15.01.2022 National award for health worker A senior health worker at Cleveland Youth Detention Centre has received a national award for his work in educating young o...ffenders about drug and alcohol addiction. Robert Assan received the First People’s award from The Australiasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs (APSAD) for his 25 years in working with youth addiction, including the past three years at Cleveland Youth Detention Centre. Mr Assan said the confronting reality for many young offenders is that they were already facing significant challenges with addiction. The reality is that a lot of these kids are experimenting with drugs and alcohol for an extremely young age and by the time they get to us at 11 or 12 they already have full blown addiction, he said. My job is to work with our clinicians to make sure that when we are giving them the information about what the drugs and alcohol are doing to their bodies and how they can stop that they are actually understanding that information. The goal is to make sure that when they get released, they don’t come back and that when they are ready to beat their addiction, they know how to do it. Robert is both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander who was born in the Northern Territory, but his cultural background is from Thursday Island. Across his professional career, he has trained Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers from across Australia in how to work with First Nations people with addiction. I was a trainer for the first ever alcohol and drugs course that was designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, he said. In the mid-2000s I helped develop a training program for screening and brief intervention for drug, alcohol and mental health problems and was eventually rolled out nationally. I was also able to contribute to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander section of the National Alcohol Treatment Guidelines. Team leader of the North Queensland Adolescent Forensic Mental Health Service Vicki Ford said the award was well deserved. This award recognises the contribution Robert has made in advancing the health of First Nations people in extremely challenging circumstances, she said. He is an extremely valued member of our team and we are immensely proud of his achievement. Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs (APSAD)

Presenter: Alys Havard, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Big Data Research in Health, University of NSW This NHMRC-funded research used linked pharmaceutical claims and administrative health data for all women who gave birth in New South Wales and Western Australia between 2004 and 2012 to examine the extent to which prescription NRT patches, bupropion and varenicline are used during pregnancy. To examine the effectiveness of these medicines during pregnancy, the smoking cessation rates associated with varenicline relative to NRT patch use was measured. The risk and benefits associated with these medicines in pregnancy was assessed by comparing the rate of adverse birth outcomes among women who used prescription NRT patches, bupropion or varenicline with the rate among women who smoked but did not receive any of these medicines.
