25.01.2022 Clematis 'Southern Stars". A large flowering Clematis putting on a show and one photo shows it scrambling through an old Verticordia grandis. Growing in a garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
24.01.2022 Grevillea wilsonii. A beautiful bright flowering, small shrub worthy of a position in a garden if conditions are suitable. I have grafted this one because of my garden conditions,so not sure how reliable it would be on its own roots. Growing in a garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
22.01.2022 Callistemon Hot Pink, Melaleuca ryeae, and a portion of one of the blocks in my garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
22.01.2022 Anigozanthos . Anigozanthos species have grown well this year. Not sure of the species names as some may have been bought, others have self seeded and I have propagated some from seed and scattered them around some of the garden blocks. Over the years I have found out these tall growing Anigozanthos have survived with little attention and nearly all of the smaller bush types have failed in my garden west of Victor Harbor SA. (all getting the no attention type of gardening).
22.01.2022 Grevillea Pink Ice. A beautiful Grevillea for a garden. A hybrid between Grevillea zygoloba and G.crithmifolia. I have grafted this one as a low standard and pleased so far with the effect. Growing in my garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
21.01.2022 Melaleuca fulgens subsp steedmanii and Leptospermum Mesmer Eyes. A couple of bright flowering shrubs growing in a garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
19.01.2022 Eremophila hybrid. This is a grafted plant of an Eremophila hybrid that came up in my garden after unseasonal rains for our area between Christmas and New year 2016. Other Eremophilas came up as well, but I think this one is the best out of the ones that came up. Lots of Eremophilas with in a twenty metre radius, with two likely suspects as parents close by, Eremophila mackinlayii and Eremophila hygrophana. Growing in a garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
11.01.2022 Grevillea scapigera. A beautiful flower on this Grevillea, but the plant isn't the easiest one to grow as it gets a fungal attack at times. This one I have grafted, and at the moment is reasonably healthy but going by others I have had and planted out ---------?
08.01.2022 Grevillea insignis x georgeana. A medium to large shrub that puts on a display of showy flowers. Growing in a garden west of Victor Harbor SA
08.01.2022 Grevillea Canning Gold. (A G. spinosa x G. juncifolia selection) Photos showing two of these beautiful shrubs growing in a garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
07.01.2022 Callistemons have been spectacular this year. Photos of a couple in my garden. The first one has been in for years and I think it may be Callistemon harkness (Gawler Bottle Brush) planted along the driveway to the house. The other one is Callistemon Kings Park Special. Growing west of Victor Harbor SA.
05.01.2022 Grevillea eriostachya Dwarf form and Grevillea spinosa x eriostachya growing in my garden West of Victor Harbor SA.
05.01.2022 It has been a bit of fun setting up garden blocks over the years. Photos taken in the last month of a few of the many blocks that have been set up in a garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
04.01.2022 Grevillea Panrock Princess. A beautiful colour and a good grevillea to add colour to a garden. Growing in a garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
04.01.2022 Santalum acuminatum. (Quandong) These shrubs or trees make a good garden plant. I have several scattered around the garden blocks. Some have been propagated from seed then planted, and lots of others I have just scattered seed under some plants and let nature take over and enjoy getting some surprises when years later a young Quandong plant appears through a shrub.
02.01.2022 Eremophila racemosa 'Peaches and Cream' One of the tough and hardy Eremophila shrubs growing in a garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
01.01.2022 Hemiandra linearis. I have had a message from a friend who says this one is H linearis and not H.pungens as mentioned earlier. A recently planted interesting ground cover plant growing in a garden west of Victor Harbor SA.
01.01.2022 This is a cautionary tale. In 2014 before our first Open Garden we put this lattice up to screen John's shed, and planted a Pandorea pandorana 'Ruby Belle' at ...each end for quick cover. We certainly got that!!!! It's a stunning climber, beautiful even when not in flower with its glossy green leaves, and just glorious in flower. But so vigorous. Because of where it was it couldn't be left to just roam free, we needed access to the shed, it's where we put up out portable clothesline, and on the other side were garden beds I didn't want smothered. In the active growing season it had got to the point where John, as "Keeper of the Creepers" was pruning it twice a week, and if he didn't we had serious concerns for our saftey and our dogs if any of us loitered to close to it for any length of time. It also wasn't doing John's shoulders any good at all, so I realised that it was time to let go of my lovely climber, and settle for a much less aggressive substitute. When John started removing the foliage and we realised how entwined the vine was with the lattice I suggested removing the piece of lattice, getting a new one and saving him some work? Not to be defeated by his nemesis he spent some considerable time removing every single piece from the lattice, cutting the trunks back to their base, drilling holes in them and (I think rather too enthusiastically) filling them with Blackberry Killer! So it was no more, and I've planted the lovely red flowered Marianthus erubescens in a bottomless chimney pot to give it an extra boost at one end. I have another for the other end, haven't got round to it yet, the first one is doing well, and I'm just a bit wary after planting two last time! So if you are thinking of planting Pandorea pandorana 'Ruby Belle' just think again, do you have a strong support, and a LOT of room. It may save you some angst down the track!
