21.01.2022 Just a reminder that with this lovely spring weather, time for you to get out in your gardens and take some pictures and/or video to feature at our Spring zoom meeting on 16th September. The picture that I used to advertise this event, a WA pea, easily grown in Shire gardens, Chorizema glycinifolium, has gone viral. Currently it has reached around 135,000 people, 55 have said they are going to attend and nearly 2,000 have said they are interested !... Here again is a link for you to upload your contributions: https://www.dropbox.com/request/EljCz3iR1AeESD03xMu0

20.01.2022 This article re-iterates what we learnt from Greg Keighery a couple of weeks ago during his interesting Zoom meeting talk. The recording is available on our Youtube channel or via our web-site. https://theconversation.com/after-last-summers-fires-the-be

19.01.2022 Banksia time in the RNP at the moment. Some lovely walks around Engadine/Heathcote for those of you that live close enough for this area to be your exercise yard !

18.01.2022 We had over 70 members participate in our AGM at the weekend and then stay on for a very interesting talk titled From Banks to Bushfires, given by Dr Brett Summerell, from the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens. He talked about the Cook voyage and the contributions made by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander and the other scientists and botanists on board in the first part of his talk and then goes on to discuss the recent bushfires. You can re-watch these presentations, and more, o...n our YouTube page here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC808uq3c4u-yzF0YgZ445RA

15.01.2022 Todays exploration of a new track for me off the pipeline track near Heathcote road. Quite a lot of weeds around, but also some nice bush as well, plus birds and fungi.

15.01.2022 Todays plant from my daily walk in the Royal National Park near my home: Persoonia pinifolia or Pine-leaf Geebung. Information from the APS Sutherland CD: Plants of the Royal National Park, says this plant is named Persoonia (After the Dutch botanist Christiaan Henrick Persoon and pinifolia from Latin = pine-leaved. Normally bright yellow, the flowers can be hard to see in detail. This specimen is unusually more bright orange and the 4 petals and anthers turn orange/brown as they curl back and age.

13.01.2022 Ive been to this place a few times at different times of the year. It is a special place, with great views out over the valley.

12.01.2022 An interesting bit of research about feral wasps and the impact they are having on our already fragile and degraded ecosystems. In this case, in the snowy mountains. https://theconversation.com/forget-murder-hornets-european-

11.01.2022 Our April meeting was held (very successfully) over Zoom due to the current circumstances. We also recorded the meeting. 09.01.2022 These are some photos I took last week on a one hour walk in the Royal National Park close to where I live. Join us for our Zoom September meeting to see more and what our members have growing in their gardens at this time of the year. For details, see our events page.

08.01.2022 Dont forget our APS NSW Gathering tomorrow afternoon at 3.00pm via Zoom. Two excellent speakers Phil Trickett and Catriona Bate, the leaders of the Isopogon and Petrophile study group. Here is a link to the Zoom invite, all welcome. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89812319605... Meeting ID: 898 1231 9605 Passcode: 223604

07.01.2022 An interesting history and biology lesson ! https://theconversation.com/the-coastal-banksia-has-its-roo

06.01.2022 I dont think that this research is particularly ground-breaking or a surprise. Get rid of feral herbivores and get a return to a more diverse plant community with better shelter and food. Prescribed burning to reduce the impact of hotter and more frequent fires caused by changes to the plant communities. Control feral predators. AWC has been advocating this and showing the positive results for years. https://theconversation.com/the-mystery-of-the-top-ends-van

06.01.2022 Wild Pollinator Count! On now 1219 April Great activity to do in the garden with kids... A lot of research is still needed to identify all our pollina...tor insect species, understand their ecology, and how they are affected by human activities. You can help by watching any flowering plant for just ten minutes sometime in the count week. You dont need to be an insect expert, and you dont need special equipment. Australia has around 2,000 native bee species, all of which are important pollinators in crops and gardens all around the country. There are a couple of thousand butterfly, wasp, fly, moth, beetle, thrips and ant species, some of which are documented pollinators. Unfortunately, we dont have a lot of information on the ecology of many of these insects, what flowers they pollinate, or where they are found. Important citizen science work can be done here, in your own backyard...

03.01.2022 A delightful little story from the leafy northern suburbs of Sydney. We have yet to experience this in the Shire, but they are coming ! http://urbanfieldnaturalist.org//turkeys-watching-people-w

03.01.2022 Good to see that the RAS is using a picture of some Grevilleas to highlight their latest competition. Maybe they took this picture of one of our winning entries at the Royal Easter Show ? Anyway, use this link to learn more if you want to enter your garden in the competition and if so, let us know how you go. http://www.rasnsw.com.au//sydney-sp/about-the-competition/

02.01.2022 Nationals MP John Barilaro is at it again seeking to delay the much needed brumby cull in the Kosciuszko National Park. He is quoted as saying that : "Weve los...t fauna, flora, wildlife, and unless people think they are some sort of magical creature, weve unfortunately lost brumbies as well," Well, duh ! Its a bit hard for plants and frogs and small mammals to gallop away from the fire, unlike the wild horses. A complete straw-man argument to delay it for another year while the damage escalates. Lets hope Matt Kean stands his ground. https://www.abc.net.au//brumby-cull-suspended-in-/12325884

01.01.2022 The APS NSW Youtube Channel also has a recording of our recent Sutherland Group meetings (held over zoom in this COVID time). Check out the channel for the latest videos (including those from other district groups and the NSW AGM). https://www.youtube.com/user/AustPlantsSocietyNSW
