24.01.2022 How do you know if you need (or your child needs) a tutor? Nothing is more wasteful than failing a year at school, yet every year, students around the world need to repeat a grade due to underperformance. Yet, a small amount of intervention by a tutor can turn the student around and be a big confidence booster more broadly than just in grades. So how do you know if your child needs a tutor? Here are some tell-tale signs:... They work hard but still score poorly on assessments Take a long time to do basic tasks Lack confidence and despair that they will never do well at class or in life Expresses frustration at a subject, teacher or school in general Gets angry when you try to explain something they don’t understand Hates school and wants to leave to go and get an entry level job Frequently bored and causing trouble at school or home Anxious about the upcoming exams and other tests Are confused by the course content Failure to address the root cause of the issue can create a downward spiral for the student. At Top Grade Tutoring, we can help your child gain a good understanding of the content and develop confidence through targeted tutoring program.

23.01.2022 What happens if there is no intervention? A recent observation was made of a student, a member of a family that does not speak English at home. The student attended a very well-funded high quality school. Due to poor grades in English, the student was placed in an English intervention class normally reserved for children with learning difficulties. As the student was in this class, the school had asked if the family wanted him to be recognised as having a disability. This... was intended to provide learning aides and other things that come along with this recognition. Fortunately, his parents had the foresight to engage a native English speaking tutor to provide support. After understanding the needs of the student, the tutor observed that the student scored highly in other subjects, fluently spoke another language at home and he spoke only school yard slang English in the playground (resulting in poor grades in proper English taught at the school). The tutor’s recommendation was that it was not in the best interests of anybody for the student to be recognised as disabled. The tutor worked with the student to set achievable goals and develop a program to develop English grammar, spelling and comprehension skills. The outcome could have been very different if this was not done and the student could have been in a class they did not belong in, with the stress, frustration and loss of confidence that this brings. Remember that the school and education system in general may not understand the child’s specific circumstances when making broad suggestions. At Top Grade Tutoring, we are working for the betterment of the student and will consider all available information when making a recommendation.

19.01.2022 How do you select a good tutor? You have decided to get a tutor, but how do you start to find a good one? Start by asking your school for a few tutors and seeking on the numerous web sites that list tuition services. Interview the tutor and see if you (as parents) connect with him or her. Here is a list of questions you may ask yourself, your child and the tutor:... Is the tutor of the gender that you and the student feel comfortable with? Is the tutor approachable and does your child connect with them? Does the tutor understand the course content? Do they have sufficient qualifications to be credible? Can the tutor communicate with the student and get them to understand the usefulness of an otherwise useless subject? Does the tutor stretch and challenge the student? Does the tutor have good recommendations? If your child is young, does the tutor have a Working With Children Check? Remember to always do a trial with the tutor before committing to a long term booking with them. At Top Grade Tutoring, we interview all of our tutors and only select those that we would hire to tutor our children.

12.01.2022 How do you get the most benefit from individual tutoring? You have booked the tutor and they are traveling to meet with the student. How do you ensure that the student obtains the most benefit from the time that you have booked (and will pay for)? Like anything else you do in life, you will get the most benefit if you do some preparation, this may include:... Identify the topic that the student needs help for, and if it is an exotic topic, notify the tutor to ensure that they are familiar with it. Ensure that the tutoring space is clear from mess, distractions and in an open part of the house. Set clear goals for the session. Ensure that the student has done any textbook problems and has clearly identified those that they can’t do. These should be the focus for the tutoring session. Ensure that the student has gathered any class notes and other materials applicable. Ensure that the student listens to the recommendations of the tutor the tutor is not perfect, but they most likely have good study techniques. Always ensure that the student tries do work themselves. Remember that the tutor is providing a service to you and you need to get the maximum benefit for your money. At Top Grade Tutoring, we want to ensure that we provide a superior service that represents excellent value for money.
12.01.2022 What is the difference between a tutor and a teacher? You will be familiar with the role of a teacher from school, but what about a tutor? To get the maximum benefit from a tutor, it is important to understand the difference between these 2 roles. The role of a teacher is to:... Set the pace of learning to the class room as a whole and the broader expectations of the education department and the school. This pace may neglect some students who have not been able to grasp the concepts before the teacher moves onto the next topic. Provide teaching and instruction to a large number of students following a standardised curriculum. Provide learning material and teaching method that fits most children. The role of a tutor is to: The tutor will satisfy the individual learning needs of the students. Be guided by the students about the topics of focus and the pace of progress. Reinforce what is being taught in the class room. Provide coaching, study skills and techniques to suit the student’s learning style. The nature of tutoring allows connections to be drawn for the content that may not be achieved otherwise. Remember, the communication in a tutoring environment is very different to a class room environment it is much more interactive and suits the needs of your child. At Top Grade Tutoring, we seek first to understand the needs of your child before we seek to be understood.
