulgence in alcohol (and no smoking!) can do wonders in the skin department. Heres a great link on how to include more fruit and vegetables into your day. https://fitinafatworld.wordpress.com//precision-nutrition/

10.01.2022 Healthy Weight Week day two! Stuck for what to have for a quick lunch thats packed full of low calorie high nutrient vegetables? Today I cooked some mixed frozen veg with an all natural heat and serve soup that I bought on special yesterday. Turned out to be a tasty, quick and satisfying meal! Could also add a tsp of curry mix to spice things up :)

10.01.2022 Great tips on avoiding the bloat!

09.01.2022 I made what I call my version of a french onion soup and it was delicious. Ingredients: roasted carrots and onions (+ bay leaves removed before blending) simmered and blended with beef stock, tossed in shredded chicken breast and a dash of smokey Tabasco sauce at the end for a kick. Served with puff pastry sheet. If youre hoping to trend weight downwards, an option is to swap puff pastry for a slice of wholemeal or hi fibre toast. Not full after soup for dinner? Increase your serving of chicken or make soup thicker by having more vegetable to stock ratio

09.01.2022 Sunday night challenge..exhausted from an eventful weekend, no energy to visit the supermarket, not wanting to order takeaway but wanting healthy comfort food. A glance in the cupboard and fridge finds two lone potatoes, a can of beans, a can of tomatoes, a slab of cheese and a lot of condiments. No problem. Tasty jacket potatoes with homemade mexi beans.. satisfying, full of protein and fibre. Happy husband too.

09.01.2022 We have such amazing resources in Australia, I am loving CSIROs new vision for our country from a food bowl to a delicatessen!: "To be the delicatessen of high quality products that meet the needs of billions of informed and discerning customers both here and abroad"... See full report at: https://www.csiro.au//Reports/Food-and-Agribusiness-Roadmap Australia has a rich history in food and agriculture and now has an opportunity to transform from the old notion of being Asias food bowl into a more realistic and growthoriented goal to be the delicatessen of high quality products that meet the needs of billions of informed and discerning customers both here and abroad. Our wealth of raw ingredients paired with our world-class science can help feed a world market hungry for premium food at a price that recognises its value. The food and agribusiness (F&A) sector can become a shining example of Australia exporting unique end products rather than just raw materials

07.01.2022 So tonight I was craving something chocolate. I usually have a stash of dark chocolate in the cupboard somewhere but tonight I thought Id experiment with something new. I added cacao powder, dates, chia seeds, cinnamon, vanilla, and stevia together and then added my secret ingredient..tofu! Turned out a hit, even my husband didnt recognise a hint of tofu. Not only is tofu high in protein, its also high in fibre, calcium, low in saturated fat, and high in omega-3s and anti...oxidants. Soy products have had a bad rap in the media in the past for mimicking the female hormone oestrogen however its been found that the phytoestrogens found in soy products are much less powerful than oestrogen about 1,000 times less. Promising research also shows soy products can play a useful role in reducing hot flushes during menopause, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, and protect against heart disease by lowering bad cholesterol. For more information on soy products and how to include these in your diet for increased health visit https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au//healthyliving/soybeans

05.01.2022 Ever wondered why pineapples sometimes sting your mouth? It's because of bromelain - an enzyme that breaks down proteins (and yes your mouth is made up of proteins!). But it's not all bad news, the cells in your mouth regenerate quickly, and pineapples are full of vitamin C, manganese and fibre. Bromelain also has great anti-inflammatory properties and is used to treat soft tissue injuries. De-coring your next pinaeaple could also reduce the tingling sensation as bromelain is concentrated in the core. Heated fruit and canned pineapple also have a lower bromelain content but don't forget to look out for pineapple canned in natural syrup to avoid added sugar. Bring on the Pina Coladas

03.01.2022 How much of your dinner plate is made up of vegetables? Want to get all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that help make you feel amazing, repair cells and keep your brain functioning at optimal levels? Make your plate consist of half non starchy vegetables and know that you are nourishing your body with food love

01.01.2022 In their prime in March: PUMPKIN! Pumpkin, which is actually a fruit provides iron, folate, magnesium calcium and vitamins A and C. Its also packed full of carotenoids which give it its bright orange colour. Eating pumpkin will help maintain healthy eyes, skin and immunity. Pumpkins are also full of antioxidants. Why not try some baked pumpkin tonight or add it to a delicious salad?

01.01.2022 Yesterday I went to the screening of one of the most inspiring documentaries called Embrace by Taryn Brumfitt, founder of the Body Image Movement. The key message I got was to embrace what is good about you and your body and enjoy rather than criticize. There is no point matching yourself up to some advertised photo shopped ideal. Have you ever met someone who exudes joy, happiness and body confidence who isnt a size 6 model? I certainly have. You dont have to live up t...o any standard except your own idea of what happiness looks like. Its amazing when you start to look at what is good, what you focus on grows. You dont have to say I love you cellulite just yet but you can look at your strong, supportive legs and how many miles they have taken you. This documentary featured women but the message is equally as important for men. Im looking forward to finding a male equivalent documentary to share. Thank you Stephanie Evans for your inspiring meditation and words of encouragement that blend perfectly with the Body Image Movement.

01.01.2022 Avocados are not only delicious but also provide a substantial amount of healthy monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA). Avocados are a naturally nutrient-dense food and contain nearly 20 vitamins and minerals. Why not spread some avo on slice of toast, make a delicious gaucamole or dice and add to a fresh salad?
