24.01.2022 #APS THROWBACK Girls’ Rowing at Caulfield Grammar School has a long and proud history. The first female students took to the water in 1983 and the following year, Caulfield entered a Girls’ crew in the Senior Regatta at The APS Regatta (Heads of the River) for the first time. The crew of Debra Hollingsworth (bow), Natalie Kropach (2), Elaine Potgieter (3), Shen Fulton (stroke) and Wendy Sawyer (cox) competed in the third division of the girls' Fours in 1984 and again in 1985.... By 1986, they were rowing in the second division. Today, Girls’ Rowing at Caulfield is stronger than ever, having won back to back Heads of the River in 2012 & 2013 (pic #2) Can you name any of the 2013 Girls First VIII? We can’t wait to see all the Girls competing at The APS Regatta on 20 March at Lake Nagambie. Bring on 2021! #apssport #APS #apsrowing #grassroots #schoolsport #unitedcouloursoftheaps #leaders #apsrepsport We enjoy celebrating the success of our students and programs, so if you have a good APS sport story, send it to [email protected] with a photo/video and a few lines for publication on our APS Social Media sites! #shareyourstory

23.01.2022 Congrats to Haileybury s Oscar Pissarro (OH 2019) on his impressive win at the 2020 Formula F3 Championship! At just 19 years old and in his debut year, Oscar secured the championship by 3 points after placing seventh in the final race at Mugello in Italy. The APS Sport community wish Oscar the very best and are excited to see what comes next! Oscar secured the 2020 Formula 3 Championship, capping an impressive maiden campaign for the 19 year old.... Sargeant had come into the race level on 160 points with Piastri but the American was an early casualty in the 21-lap race. Oscar made the most of teammate and main championship rival Logan Sargeant crashing out early in the season finale at Mugello in Italy on Sunday to claim the title. That meant Piastri's seventh-place finish earning him four points allowed him to claim the title by three points from France's Theo Pourchaire, whose third-place was not enough to close the gap to the Melbourne product. Former Australian Formula 1 driver, and Piastri's mentor, Mark Webber, was trackside to congratulate the new champion. "I've been quite consistent over the year and I think also the way I've bounced back from those setbacks we've had," Piastri said. "We've had quite a few technical issues and other problems to deal with. "So, I think my consistency and keeping my head cool has been been the biggest thing." Oscar also offered commiserations to Sargeant after the race, knowing his teammate's misfortune had played a key role in his title success. "The last few weeks have certainly put me to the test emotionally," Piastri said. "I just can't really believe we just won that thing. Obviously, I feel really sorry for Logan. You never want to see that happen to your teammate and your title rival." Oscars title success will represent a huge step towards realising his own Formula 1 ambitions. #apssport #APS #grassroots #schoolsport #unitedcouloursoftheaps #leaders #apsrepsport We enjoy celebrating the success of our students and programs, so if you have a good APS sport story, send it to [email protected] with a photo/video and a few lines for publication on our APS Social Media sites! #shareyourstory

23.01.2022 Ashley Farmer knows how to overcome any obstacle in her path. Earlier this year, @wesley_college_melbourne Yr 10 student won the Vic All Schools title for 90m hurdles, & in the 200m hurdles. Following those successes, she went on to represent the Vic at Nationals & represent @wesleycollegeaths, in the Nitro series, coming in the Intermediate Girls category. Moving to Melbourne to attend Wesley this year was a big opportunity for Ashley. At home in Bright, she spent most ...of her spare time out on the athletics track or hill running. Being able to join a high-standard athletics squad & access state-of-the-art sports facilities at the colleges Glen Waverley campus were among the drawcards of attending Wesley. During athletics season, she trains 3 nights a week, 2 hours a night, on the track & spends 2 nights a week with a personal trainer in the Wesley College pool or gym, located close to Wesleys Learning in Residence boarding facility where she lives during the school term. If it all sounds like a lot of hard work for the young athlete, but she has Friday nights off and relaxes with her boarding peers or participates in one of the many social activities hosted by the boarding staff. Before the lockdown, some of her favourite events were attending AFL games and going to the cinema. I love living in Melbourne. I feel very close to everything & can get to places easily by public transport, Ashley said. I love going into the city with friends or to St Kilda or Brighton beach, which is easily accessible. Ive made so many friends down there and their families make me feel so welcomed to stay over and make the most of the opportunity I have been given. Recently back home in Bright during the period of remote learning, Ashley said she realised how much she missed her boarding peers. I missed the people who I formed amazing friendships with, and it felt strange doing everyday things like homework or making food without my boarding friends, she said. The facilities are amazing & I felt so lucky to be there with all these amazing people. I missed all aspects of Learning in Residence and couldnt wait to get back. Good luck for the future Ashley!

22.01.2022 Former The Geelong College footballer, Joe Couch, the son of the late great Geelong Cats Brownlow medallist Paul Couch along with Mason Fletcher, son of Essendon great Dustin Fletcher, will fly to the U.S in the coming weeks in pursuit of a career in the NFL. Joe Couch, is set to pursue an NFL career after receiving a life-changing college scholarship opportunity in America. Couch, 26, has signed a three year deal with Ouachita Baptist University and will move to the US in ...early January to study Exercise Science. The opportunity to train with Prokick Australia only arrived because the local football season was cancelled in what proved to be a sliding doors moment. I was looking for a career change. Couch said. I really wanted to return to study. I was working in Insurance at the time and I was watching my brother, Tom, travel the world as a strength & conditioning coach and just the great thing he’d done in tennis. I was like that’s a pretty good life. Joe has been plagued by many long-term injuries playing for Bell Park, St Joseph’s, and VAFA Clubs Old Scotch and Old Geelong. Joe said that when the offer came through from Ouachita via email, he was pretty pumped. You work pretty hard and for me I was doing full -time work and trying to get in weight sessions & training sessions he said. I guess I was overcome with relief that the work I’d put in had been noticed. We wish Joe all the best in his punting career! #apssport #APS #apsfootball #schoolsport #apsrepsport #unitedcoloursoftheaps #leaders #apsalumni We enjoy celebrating the success of our past students and programs, so if you have a good APS sport story, send it to [email protected] with a photo/video and a few lines for publication on our APS Social Media sites! #shareyourstory

19.01.2022 #Repost The Age - Sunday 30 August 2020 In a continuing series in @theageaustralia, another group of Year 12s across the state have reflected on the year that is, including Brighton Grammar Schools Captain of Football Darby Hipwell, speaking on behalf of many, who have missed out on wearing their school colours one last time in @aps_sport competition. If you havent read the feature, see the link below, accompanied by some great photography too.... "It's almost like a point to look forward to, to work towards when you're getting through those trying hours of study. It's just an emotional cathartic release." For those who play school sport, it was also due to be the final year to compete together after several seasons building up to this point. "As a younger kid, we always looked up to the year 12's playing in the footy team," says Darby Hipwell, the captain of the Brighton Grammar School firsts football side. "It was kind of our year and our chance to do that." Also as captain of the Sandringham Dragons, a team which regularly produces top-level talent, Darby has the extra challenge of trying to get drafted into the AFL when all junior leagues have been cancelled. Like many, and not just those his age, he is hopeful that 2021 turns out to be better than this year. "At the moment the celebration of turning into an adult is not living up to its expectations," he says. Turning 18 is a moment unlike any other. It's an age when everything out of reach suddenly becomes attainable. Alcohol, the right to vote, driving. A child in society's eyes one day, an adult the next. And, for tens of thousands of people, the final year of school. An ending punctuated by milestones - formals, dances, athletics carnivals, valedictory, muck up day, schoolies a time that, good or bad, most will remember for the rest of their lives. But what happens in a coming-of-age story when those occasions are experienced alone or cancelled, probably forever? This is what Melbourne's class of 2020 faces, as COVID-19 puts growing up on hold. 18.01.2022 Congrats to the 8 former & current APS Netballers selected in @netballausts Netball Centre of Excellence Squads for 2020, including the Australian 21/U squad selected ahead of the 2021 Netball World Youth Cup. Well done to the following girls: Gabby Coffey & Maddie Riddley from @caulfieldgs ... Ruby Bankmeyer, Allie Smith (current @melbournevixens squad), Zara Walters & Brooke Wilson (representing NT) @geelonggrammar Emily Andrew & Tayla Brown @wesley_college_melbourne Well done Girls, on a wonderful achievement!! While the Netball World Youth Cup has been postponed, preparation of the Aust squad will continue to ensure ongoing technical, tactical, physical & psychological development of the group as they approach the benchmark event. Selection of these squads was conducted differently this year after the National Netball Champs, where selection is normally made, were cancelled due to COVID-19. National selectors have since worked closely with state representatives within the National Institute Network to finalise the squads, assessing each athlete based on a range of attributes, focusing on current and potential performance. With squad selection now complete, Netball Australia aims to deliver training camps in late 2020 (dates tbc) to ensure players maintain access to competition and development opportunities. The 2020 17/U and 19/U camps will be led by Netball Centre of Excellence Head Coach Michelle Wilkins and the 21/U camp will be led by Australian 21/Under Head Coach Kylee Byrne. Wilkins spoke of the immense talent within the Netball Australia pathway this year. Selection of these squads wasnt an easy process due to the depth of talent we have coming through our system. We have even seen some of our athletes within this group starring on the Suncorp Super Netball court this season, she said. While it has been a challenging year, it is our priority to ensure we are constantly nurturing and developing the talent coming through the Netball Australia pathway and we look forward to bringing everyone together later in the year for our training camps. #apssport #APS #apsnetball #schoolsport #unitedcoloursoftheaps #leaders #apsrepsport

17.01.2022 Australian Rules Football helps unite people across our nation from all different backgrounds and, with the growth of the Womens game, Aussie Rules is now enjoyed by both female & male players. Playing professionally is a major honour, one Caulfield Grammar School Grace Buchan (CGS2013) was granted following years of hard work and persistence. In 2018 Grace played in Collingwoods inaugural VFLW side & in 2019 she was co-captain of the team. Graces devotion to her club, co...ach & teammates helped lead her team to Premiership success last season. In her football career, Grace loves leading by example & encouraging others to push their physical & mental limits on the field & in their everyday life. She knows that success comes as a direct result of making sacrifices both at training & in competition. Her willingness to hold others accountable is part of what makes her such a valuable & admired leader. Before she moved to Collingwood, Grace was a key member of the @cgfc1920 Grammarians inaugural Womens team in 2017. She played 12 games for the CGFC in 2017, kicking 4 goals & being named in the best players in all but one game. She was also a member of the inaugural @vafahqs (VAFA) Big V Womens side that defeated AFL Goldfields & she finished 8th in the VAFAs Premier Womens B&F Award. At the CGFC, Grace was the inaugural winner of the Liz Wilson Medal for the best & fairest Senior Woman player. Despite having moved on to play for the Casey Demons, Grace is still inspired by her old Collingwood coach & fellow Caulfield Grammarian, Penny Cula-Reid (pictured). Penny was a leader in the fight to create a football pathway for girls so they could play through their teenage years & then move up to the senior level. In fact, Penny was a pioneer in helping to bring about the greater opportunities for women that now exist in football! Grace continues to be motivated by Pennys relentless commitment, leadership skills & the passion she brings to both her sport & the community. Currently, Grace spends her time as a sports podiatrist helping people achieve their health goals. Her aim is to ensure that athletes, and everyday active people, are happy and moving without pain or discomfort. Well done Grace, keep up the great work! They were on a redemption mission this entire 2020 Chemist Warehouse WNBL season but they had the pressure of expectations too and the Southside Flyers have realised their potential with a 99-82 Grand Final victory over the JCU JCU Townsville Fire on Sunday.... As the old Dandenong Rangers, the club won championships in 2004, 2005 and 2012 but it has been a long wait since with a name change to the @southside.flyers along the way. Since that last title, there was Grand Final losses in 2017 & earlier in 2020, preliminary final defeats in 2013 & 2014, & semi-final exits in 2015 & 2016. But that was all put behind them as they claimed the championship with the 17-point win in front of a full house at Townsville Stadium. The Flyers now win the championship on the back of a 9 game winning streak & they did have to overcome an early deficit against the young and excited Fire team playing in front of their home fans. Bec Cole produced some dagger 3’s in the 4th quarter to help the Flyers end up triumphant for the WNBL season spent in Far North QLD. Bec Cole won her first WNBL championship & was instrumental in the result with 22 points, 5 steals & 3 assists. Cole couldn’t hide what the result meant to everyone involved straight afterwards. It feels like I’ve been waiting 20 years to do this and I’m just so proud to do it with these girls, representing Southside Flyers and have our family and sponsors here. I’m pretty speechless, Cole said. It means the world. It means that in 2020 with all the blood, sweat & tears that we went through down in Victoria was worth it all. We are so emotional, & it just shows this creates friendships & memories to last a lifetime. Inspirational Capt Jenna O’Hea overcame a knee injury to lead the Flyers to the title & had 5 points & 5 rebounds to celebrate her 3rd WNBL title. It’s a little bit indescribable right now, it’s been a long time between drinks to win a championship & we got so close last season, O’Hea said. #apssport #APS #apsbasketball #grassroots #schoolsport #unitedcouloursoftheaps #leaders #apsrepsport #apsalumni We enjoy celebrating the success of our past students and programs, so if you have a good APS sport story, send it to [email protected] with a photo/video and a few lines for publication on our APS Social Media sites! #shareyourstory

08.01.2022 Action from the Geelong Grammar School vs The Geelong College outdoor matches on Saturday!!

07.01.2022 Congrats to former APS Sport Rep Capt, Geelong Grammar School & current Premiership-winning midcourter & Melbourne Vixens squad member, Allie Smith, who has been rewarded for her impressive debut year, having signed on for the 2021 Suncorp Super Netball season. Described by Head Coach, Simone McKinnis OAM, as being super-competitive, hungry for a contest, & boasting plenty of flair & athleticism, Allie brings a newfound energy to the Vixens group. I’m so excited, I’m literal...ly over the moon. I’ve been working so hard since I was younger, and it’s really rewarding now that it’s starting to pay off, Smith said. Allie was instrumental in the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) season, after debuting in Rd 10, & then stepping up as the starting wing defence in replace of Kate Eddy, who missed the Major Semi Final through injury. Her ability to step up & perform for the team when it counted despite her relative inexperience - earned her the Vixens 2020 Rookie of the Year Award. This year has honestly been so surreal. I don’t think I could have ever imagined this year panning out as it has. COVID has been an absolute nightmare the pandemic has caused a lot of grief for a lot of people. But, in a way without COVID I wouldn’t be where I am. The hub was a great experience & great exposure to the elite environment - I’d happily do it all again. I’ve grown up sort of admiring all of the girls that I’ve played alongside this year at the Vixens and it’s just been amazing on so many different levels. The 20-year-old has already ticked off a number of achievements in her netball career, including a National 17/U Championship, a National 19/U Championship, a Victorian Netball League Championship Division Premiership and a Victorian Fury Premiership in 2019. And after taking to the court in the 2020 SSN Grand Final, she can add a Suncorp Super Netball Premiership to her list of accolades as well. All the best Allie for the season!! #apssport #APS #apsnetball #grassroots #schoolsport #apsrepsport #unitedcoloursoftheaps #leaders #apsalumni

07.01.2022 What a moment!! Best of luck on your debut & for the future Will, we are all right behind you on your journey! Footnote: Will made his maiden half-century & a 100 run partnership before given out LBW on 62. 06.01.2022 The Geelong Colleges Steph Williams is a remarkable young woman. The highly talented footballer has been mainly based in Victoria since the age of 11, going to school at Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville and more recently, Geelong college. Given the NTFL season runs over summer, the proud Larrakia woman would return home to play as many games as she could for the Darwin Buffaloes' U18 side, before coming back to Victoria for the start of Term 1....Continue reading

06.01.2022 "I guess thats in my nature, to grab any opportunity with two hands & really make the most of it. So if I am lucky enough to get that opportunity again, Ill hopefully be able to get out there & have a red-hot crack. - Allie Smith former @aps_sport Rep & Capt and @geelonggrammar (OGG2017) Allie was two bites into a banana at half-time of the Round 10 game against the West Coast Fever when she learnt she was about to officially become a @melbournevixen. Trailing by 11 goals..., coach Simone McKinnis announced a defensive reshuffle introducing Smith for her debut at WD. So that was a shock to the system, Smith recalls. I definitely put the food to the side & had a bit of a conversation with Simone & the girls & they obviously said what needed to come out in my game. Simone said just to play my own game, bring my speed into it, and fresh legs were needed, too. She said keep the energy high, have a great attitude & just go hard for any ball that you can get your hands on. One of 5 Vics named recently in the preliminary Aust 21/U squad ahead of the postponed World Youth Cup, this is Smiths 2nd year as part of the extended Vixens squad. The Geelong Grammar product represented her state from primary school level upwards & successfully along the junior pathway at every age level, then played in the 2019 Deakin University Australian Netball League premiership with the Victorian Fury under Di Honey, her old school coach at GGS, & long-time Vixens assistant. But this has been next level, with court-time in the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) version of the famous navy dress a coveted step up. When my name was called out at wing defence, the girls eyes all lit up for me & they were all so proud and excited, says Smith. The impressive result; two intercepts, three deflections and 30 Nissan Net Points, while helping to shut down Fever youngster Emma Cosh and, thus, the supply to Fowler. Smith has had 2 tastes now, including a 6 min cameo in the 3Q of last Saturday's defeat of the Magpies, & relished every second. Predictably, after being mid-mouthful when her name was called the first time, one of Victorias rising stars is hungry for more! #apssport #APS #apsnetball #grassroots #schoolsport #unitedcouloursoftheaps #leaders #apsrepsport We enjoy celebrating the success of our students and programs, so if you have a good APS sport story, send it to [email protected] with a photo/video and a few lines for publication on our APS Social Media sites! #shareyourstory
